Have any of you been running RE71Rs and done some track days as well?

I'm debating on new tires for this year, but plan to run 4-6 track days in addition to a full season of autox with two different organizations. I'm curious to hear about people's experience with 71Rs and their wear rates when run for both autox and HPDEs. They will be on a separate set of wheels, so not daily driven, but I am aware of the incredibly high wear rates on 71Rs. But if I can squeeze one season out of them, without having to budget for a 2nd set of tires, I'll be happy.

I wrote a letter back when this was a proposal for STU arguing the same reasoning. However, I know a lot of the STU guys are having trouble finding a solid wheel/tire package. If I recall correctly, they only make 265s for a 18 inch wheel. Going to get expensive fast.

I guess I don't understand the "incredibly high wear rates on the 71Rs." We're seeing around 200 runs per set here in my region across several platforms. Great part is they keep their speed the whole way through the tread. I ended the season with 99 runs on mine and they're just a bit more than half worn. What do you have your alignment set as? Does your region have a really harsh surface?

My area wouldn't be a good basis off track days. The surface here is TERRIBLE. I've seen people cord brand new tires in one track day, even running at 80-90%. I would say it really depends on the surface and if you're overly aggressive on the tires. Regardless, it sounds like you'll need at least 2 sets for your season. In my opinion, RE-71Rs are the way to go.

I just ran a practice day over the weekend potentially entering stx. I'm still on stock tires on a 15 wrx with aftermarket front and rear sways, rce yellows, stock shocks, group n tranny mount and an alignment. I'm still a complete noob when it comes to autox so I'm working on upgrading the driver mod. I haven't done any power mods that stx allows but considering all that I was consistently 10 seconds behind the top drivers. Is there a point I can be competitive when I do get more seat time and re71r, and maybe intake, full exhaust and shocks? I want to build my car for my personal taste for daily/canyon and still autox also somewhat competitively. I know ds is the way to go if I really want a chance but I enjoy daily driving my car with mods more than winning anything at the moment.

Maybe it's me but I'm not sure what the question is... are you asking "at what point is it the car holding me back vs. me holding me back?" I'd say to hold off on mods as a solution until you can get within ~4 seconds of the front of the field. At that point, probably half the time difference will be prep (tires, shocks, springs, power) and the other half still driver. For now, spend your mod $$ on some Evo Schools and TnT's.

Can I claim "slow day at work"?

PS
I'm learning to troll people in person though... Told some kid the other day that it "only makes 650 at the wheels".

2009-2014 WRX are still classed in STU for 2016.

Proposal is submitted for member comment to move the 2009-2014 WRX into STX per the Feb 2016 Fastrack.

^yikes (says the 2008 WRX owner), I didn't see that before.
https://www.scca.com/pages/fastrack-news

If that were to be accepted, would it be for 2016 or 2017? I don't know the cutoff for rules changes/etc.

I wonder if moving the 2002-2008 WRX to STS would fly? PAX is close enough to justify it, I'd think.

Ok so if the proposal were to go through it would be effective for 2017.

that would put all WRX's (non STI) into STX.

I'm going from DS to STX. I have an airbox, tune and RE-71s. How hopelessly outclassed am I starting off?

I did very well in street last season. I placed every single time, getting PAX times in the top 25% the whole season, breaking top 6% twice.

Suspension and exhaust are in the planning.

Depends on the region and who you're running against. If you were down here, you'd get d1ck stomped... STX is a stacked field with the current National Champ and some other really fast guys. Other areas of the country may be easier or harder but I'd expect to be bringing a spoon to a gun fight... Still, have fun!

I dont know.

He's from NESIC, if he's running with NER in the top 6% PAX, with unforgiving STX PAX, I think that means he's the one doing the d1ck stomping.

Well how much of a step up is STX from DS in terms of raw time? Most courses are 30s to 1 minute in duration.

Take any time (like 60 sec), multiply it by DS PAX, then divide that by STX PAX. That will give you what raw time you need to beat a DS car.

Oh that's really simple. Not sure why I didn't do that. Thanks.

For those of you wondering:

Code:
Raw	DS	STX	change
30.00	24.33	25.08	0.75
35.00	28.39	29.26	0.87
40.00	32.44	33.44	1.00
45.00	36.50	37.62	1.12
50.00	40.55	41.80	1.25
55.00	44.61	45.98	1.37
60.00	48.66	50.16	1.50
Seems entirely within reason. For whatever reason I thought PAX would make it a few seconds difference.

On that topic:
I'm wondering what the pros/cons of the 2009-10 narrow body vs 2011-14 wide body WRX would be in potential-future-STX.

Extra track width equals more cornering grip, but takes a little more distance to get around cones, say in a slalom. Both cars seem to weigh the same.
Would there be a quantifiable difference between the cars in STX where suspension is equalized and both can fit 17x8 245/40-17's?

Yes, there is a quantifiable difference. No, it won't matter. Seriously, no one is good enough that it's going to make a difference.

Track width is effectively modifiable on both cars anyway because offset changes to the wheels are legal.

Assuming I can fit the same size wheels and tires, I'll take the narrower car. I agree that the track width impact on handling is well within the noise but think a couple inches less chassis width* would be m0Ar betterer.

*what are the actual width differences between the 2?
