Default In-Car Install of iPad Mini?

So I saw this post on autoblog (http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/07/c...ple-ipad-mini/), and just after the few other examples I've heard of, it got me thinking. Would it be possible to install an iPad mini in my wrx? I have little to no know-how of how to even start such a project, but does anyone have any idea where to begin?

This could be super epic and awesome, or super miserable and destroy my interior. I need to measure first, but I'm not near my car at the moment. I have a '12 wrx. Would the iPad mini fit in place of the radio console? I know it probably won't be a perfect fit - might need to saw out a bit, but that general area above the vents looks like it could actually fit the mini, what do you think? The ipad is 7.78in x 5.3in x .28in. Not that depth would really be an issue...

I'm cautiously excited....

The normal ipads in cars just look absolutely retarded and I don't know why anyone would do that. The ipad mini on the other hand is small enough it should look nice and flow well. I believe (someone should confirm this) the standard size for a double din opening is 4x7in. So minor cutting would be needed to make it fit. Its so close you may even be able to get away with doing something like cutting an 8x5.75 hole and then using ABS plastic to make a face that the ipad mini would sit flush in.

I got the call to put one in the week before they came out, just before the hurricane, its tempting but I've got a motor swap to do or I would do it. Wouldn't be hard and would be very cool. I was trying to convince him to do two, one in each visor. That way your passenger can play too.

And I agree about the mini. the regular ipad is way too big. hence why I'm pretty excited about the mini! it shouldn't look as ridiculous..

@tuzzio, who is slicvic?

thanks!

The Google Nexus 7 fits like a glove in the double DIN opening. A mini Ipad would need some minor trimming, bondo, sanding and painting. But doable.

Car audio is all about creativity and not so much does it fit.

Perhaps search the car audio forum as that would have been the better place to start. I'd recommend you find the nexus thread to see what that guy did to put a tablet in the dash and look pretty OEM to boot.

Soundman in CA will build your dash and send it to you. Expensive but these guys do great work. You can check out their youtube videos, the one showing the ipad mini install was on a volkswagen cc and they utilized magnets fiberglassed into the "pan" they create. Here are the links to their site as well as the youtube video.

Just wanted to point out BMW already has patent on that name. BMW computer software = iDrive

And now something relevant-> I think that the mini in a car makes a whole lot more sense than a full size iPad. Thats just excessive

someone needs to make a double din plate that holds a 7" tablet... Or even better a metal frame that would mimic the size of a double din cd player. there has to be some sort of standards to that stuff as cd players always seem to fit...

Forgive my tech noobiness. But what's a double din plate? I'm trying to outsource a manufacturer in china who specializes in apple products and if I can give good specifications to what we're looking for, he'll give me a quote. If I can figure a way around shipping, it shouldn't be that expensive bc I've worked with him in the past.

Here is my setup (originally )

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2300312

And here is the setup I made last night for my Nexus7 over the top of my headunit. *I still have some minor cleanup to do on the bracket edges.

Basically I made a two 3 sided brackets , bottom (resting for tablet), side, front and a top "L" bracket to keep it from falling backwards when accelerating. Then screwed them into the face-plate with very little screws from the back.

The brackets basically create a 1 centimeter cube for the tablet to sit on/in, I used 3mm thick carbon-fiber sheet as material. I also mounted it so that there is a 8mm gap from the bottom so the factory radio buttons are still accessible even with the tablet in in use.

Why make it this way, I wanted to keep the Pioneer unit and backup camera for when I do not want to use the tablet.

I case anyone wonders I use MiFi for my Nexus and or navigation when the tablet is in use. I connect the tablet to the headunit via bluetooth. I even use the steering wheel controls for voice commands and skipping on the tablet and yes my phone is also paired at the same time and I can use the wheel answer and hangup wile the tablet is in. In short when setting up the Bluetooth you have to specify what funtions the tablet has and what functions the phone has (phone = phone only, no streaming audio).

I am using "Car Home" as the Home screen wile in the car

Here are pictures:

This is the wrong place to ask that. There are plenty of long threads addressing that question.

Thank you

It set me back about 4 hours and glued hands, the Screws were less then $5. The 3mm carbon fiber sheet was $45, but I had that already from another project so that was kinda free.
