2011 WRX HVAC issue...?
On my way home this evening with the outside temperature 35 degrees F, my heat seemed to always be on regardless of where I set the thermostat at. Nothing was on auto. The only time I could get cool air (not even cold) was when I clicked it to that last "cold" notch past the 65 degree mark.
I'll call my dealer tomorrow, but if anyone has any ideas that I can steer them toward, it might end up saving me some time. Thanks. |

Automatic or Manual CC?
Not too familiar with the 08+ models, but I'll try to help as best I can. |

Did you try clicking it past Auto (clockwise) and cranking the temperature to desired setting (below 65)? I thought I had a similar issue since I keep forgetting that I had automatic climate control (my first car with auto climate control).

It has auto modes, so I'm not sure if that qualifies as auto CC or not.
I turned the blower and vent settings past auto and tried adjusting the temp and it still only want from warm air to hot air, except when I was on that notch below 65, then it was just cool air. |

I talked to the dealer today and he said this was "normal" and is just a quirk of the electronic HVAC controls in the new models (I miss my 08 2.5i controls...).
I'm not sure if the controls use a potentiometer, but whatever it is could use some adjustment. |

turn on AC.
Even if you don't have the car in auto, it's still trying to get the air to 65 degrees. Air which was at 30ish degrees, so that requires heat. In my 2011 I've found that if I leave everything in auto, then set the temp to where I want it, the car will pump heat for a bit, then switch to AC and keep things nice and comfy. or turn the temp below 65 |

Put fan to AUTO, Mode to AUTO, and set the Temp to between 65 and 75. Then let the car warm up, once it feels nice, maybe slightly warm, turn it closer to 70. Just leave it there.
The system works very well and will keep the temperature wherever you want it. I only find that once I get on the highway, it gets colder (more cold air flowing in) and I turn it up a little. Also, take your jacket off. It is 35 outside, you have it set to 65. It has to keep blowing till it hits 65 and then keep it there. How do you expect to get cool air at 65? |

I was interpreting the dial in an old-skool manner I suppose where instead of an actual temperature reading, it was more of a ratio of hot to cold.
Is the AC run off electrics or is it belt driven... |

I just have to get the gf on the same mentality. If you want more airflow, change the temp higher or lower, if you want less find the temp it's currently at. |

1) I have a blanket for her if she wants it. 2) She LOVES the heated seats. 3) I have her modulate the vent on her side (you can turn it up/down, left/right, and you can control how open it is, she closes it most of the time). She really wants me to get a Legacy for the dual zone. |

Heated seat is on if she's in the car. Same for number #1 for her. I finally got her to just change the temp until she's happy. If she's not in the car I start @ 70 and drop it to 65 by the time I'm near home. |

The one thing I don't like about the auto settings is when the AC turns on in the dead of winter. It seems a bit unnessesary.

I've been getting acquainted with a 2011 wrx for the last couple weeks. Initially, I thought we had a wacked out cabin sensor because '65' always seemed too hot. I was using the system in manual mode for fans and vents, ac off.
What seems to work in Winter: set fan and vent controls to auto, temp to 65. Initially, the AC light will be off. As the car warms the cabin will become too warm, the AC light will go on, the cabin will stabilize at a warm-ish 65 and I find that after at least ten minutes I can punch the ac button off and all is good. I do wish the thermostat would turn down to about 60. Especially on short trips, I always wear a jacket in the car and '65' is just too warm. The full counter clockwise position on the t-stat is heat off, and happily it really *is* heat off. Manual control subies always seem to be blowing some hot air in somewhere (driver foot well) and that got really annoying. |
