Default Revolutions Performance Experience

Just wanted to add my experience with a local shop to the mix.

I'm a fairly recent (and very ecstatic!) WRX owner. I've wanted one of these things since Gran Turismo 1 came out. I don't care if that's nerdy. Anyway, I got an '05 WRX wagon off of a guy who had the 2.0 replaced with a 2.5 and a new, Exedy organic clutch put in. He had the work done at Revolutions Performance in Colorado Springs.

I've heard good things about the shop, but I'm not sure at present how reputable they really are. I'll update with the outcome, but here are the specifics.

The clutch started slipping soon after I got the car (joy). I took it Revolutions, and they said it was definitely going out. They further said that, since it's a 2.5 with the 2.0 heads and turbo, it makes too much torque down low for the Exedy organic clutch (it's basically a stock clutch, from what I understand). They told me it isn't under warranty since they don't recommend that clutch for this setup, even though it's going bad after only 7k miles.

OK, fine; seems to make sense to me. So I ended up getting a clutch from a guy I know who builds racers (of the NA variety; haven't convinced him to go AWD turbo, yet). When we got the engine out, we found that the collar for the throwout bearing was cracked, and two bolt points for the bell housing were sheared off.

So, there are two things that could have happened. 1. Revolutions monekeyed the engine in or out when they did the swap. 2. It was already broken when Revolutions did the swap, but they did it anyway knowing that the cracked collar would lead to a destroyed clutch and/or flywheel. I think it's probably #1.

I called Revolutions and left them a message a couple of days ago about it (the engine swap is still under warranty; it transfers to a new owner). I've heard nothing back. I'll call again and update as to what they say.

I have no problem with a shop making a mistake. It happens. What separates the good from the bad, in my opinion, is what they do about it. I'm not too hopeful, but it would be nice for Revolutions to surprise me and actually honour their warranty. So far, though, I'm not impressed.

Update:

They won't do anything for repairs or cost absorption for what I'm already paying.

Their claim is that they didn't break anything. I have no way to disprove them, so I'm stuck eating the entire thing (though they did offer to ship the bad clutch back to Exedy for review ... at MY expense; can't say that's too helpful). This is what I expect from a typical mechanic shop, but I was hoping for a little bit of a higher standard from these guys.

They sound like they can make some big HP, which is awesome, but I don't know how confident I would be in them standing behind their work (obviously from my experience; maybe some have had great warranty experience with them; I can only speak for what happened here).

C'est la vie. I'll just replace/repair what's bad on it, and move on with enjoying my ride. Can't wait to get her up and running!

Bummer man. Sounds like they took you. If they did the original swap, ask them if they have the job order around still and see if there are any notes about the damage. If it was me doing it, i would've kept record of that to cover my ass. Seems kind of odd that they don't know anything about that though.

Go to Solid, anyone can make big power with the right parts combo. Look at Brody's car. Not to shabby at this elevation.

I actually already have a good mechanic (he builds NA racers); it's just that darned money issue! Thanks for the tip, though; even if they are out of my area.

I ordered a TSK. Hope that does the trick (couldn't find a transmission case for a good price, and the TSK is supposed to make it stronger than stock in any case). Kevlar clutch is already made (flywheel resurfaced, too) and ready to go in. I'm hoping to get everything done this week or early next; I miss my car! I've been rolling around in this:

And mine doesn't even have those sweet rims (and my Great Dane chewed up some of the seat belts, but that's neither here nor there).

Oh, and my bike has been sitting for a while and is now refusing to start, so I can't even take it out on non-snow days to get my speed fix.

OK, I'm done complaining. I mean, I'm really pretty blessed to be "worrying" about vehicle repairs and such. Some people have real problems, like cancer and bear maulings and stuff. This is nothing compared to those.

I've dealt with revolutions a couple of times and seen some of the tunes they produce. I can't speak much to the quality of their workmanship as there's only one shop and one mechanic that touches my car in Colorado.

Regardless, I highly doubt Revolutions would hack together a clutch knowing it would end up coming back on them. You don't know how the previous owner drove it, that could of caused throw out bearing failure. I'm not defending them, it sucks that you only got 7k out of a new clutch. They definitely are solid tuners and I've seen plenty of fast cars come out of their shop without issue.

I do not have time to read the other posts but I'd like to share my experiences with you all.
Winter of 08 I took my brothers 02 WRX into them for a clutch install. Dropped the car and clutch kit off and left. I get a call back from Revo around four hours later asking where the TOB was (left at home). So I had to run back to the shop to give them the part. Upon inspection the car was up, tranny was down, wheels were loose off the car. Once I got a call the car was done we took it home. Well off the throttle the car made a rancid grinding sound (far worse than any common LW flywheel chatter ive seen). I popped the hood and did some looking around and found they had left a Snap-On ¼ ratchet and extension set in my engine bay! I took the car back to them with in the hour and returned the tools. They said we have no idea but odds are it's one of your catalytic converter broken loose. I said well ok that does not make since considering it sounds from the drive line and it occurred after your clutch work. They said they would take a look but if ANYTHING was found wrong they would be charging me. Considering my bro already forked out the cash and was out of town and my opinion of them was quickly turning to the worst, I was not willing to take the chance of getting hit for another few hundred bucks. On my way back home I noticed some loud clunking from my drver side wheel, so I pulled over. After inspecting yet another noise I found some of my lugs were missing from my drivers side wheel! After calling them out I was told the wheels were never off the car! So I took the car home, picked up a new catless TBE and cobb and tested it out***8230; nothing. That was my FIRST bad experience with the shop.

The second incident was early 2010 when I picked up a "great shape Invidia down pipe". When I got to the shop I found out it was in fact a Megan racing pipe but I was there so I said the hell with it, took her home. Got the AP all set up, did my cars first DP install only to find out the pipe was bent! at a downward angle, about 2" off from linking with my mid pipe. When I called them back I was told "It was used, we had no way of knowing"

The last situation we ran into was it just seems like they did not take the time on the tune. My brothers car had gone back for a tune early 2010 and the car was in and out in around 15 minutes. I'm not sure what all is required to properly tune an engine but 15 minutes seems extremely hasty for a $350 tune. After the install they said the clutch seemed to be going out (Exidy stage II clutch and flywheel and s-cly installed by REVO). This car has had maybe 30k put on it over the duration of 1.5, never tracked, never launched, mostly highway. So I was shocked to hear this as well.

My buddy just ran into a situation with a car he picked up from them just two months ago. He inspected the car, nice floor mats, ran well, strong turbo as he was told. Once he paid the cash for the car there was excessive carpet fade from aggressive track driving that was hidden, once the car was started they said the car runs like crap because of the E85 tune. Last week he pulled the intercooler off and found excessive blow by leaking from the BOV and into the T-body so were suspecting blown turbo.
I will NEVER use them again for ANYTHING, nor will I recommend them to anyone!

Default Fantastic Service received

Seeing how these reviews are quite old I wanted to provide an update, it seems some of the management from old have moved on or replaced. This is my review from 2016/2017.

I live up in Montana and lack good performance/tuning shops for my 2013 Subaru WRX, so I usually have to do everything myself and hope for the best. I come down to Colorado Springs 1-2 times a year and stop by to have them take a look at random things, like boost lines, tunes, upgrade plans etc.

I have talked to Jessica numerous times and can say without a shadow of doubt that this is the finest performance shop I have ever used. They have always showed me great prices, and afforded the time to explain IN DETAIL every question I have asked, while relating it to my current upgrade plans and realistic uses of the car. Jessica is so great in fact that I just called while deployed overseas about potential top-mount Intercooler replacements, and not only did she go into detail on why she recommended the one she did (Verticooler BTW), but went into how it tied into future upgrade plans and the possibility to move away from those pesky triple-bolt flange turbos'.

Please don't pass Revolutions Performance up when looking for shop work. Whether your from out of town or out of state, they are willing to work with you however possible to get what you want done in a timely and cost-effective manner. Every staff member I have had the privilege of interacting with has been professional and very knowledgeable, and going there around Pikes Peak Hill Climb time you would be very impressed with the work they are performing and the cars they are working on.
