Mine is at 7200, and it doesn't do anything but make noise. I have heard rumors that the valvetrain in very similar between the RS and WRX, but the oiling issues is what holds us back from using that redline continually. I know mine never sees it but for a split second, just to avoid the shift to 3rd.
I could be ( and probably am ) wrong about the valvetrain, so don't take my word for it. It is good to know that the crank is the same though |

^^^ Exactly.... My limiter is at 7500. I know I don't make any more power up there, but the car continues to pick up speed and I avoid the need to shift and lose time in doing so. It's not much use for anything but avoiding that shift.
I found valve float at around 78-7900 on the phase II EJ22 (iirc, have same springs as the EJ25). Our DOHC EJ25 will run right up to and beyond 8k with zero valvetrain modifications.....fresh springs/retainers only. We surely don't keep it up there too long and we're usually not up there mid corner. So far, we've had no issues other than the need for a catchcan. Jay |

Do you know if the DOHC EJ25 has the same valvesprings as the SOHC? I doubt they do, but I'm just curious. |

Wow, very impressive car. Have you tried to make it to an autocross in College Station with TAMSCC? We've got a nice big concrete site, so you can get some NATS practice in with the recent switch of venue from asphalt.

I know for a fact that they are not the same. DOHC heads have more options as far as springs go, since EJ257 springs/retainers are a direct fit. I had them in my Brighton when it had the EJ25 in it. I've talked to folks who have had their DOHC heads built with 'busa springs, though I didn't get an answer on required machining or direct fit. Alternate springs aren't legal for DSP, but I believe rallycross rules are different in that regard.

Rallyx rules are very simple (at the moment). SA is like stock classes in autox. PA is like ST classes in autox, and M4 is like A Mod in autox. Pretty simple |

I'm a definite for 2 wheels with a 6" BS and the 5x114.3 bolt pattern. Not sure where to find someone to buy the other 18 wheels though. I could probably make the neon fitment work if that is a dual bolt pattern though. .25" won't kill me and these won't be my primary wheels anyhow.

well I got back this afternoon from OKC after completing the engine. Should be able to put her in next Saturday. I just need a few last minute parts like the thermostate and a new bearing for one of the timing belt sprokets. Other then that, everything else is on the old engine in the car.

Looking good man. My motor is still in pieces. I did just drop it off at the machine shop with the new pistons and crap, but it'll be at lest 2 weeks before I start final assembly.

Well the new motor is in and running. I got about 32 miles on it now. I am going to change the oil tomorrow and get about 300 miles before I change it again. All is good so far. Oil pressure is great and my Autometer gauge reads a bit lower then it acually is as I had a calibrated mechanical gauge from work it check it on the initial start up.

Got your message Pat. Good to hear! I dunno what to tell ya about the pressur gauge. If it's an electric type with a sending unit, you may have some amount of adjustment to dial in the signal.

teh R lives again. Started the new motor yesterday. Wider 10.5" wheels are done, interior is 90% back in, etc. Projects that are left are fab the passenger seat brackets and install, install the belts, tune the AEM EMS, and kick some BMW and Subie @ss.

pffft..... The Link ECU is now in the FSP car and I'd put it up against our DSP car as it sits! Gotta love the ability to tune the timing curve for good gas!!!! We'll have to look at times next event we run together!

Here are the results. The old motor and the new motor. Look at where the torque is at the start and what the rpm is on both.
http://members.cox.net/pdlip/patolddyno.jpg http://members.cox.net/pdlip/patnewdyno.JPG I am going to need to send off the ecu to have them clean it up a bit. Runs a bit too rich on the low end and fix that lean spike in the middle. It's not hurting anything. The clean up should give me a tad more power |

Nice job Pat! I'm still running a stock 'puter. The AEM didn't make any gains over stock, and the adapter harness was giving us fits, so since we didn't get any extra power, I kept it simple and went back to the stock brain.
The passenger seat brackets got done, and then I decided I really liked how it came out, so I decided to rework the drivers side brackets. End result, the drivers seat is nearly 10lbs lighter! When I had it on the dyno I noticed it was still puffing a lot of oil out the exhaust, so I sprung for a pimpy catch can setup. Hopefully my guess is right and I'm sucking oil out through the PVC system. It was overfilled by half a quart so that might have been contributing to the issue as well. Plugs looked good though, and the dang thing rips. How much of that is me driving a 90hp 320k mile civic all winter and not being used to a car with power and how much is actually due to it making good power is hard to say. I was on a different dyno then last summer, so I can't compare the numbers between dyno's either, but I'm told it's making about what a car with that engine and set of modifications would make. |

Well...
I am finally officially "checking in" for DSP. Steven Rankins (pleiades) and I are campaigning my 1999 2.5 RS this year for Boxer4Racing and SubaruPartsPro.com - for those of you that may have been watching for a few years, this is a continuation of our 2005 DSP/STX effort in the 2.5 RS he had before he got his STI. We had been planning the effort on paper for a while, and finally started throwing parts at the car in February. In March we went to the Dixie National Tour and finished 1-2 and we have continued to work on the car the past few weeks, and though it has a long way to go, it's getting better. Rankins on his way to first place at the 2009 Dixie National Tour I nearly captured the car's first FTD this weekend at a South Carolina Region event at the Michelin Laurens Proving Grounds, but got knocked off the top spot by an SSM 300ZX. Here is the on-board video from the event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRHc4e7ug1Y Next up - the SEDIV Event next weekend in Virginia. Jon K |

Hey Jon! You guys planning on sticking with the tall tires, or will you be joining the 275/35/15 crowd?
BTW, oil out the exhaust = bad, mkay? Damn oil issue persists. At least I don't have PJ's oil problem. His is the kind where the oil won't stay in the block because the block got renovated with some windows, a door, and a skylight. I think he's trying a bit hard with the weight reduction.... |
