Here is more ammo on the head gasket war.
I have an 05 STI and have 55K miles on it. It started overheating and of course found out it was a blown head gasket. I got everything done under warranty. They even replaced my timing belt because they said it had a nick in it. My turbo was cracked and they replaced that also. Great customer service. Disappointed in the whole head gasket leaking though. I thought these motors were bullet proof.

I just did the HG on my 01 that has 160K. I did it in car. Whe I have time, I may do a write-up.
Now the oil consumption totally stopped. The mileage is up 1-2 MPG also.

I just rolled over 100k on my 03 2.5rs, im getting the burnning coolant smell, but i cant find a leak or where it is coming from. Its not the heater core, and there is no smoke from the exhaust. I have replaced the water pump/ thermostat. It isnt over heating, but i just recently had a 5hr trip and anytime i would get over 70mph it would start to overheat...is this the head gasket curse i keep hearing about?

I have 15,000 and I have apsolutely no oil leak or consumption then again I allow my engine to get to the right temp before I drive it..so its never cold..aslo this allows metal to expand and seal....its an 06 and still driving strong and I drive it hard occasionally like 5,000-5,500 shifts....I plan on upgrading gaskets when high flow heads come just to be safe...

Default Sorry to dredge up an old thread

I'm a noob and can't start a new thread yet and need some expert advice.

I have a blown head gasket on my 99 Legacy Outback 2.5 with 126k and I am going to have the dealer do the repairs for $1500.00 Am I throwing my money away on repairing this? Will this problem resurface in the next 20-40K miles? The rest of the car is pretty solid and would like to keep it if I can. I'd love to get another 3/4 years out of the car.

thanks

Kevin

did you jack up one side of the engine to make it easier?

how long did it take?

2002 Outback Sport, 110,000 miles. External oil leak started around 90,000 miles. Lately it has been consuming a lot of oil, but the external leak has slowed down a bit. Just noticed some of the dreaded mayonnaise accumulating under the rad. cap this morning.

If they do it right, it should last another 100k or so. Maybe more. If they do it wrong, it won't last 5k.

Default My Story...

I just had an oil change done on the wife's 2002 Forester with 115K miles. got a laundry list of items back.

1. External oil leak at HG. Didn't mention which side
2. Need new spark plug wires
3. Side marker lights out
4. Brakes down to 1/32 up front.

I'm reasonably confident in my mechanical ability to do the middle two, the others not so much.

My question on the HG is if it is advisable to add stop leak to help prevent/put off the internal gasket failure or is it wasted money? I spoke to my mechanic's engine guy and he mentioned doing the timing belt/water pump due to oil leaking onto the belt and ruining the belt. That was just done last year and I don't relish paying for it again. I was quoted ~1380 from the dealer for the HG. Doesn't sound like a bad estimate from what I've read on this thread. I spoke to another friend who mentioned doing a compression test in each cylinder. If that is done and the compression is where it should be, do i go further and get the HG done or ignore it? At this point I'm on info overload and could use a a little guidance. Thanks for the feedback.

You're right,t he middle 2 are easy. #4 is also very easy, and brake pads are cheap. If you can rotate your tires, you can change brake pads.

As for the leak, since it's external I wouldn't worry about it if you're not noticing coolant or oil on the ground. Just keep an eye on the level of each for a while to get an idea of how much is leaking.

My mother bought a 98 legacy brighton brand new. After 4 years the only problem this car ever had was a failed thermostat.Luckily she paid attention to her guages and got the back home without any damage. She sold the car to my cousin in 2004 with 80k miles on the clock.Since then he has put over 60k miles on it with no trouble, with the exception of leaking valve cover gaskets.Being that this car has been virtualy trouble free for so long and has never nad the coolant conditioner in it,I don't think it's so much a material problem but an issue with the person torquing the head bolts properly.
I have been driving my 02 OBS with 180k+ miles for 1 year now with no leaks anywhere.Cherry capital subaru has records of the work done to this car through 08 and there are no records of the head gasket being replaced. This along with posts about their 07 with only 25k miles needing head gaskets further leads me to believe that human error is the culprit. If it really was a design flaw,I would think that both of these cars should have needed the HG done at least 1 or 2 times by now.
So my observations say that it would either be human error or we have been very VERY lucky.Would you not agree?

You've been lucky. Lucky that your mom's & cousin's car has a 2.2 which will never die, and lucky that your 2.5 has apparently not failed...yet.

Thanks for the advice...I bought Bars stop leak block/radiator formula. I figure it can't hurt, may prevent a future failure and give a little peace of mind too.

Is it different? I can't imagine a car company inventing their own stop-leak from scratch when there are numerous companies that have been refining their versions for years. More likely Subaru buys it relabeled at a significant discount from someone.

They probably didn't invent it, but the chemistry involved can definitely vary from one manufacturer's engine to another. And the Subaru stuff is so cheap, there's really no justifiable reason to not use it.

Hmm, except that the nearest dealer is 45 minutes away. A friend of mine is a subie enthusiast, and lives in another town, might be able to pick some up. I probably should flush the coolant while I'm at it, Peak Global? I've sworn by Zerex G05 for aluminum engines for many years, but I'm open to try something else if it's worked for others.

Normally I'd say OEM coolant, but with the dealer that far away, I'd just keep using what you've been using. And you can get the HG conditioner really cheap online.

Just bought this car, so I don't know whats in it. I don't like mixing coolants, even after multiple flushes, but I don't know what it is, so I need to pick one. I'll check online for that additive, thanks.

defiantly go with the OEM conditioner. I have read about other brand stop leaks that have caused clogs and such. The OEM conditioner was i think $2.95 or something like that.
