Ok, that clears it up. I'm still worried that this thread may not be confusing enough for noobs. Also BMW.
Great job Len, now you've ruined the joke...again

Here on NASIOC, we heard you like jokes so we put jokes inside our jokes so that you can joke while you joke.

Yeah, that's been going on for a while. To be fair to Audi, even in the old days an S4 wasn't equivalent to the M3. It was really with the B6's introduction of the V8 that it became competitive for a short time. Problem is, the E90's N54 335i (due to being underrated) nearly matched Audi's V8, but the B7 and B8 S4's continued on at about the same power level as the B6. So once again, the 33x was essentially equal to the S4. I think. I don't really follow the Germans that much.

BMW has announced that its M235i sports coupe will be available with xDrive all-wheel drive starting this summer, although the automaker is yet to confirm whether the option will be available to buyers in the U.S. We suspect it will eventually be offered given the popularity of all-wheel-drive models here, especially in the northern states.

Thanks to the added traction of the system, the M235i xDrive, which comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, will accelerate to 62 mph from rest in just 4.6 seconds. That's 0.2 of a second faster than the rear-wheel-drive model.

For more on the M235i, be sure to read our first drive report.

BMW has also confirmed that its intelligent all-wheel-drive system will be offered on the 2-Series Convertible, which is due for a reveal later this year. Further down the track, expect to see the entry-level 228i coupe also have an xDrive option. The car already has an available Track Handling Package too.

S-line, M-line, R-line. They all need to die, because they're all just marketing gimmicks to push the pricing tiers higher. Can't wait for the day the m3 is an 80k sports car lol. It was such an awesome performance bargain from the e46 and prior.
The M3 costs close to $100k here in Canada with a few options and taxes. So it's already jumped the shark.

I'm still bitter about the "tax" on the 3 wagon that only comes with the 8speed auto.

long story short: 24 hours of nürburgring 2014, race class cup 2, engine damage in lap 8. Cup class means no engine modifications, so that´s the rod of every M235i.

Nice. Thanks BMW for taking away the N54 for the cheaper N55. An odd failure even for that engine though.

The N55 has been out for 2009, a couple cars blow their rods in a race and suddenly, it is cheap crap?

Does anyone even know if the rods are different between the N54 vs N55?

I'm not saying it's cheap crap. Again, I called it a rare failure...so no one should read too much into it. I was simply taking a cheap jab at the N55...

The N54 has a forged crank and forged rods, only the pistons are cast. The N55 is all cast.

BMW realized the N54 was over built, and took it out of all the regular #35 cars, except for the 1M and IS models. Certainly not a coincidence the new M3 has a 3.0 TT in it... and upon its release, they stopped using the N54 even in the IS models.

IMHO, that's a pretty poor move by BMW, downgrading an engine. I didn't see a downgrade in the price tag after the switch either.

At least in the U.S., the N55 wasn't in use until MY2011.

It may seem like a poor move for someone that wants to build up a 400+hp engine, but for BMW it was common sense. Cheaper to build, more fuel efficient, better low-end torque. Makes 99% of the customers happier, makes them more profit.

Overbuilding (beyond a safety window) is just not smart business for any manufacturer.

No one is saying it doesn't make sense from a business perspective, of course it does. But...

Making the engine cheaper to build doesn't make customers happy unless the savings gets passed on to them, it didn't.

And while there were improvements in low-end response and fuerl economy, they were very slight (those were aspects that the automotive world loved about the N54, mind you). They didn't move to the N55 to improve those areas. They did it because it was cheaper, and they could point to those small improvements as justification for moving away from the N54. Driving them back to back, your average person couldn't tell them apart.

They left the better engine in the up-model 335is, Z4, and in the 1M.

You now had to pay more for the same engine, and pay the same for the lesser engine. You really think that made customers happy, or benefited them?

I guess we are just talking from different perspectives. When you said it was a poor move by BMW, I was thinking from the company perspective. I don't see much benefit to the average consumer getting an N54. I expect most would rather have fuel economy and low-end torque so they are happy (not that they got something better). Many are barely capable of filling their own gas. But you are right that they did not get any price drop. Such is the luxury car market.

I suspect it is true that out of all the models M235i buyers are going to be the ones upset by it.
