long story short: 24 hours of nürburgring 2014, race class cup 2, engine damage in lap 8. Cup class means no engine modifications, so that´s the rod of every M235i.

Does anyone even know if the rods are different between the N54 vs N55? |

The N54 has a forged crank and forged rods, only the pistons are cast. The N55 is all cast. BMW realized the N54 was over built, and took it out of all the regular #35 cars, except for the 1M and IS models. Certainly not a coincidence the new M3 has a 3.0 TT in it... and upon its release, they stopped using the N54 even in the IS models. IMHO, that's a pretty poor move by BMW, downgrading an engine. I didn't see a downgrade in the price tag after the switch either. At least in the U.S., the N55 wasn't in use until MY2011. Last edited by SoapBox; 07-02-2014 at 07:21 PM. |

Overbuilding (beyond a safety window) is just not smart business for any manufacturer. |

No one is saying it doesn't make sense from a business perspective, of course it does. But... Making the engine cheaper to build doesn't make customers happy unless the savings gets passed on to them, it didn't. And while there were improvements in low-end response and fuerl economy, they were very slight (those were aspects that the automotive world loved about the N54, mind you). They didn't move to the N55 to improve those areas. They did it because it was cheaper, and they could point to those small improvements as justification for moving away from the N54. Driving them back to back, your average person couldn't tell them apart. They left the better engine in the up-model 335is, Z4, and in the 1M. You now had to pay more for the same engine, and pay the same for the lesser engine. You really think that made customers happy, or benefited them? |

I suspect it is true that out of all the models M235i buyers are going to be the ones upset by it. |
