Hello all, I am a new member here (with limitations on where and how I can post) so this is my very first post here. I hope to become an active part of the Subaru community.
This tread seems to be the appropriate place to post regarding the main reason I joined here.
I am a new owner of a pre owned 2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0 FB20.
This is my first subaru and I am in love with it so far.
It appears to be very well maintained by the previous owner and only came with 47,000 miles on it.
Well when I brought it home last month, the first thing I did was change the oil. Well now at 48,500 miles as I was driving one day I looked down and saw my low oil light on my dash was on.
I now have been doing some reading and have found my way to here in hopes of some answers.
With my engine buning 1 quart every 1,500 miles, I find myself in a situation with this car I was not prepared for. I had no idea these cars did this.
I know Subaru is in a legal battle right now over this at the moment.
I suppose that my main question is what can be done about this? Or is this oil burning just something I'm going to have to deal with for this car?

Your first course of action should be to contact Subaru of America. Then they will have you perform an oil consumption test at a local dealership. If your car is consuming excess oil, then they will likely replace your motor.

Can someone please give me a straight answer on the criteria of the oil consumption test: How many quarts of oil does it have to burn to qualify for a short block?

Here is the situation. I recently bought a 2012 base model impreza. In the 4300 miles since I bought it, it has consumed about 3.5 quarts. I say 3.5 quarts because it was overfilled at the dealer and I dont know if the measurement is accurate above the full mark.

I called SOA today and they informed that the car has to consume 1qt of oil every 1200 miles to qualify. They also apparently did not know about the lawsuit settlement which extends the powertrain warranty.

Since the last time the oil mark was below minimum, I have driven 850 miles. In that time I have burned 1/2 a quart.

Would this car qualify for a new short block?

BY the way, just for fun 5*1200 = 6000. So the car is ok to consume 5 quarts of oil in 1 oil change interval, what please, is the point of and oil change then?

Spec is 10.7 oz per 1200 miles, which works out to 1 quart per 3600 miles. While TSB 02-157-14R refers to an "Oil Consumption Test", it does not list this limit. You can find this TSB on the web; it covers FB20 short block replacement for oil consumption issues. However, when I called SOA, and asked directly if the limit was 10.7 oz per 1200 miles, I got a pause, and then a "Yes".
Take your car in to a good dealership, and ask for an oil consumption test. Be polite but persistent, and I'm sure you will get a new short block...

Thanks rymar. I have 300 miles to go in my own consumption test and i will take it in.

Two questions:

First, i replaced the pcv valve. This was clogged! it was a week week repair where in week 1 i cleaned the old pcv and the. Replaced in week 2 woth a new part. Whats fascinating is that the cleaned pcv was clogged in 1 week and oil was visible at the intake. Is this common?

Second, SOA sent me an email that said 1/3 qt per 1200 miles under normal operatiom but 1 qt per 1200 miles under severe conditions. The catch is that severe conditions is more or less all driving... What do you think?

I didn't get that argument from the dealership... the results of my oil consumption test were considered to be under "normal" conditions. I did tell them at the beginning that I did not drive under "severe" conditions, which couldn't hurt. I don't think it will be an issue.

Overall, and despite some horror stories with specific dealerships, it does seem that Subaru is standing behind these engines.

My son just had the motor replaced in his 2012 (got it back today). He brought the car in for an oil consumption test and the oil light came on after ~1000 miles. Dealer put a new short block in, no questions asked.

So I went in for my oil consumption test. And the rules were to bring it back if the oil light came on, or once I hit 1200 miles.
Well at about 1010 miles, the oil light came on, but I was unable to go to the dealer at the time. Once I made it to 1100 miles, the oil light went off and now won't come back on.
I wonder if I go back at 1200 miles with the oil light off if I'll still get a new short block or if they'll just pass me off as normal consumption?
Has anyone went back with the oil light off and still received a new short block?

My oil level light NEVER came on, and I still received a new short block. The oil consumption test is based on measuring the oil level with the dipstick.

What is the cause behind my oil light coming on for ~90 miles and then turning off?

The oil level detector is filtered by the ECU to produce the warning light. When the oil level gets low, the detector is actually going on and off frequently; you just don't see the warning light each time because of the ECU filtering. So, it is probably right at the trigger point for the warning light, and then due to changes in temperature, cornering, engine RPM, etc., the warning light went off again.

You should check your dipstick oil level.

There is also a firmware update for 2012 Imprezas which helps prevent false triggering of the light.

It is saying add oil you idiot before I Blow up in Morse Code. You just have to make it a habit to check your every 1500 miles to be safe. If not you will have to be reminded by the oil light. Been in your shoes and that is why I am installing a new engine. Too much oil consumption. Good luck

Well I did go back in for my second part of my oil consumption test today. They drained and measured the oil and I had burned 25oz. So I qualify for a new short block.

I'll post more once I get the new engine. They said they had to order the part. It will take a couple of weeks they said.

I can't vote yet, but mine is using oil at a pretty good clip. Over a quart per 7000 miles.

I just finished my SOA oil consumption test and was over 1qt low for the 1200 mile test. I'm taking my car in on Friday for a replacement short block...

I really hope this is it! At 5k miles the 5-speed trans needed to be replaced and now the engine at 35k miles.

This is my first subaru and I love that the car goes everywhere I want to go (some places better than my Acadia) but I am super disappointed in the powertrain!

Do I need to request the power-train warranty extension or does everyone get that as part of the settlement?

I'm in the middle of a 2nd oil consumption test. The first test came back and they said "no oil consumption". After that, I had to add 1.75 quarts before the next OCI AND the oil light came on twice...

So, I went back. The service advisor stated that we can start a 3rd test immediately after the 2nd if it fails to show consumption.

I REALLY wanted to love this car and keep it for a long time but if these 2nd or 3rd tests don't show consumption and I don't get a new engine I'm selling the car. Shame on me for buying a 1st year model run but I may even walk away from Subaru even though WRX and FXT are appealing.

I'm in the same boat. I'm currently shopping for a used Subi with the head gasket/timing belt/water pump maintenance already completed.

Great cars - but just like any car, they have their flaws. I'll pass on this generation and await the next.

I noticed my car has burned about .5 quarts in 2500 miles. Not as bad as some. I at least want to wait till the oil consumption lawsuit is finalized to see if our power train warranties will be extended.

Lawsuit has been finalized; I received paperwork/docs from Subaru a couple of days ago. Affected cars now have an eight years / 100,000 miles powertrain warranty. Cars that are already past 100,000 miles get an extra year of powertrain warranty.

Kinda funny, the only thing I have received from Subaru lately is literature asking for me to pay to extend my warranty.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else received notification of finalization of the class action suit and extended warranties?
