I can't find that Krylon paint anywhere around here May have to resort to the Testor's paint.

Do people recommend spraying clearcoat after paint is dried? Or just spraying krylon red pain is good enough to last for awhile?

That krylon stained glass stuff is hard to find in the stores. usually only available through special order. However i was able to find the trust transparent candy apple red. Going to paint my tails by this weeked . I was talking to the guys at the hobby place where i got it and they sed that its not going to be necessary to shoot my tail lights with a clear.. Can anyone here confirm this?

Nice job! Did you prep the lights by sanding or use any adhesion promoter?

Are there any other colors? I've got a black 08 hatch and wanted something more like a tinted/ smoked color.

Another thing; how hard is it to remove that back chrome piece. I'd like to get that painted black as well. If I can do it myself with good results, even better.

^ if you're only going to be painting the brake light but leaving the reverse white, you could pretty much use anything you want. I know there are "smoke" sprays out there made specifically for that. You COULD probably get away with doing the whole thing, too, if you felt so inclined.

Newfie, i like that your lights look almost matte, very nice look. I don't know if they look that in person but I like it.

BTW Mr.Durden, i like your socket wrench set, high end stuff

How much of the testor's did it take to git 'r done?

I've still got to find this paint and do it already... although I'm considering smoking the outer ring instead of red on my DGM 09.... Either way something has to be done!

one can is all you need, it's more than plenty. I bought 2 just incase I needed it since there only little cans.
I may go back and clear coat it like Super_HKS has done, it looks shiner and better imo.
But for now, it's still looking a hell of alot better than stock!

Either way, it's a easy DIY for anyone to do.

did mine also;
4 coats of Testors Candy Apple Red
2 coats of Krylon UV clear gloss
wet sanded after UV was dry, messed up a little; thin spotted the outer lights in 2 places and could have sanded the clear sections a bit more, regardless, pleased as punch with the results:

Im in the middle of this now using Testors. Are you glad that you wet sanded or do you wish you hadnt bothered? Im getting a little bit of spatter "dots" here and there, could I wet sand before the clear coat goes on? What did you use to wet sand with? Did you shoot another coat of clear after wet sanding? Ivew done 4 light coats already of the Testors red and it doesnt look dark enough yet.

good writeup, thanks. i went with the overlays first, which was a mistake. I will redo them after they start to peel and paint them using this diy.

I painted mine last year with the testors and now they are a faded pink color. Not really wanting to deal with it again. Where can we buy real red tail lights for an 09?

You cant buy real red tailights. Both paints on this thread shown to fade over time. You will have to redo your tailights. Use paint thinner, or a headlight restoration kit to strip the old paint, or a combination of both like I had to. Use Duplicolor Metalcast Red spray paint with a spray clearcoat.
Here is my journal if you want to see pics and more info.

Midevil: but didnt you end up stripping the paint and going with overlays? Thats what Im wanting to do, I have had great luck with the yellow headlight overlays, they are bulletproof so gonna try the tail overlay. What brand did you use and exactly how did you strip the paint from the lights? Did it just come right off? Im worried about paint thinner reacting with the plastic

This is probably a silly question, but when painting the rear lights, do you color the inside of the lenses or the outside?

Also, has anyone reported problems with the paint thinner clouding up the plastic?
