12000 miles in 4 months!!
and to think I was worried about having 2000 miles already in 1 month. Oh well, cars are meant to drive. I find myself making many unneccesary trips to the store just to get in the car. (and taking the long, twisty scenic routes) Oh yeah. that's when you know you bought the right car. See ya. |

Janq,
Did you PM Myles and tell him where to head to? His input on track dynamics of the STi are far too important for us to miss. Bish |

Guys... it's really not the end of the STi world on NASIOC.
We have tried to make some forums that will help fill any void that would be created by this forum being archived. I don't see what all the panic and "sky is falling" talk is for. -Nick |

Hey Nick - I can understand where you're coming from with the "sky is falling" comparison. I don't know that folks are necessarily feeling that NASIOC as a whole is coming to an end as much as feeling that the CONVENIENCE of an STi specific forum here is drawing to a close. I have grown rather used to the consolidation of STi specific information available on NASIOC, and my interpretation is that's more what folks are lamenting. Having said that I am ALWAYS looking forward to posts by many of the members here that were deragatorily referred to as "Noobs" or whatever, on whichever forum they end up posting on.

What is the real joke is that one of the moderators on this forum is on a power trip. I started a topic just to express my feelings on the issue, similar to this topic, and I get hit with a warning. Do not mistake this for me concluding that all moderators need to be realigned in their thinking, but just some of them.
It was great to have what he had and I look forward to see many of you on this or other forums. nivek |

I agree with Nivek. Don't take me wrong here as I appreciate having had a site to refer to the past 6 months I've been here shairng info, meeting & making new friends, battlng heatedly with foes and generally having a good time. So much so that I even proudly affixed 'Mid-Atlantic' stickers to my STi and Legacy (see mid-atlantic thread) and had planned to do the same with the upcoming NASIOC sticker. Further I appreciate the work that the mods have done, although prior to the past 4 weeks I can't say I'd seen much of them other than making posts and once in a blue moon jumping in to act as traffic cop if things got too far out of hand (i.e. recollect the infamous thread where I said that the Mitsu/Dodge 'Colt' was a "POS", which BTW it was). The problem in my humble opinion as it seems to me by observation is that folks went from almost never hearing from mods and generally rolling around in your digital playpen with little if any restraints to a very sudden, in some cases overbearing, and at times Orwellian constraints on the posted opinions of your members. I'm reading and hearing (off-line) mostly that folks are not so much turned off by the reduction/elimination of the STi thread as a whole, though there are some displeased with that decision, but they on the whole do not appreciate being muscled by several (not all) mods who have suddenly been awakened from their coffee & donut induced stupor into full 'Barney Fife' mode waving their gun, loaded or not, at anyone and everyone that happens to disagree with the move. It also didn't help from a point of public relations that some folks who happened to just find out about this site, the STi or even Subaru for that matter in say the last few weeks, months, year and not have low member numbers are suddenly dismissed as "Newbies" with a 'social status' of all but second level net citizen. That I have to say is insulting and is not the best way to retain much less gain members/friends. Okay, I understand that decisions were made by the powers that be and that the site is ultimately a privately owned 'club' of sorts and as there is no member fee to access the site folks have no real say in things. I can live with that and understand it. But when someone is told they are a newbie and their opinion or input is written off because they haven't been at this particular site as a "contributor" since the days of the RS or whenever is unfair, demeaning and just plain mean. We all can't be long time Subaru & NASIOC members. We all can't be Paul Hansen with direct access to exotic JDM offerings. Nor can we all be a '944 TG' with an IMSA license and track expertise, 'Essogas' with access to CA market equipment & rugs, or for that matter a 'Janq' with long thought out posts & timely quotes. In my own case I currently own two Subies and have owned five in the last 13 years out of the 16 years I've held a license to drive. Also I had the good fortune to both work in the industry for a formerly large MD dealer as well as work directly for SoA (amongst others) and had recieved awards specifically for my Subaru product knowledge at that time. Yes, the WRX was not in existence at all back then ('80's & '90's) but bottom line I am in no sense of the word a Subie newbie. Its just by luck that I happened one night to come across NASIOC months ago while doing a bit of research on the SVX for a friend and running a search via Google. Because I happen to be relatively new here shouldn't relegate me, and others, to the seemingly insignificant newbie status. No disrespect to those that have been here a year or more but give some us a new guys a little bit of credit as we just might have something valid & valuable to contribute to the general populace. I did not start out with the intention of this post being long winded and I apologize for it being so as I hope I've not used up too much of your time. But I can tell you that I have and do throughly enjoy this site as my frequency of posts & participation I believe proves that without much doubt. I have tried to provide valuable information while at the same time being guilty at times of being a littel less than serious in my tone and manner. But hey, I'm serious at work all day and this site is one of my rare opportunities to let my hair down and just have a good time. I'll continue to visit the site for as long as I'm welcomed and/or my points situation holds out. But I can tell you that others have in fact moved on to alternate locales purely out of annoyance, disgust, and to some degree fear of retribution by suddenly & seemingly aggresive and in a few specific cases mean spirited (possibly overworked?) mods/overseers. For the record I wish NASIOC no ill will and will continue to encourage my Subie friends (anyone who owns any model Subaru is a friend of mine) to check this site for all the latest information. But alas my short list of preferred Subie sites to visit has grown from two to four or five in the last week, and I suspect you'll probably hear less from me than in the past. I suspect the same will or has occured for others here. As I never like to point out problems without providing a potential solution, I would suggest that for the immediate term NASIOC 'staffers' mend fences by backing off the bellyachers about the STi thread being closed and let things gel for a week or so. Just let things die down on their own as tempers cool and noses unflare. I'd also encourage you and/or the powers that be to direct the mod's to be a little more 'moderate' in their actions, interactions and responses to members. I mean you guys didn't really expect for thse folks to just take the thread going away without some negative commentary, right? Hell, there are folks here mad that the STi doesn't come in red (!) or with a sunroof (?) so you gotta expect folks to have something to say about their favorite thread being disbanded. One final item. I'm sure my words will result in flames from some folks who disagree and possibly an assesment of additional 'Disrespect Points' from a mod or two. Know that I am not and do not intend to cause NASIOC or mods problems as I'm just being straight and writing my own opinion without the intention of being droll or disingenuous. Make of it what you will but notice this is the rare post where I am not being glib in any way. I hope you take my words for what they are, opinion, and do not feel I'm trying to "cause trouble". I wish you, the mods, and my fellow NASIOC members all the best. Regards, - Henry "...It's whats inside." - Subaru |

I appreciate the support.
The STI is my first Subaru. I happened upon NASIOC just after purchasing this car. I found the STI forum not only informative, but fun and interesting as others like myself began purchasing their own STIs and sharing their experiences, both likes and dislikes. Despite the occassional post that could be construed as a waste of space, I found most of the posts funny, informative, or entertaining. In fact, I became so obsessed as a "newbie" that I checked the forums three, four, and maybe even five times a day in spite of the mild scoldings that I would receive from my serious girlfriend who has felt displaced since the STI entered my life. In a lot of ways, I have really come to love my Subaru and in visiting NASIOC in particular, as opposed to many of the other hosted Subaru forums, I felt part of a family. This is something that I felt NASIOC strived to offer Subaru and soon to be Subaru owners alike. It seemed like a place for a community of car enthusiasts and the STI forum specifically enabled us to develop the bonds that we have. I appreciate all that it has done for me, but I realize that those in charge did not intend for this too last forever. While I know that it had to come to an end and be merged with the rest of the forums, my only intent in writing any response to closure of the STI forum was to communicate a message. That message was that they may want to reconsider because several "newbies" like myself really made an effort to visit NASIOC because it was here that the STI community really had a place to come and feel connected. Even though many of us frequently visited other Subaru forums looking for alternative sources of information, it was NASIOC that became the primary source of information for my STI needs and interests. In essence, the closure of the STI forum at NASIOC destroyed the sole reason that I visit NASIOC over other Subaru forums. While my enthusiasm has been somewhat dampened, I will still visit and occassionally post on NASIOC because it will remain a valuable resource. However, when I was slapped with a point fine without explanation by WagonMonster, the "CrankyModerator" is his/her title, I was a bit shocked. Apparently, WagonMonster found my thread in bad taste because I had not read all the other threads in the forum that day in which it was declared that all newbies who post anything that a moderator deems "whiny" will receive such a fine. I do not appreciate this type of treatment, but I know that such radical behavior is not a reflection of NASIOC in general so despite this I too will continue to tell people about the site and what it offers Subaru enthusiasts. I hope for nothing more than the continued growth of the site and the already existing relationship it has with its users, "newbies" "gurus" and "experts" included. But, if NASIOC asked for my advice, it would simply be to remember that this site was built by newbies and that it only continues to grow through new newby registration. Afterall, most "gurus" and "experts" have been around and already joined long ago. So treating us with some respect and valuing our input or even respecting our right to post how we feel, afterall you want our feedback right?, will be the only way to maintain the reputation that this site deserves. When I got my stereo put in, I told them what size speakers I wanted. They looked in "the book" and say, "Hey, 6 1/2's will fit in the back, we'll go with those!".
Me: "No they won't." Them: "Yes, they will, the book says so." Me: "Keep me posted." One hour later, "Um yeah, we'll have to go with smaller ones in the back." Me: See, I did learn something! |
