Safe travels and wrenching!
That's great about the dream, I had a reoccuring nightmare involving a sicko with a wood chipper and my sons. Don't have any idea where it came from but it was once a week for a while. Lasted for about 6 months, I would wake up, go back to sleep and it would start all over. Nothing is worse than, for whatever reason, not to be able to protect your children.
I'll send you a PM in a few.

1. I plan to buy a used car mid-2013 (timing based on when kids college fund payments end). Something fast, daily drive capable, under $50k. Need rear seats for kiddos, but doesn't have to be a sedan. Initial candidates... Audi S4/S5, BMW M3, Caddy CTS-V... haven't actually driven anything yet. Open for suggestions...

2. Need to decide if I am going to keep or sell the STi. Logic tells me to sell it. I would have to store the car elsewhere if I kept it. Doesn't make sense to keep it if it only gets driven a few times a month.

Emotionally, I want to keep it. I read about seller's remorse when people get rid of their modded STi, only to wish they could buy it back. Financially, I can keep it. Car is paid for, 100% functional... Maybe keep it for 6 months and then re-address the situation? Don't know...
You can't leave the car without driving, and I mean really driving the S**t out of it, the replacement. AND it has to THRILL you, more than the STi. Then it also has to be the DD that you can just drive, I don't think you would have any problems with the choices you have made. As far as comfort, Etc. My choice would be the Audi/Caddy/BMW. Make it an M5 and the list might change, but with the budget mentioned it would be a stretch to get a good one.

Esh... did you watch Fargo before having those dreams?

Yes, previous generation M5 manual could make the list. Those are actually the same price as M3s, believe it or not. Nice low mileage '07 or '08 for well under $50k.

Agree regarding the test drive... need to do more than just armchair quarterbacking...

^ Note that I have driven my father's '06 M5 with the SMG. Not a happy experience.

My anecdotal story:

Sitting on 3rd St, waiting to make a left turn into a Thai food restaurant. Had a small opening, and thought... "400 hp should be good enough to gun the gap!" Yes, I was driving it in normal mode, not having pressed the 500hp button.

So I floored it. It rolled from a stop out into traffic. Kept my foot on the floor. It kept rolling. I stained my shorts as I watched the oncoming car get closer and closer.

As the oncoming cars are now emergency braking to avoid broadsiding me, the M5 finally went fast. Very fast. Straight into the Thai restaurant parking lot. Shorts stained second time, as I executed an emergency stop before having a parking lot collision.

Bottom line... I am a control freak that does not trust slushboxes (or SMG or whatever takes the third pedal away from me). My experience in the M5 deepened my distrust.

Stick shift, or die.

My sentiments exactly, although if you spend enough money you can get cars that perform well with the auto. $150K kind of money.

Yeah, my gut says you are correct. Maybe this plan will work:

1. Keep STi.
2. Buy new (used) car.
3. Get rid of new (used) car.
4. Return to step 1.

I'll have to lower my budget if I pay for STi storage, but that isn't a big problem.

Anyone know how much a monthly garage is? Heck, I could put tons of Christmas crap and other isht in storage as well...

I like the way you're thinking...
Only way I'm getting rid of mine is still 13 years off.

You take good care of yours, Ben.

Only 77k on mine, driving it since May '04. The last 5 years, I've only put on 6k per year.

I looked up storage costs. More expensive than I thought. Need to find someone with an empty garage bay, and I'll pay them rent. I don't want to have it sit outdoors.

Yep, that's about right. About $1500 a year to store a car...

Hey guys, greetings from the land of Skylines and Subies, hey Ben, how difficult/expensive would it be to get a JDM Skyline or Subie back to the states?

Pretty damn expensive. Looked into it when I was there in 2007 when I was on deployment there in misawa. I wanted to bring one really bad....

25 years old or strip the parts you want.
the large gorilla box at px will hold tranny. you need another one for motor.

my plan was to accumulate goodies and them have tmo
ship them home as house hold goods..which they fall under..

that way not having to pay for shipping..

You're not PCS'd there right - just what you P-3 folks call "deployed". The rest of the Navy goes onboard big grey things called ships. So I don't think the household goods is an option.

Hey now... 8 years in the navy and haven't been on the ship yet. But my day is about to come.

If you are there on a p-3 deployment you could take all the parts you want and get a hook-up with the supply guys and pack it in one of the tri-walls to ship everything back. My 2 buddy's packed one of those with so much Nissan and Honda parts it wasn't even funny.

^ this!

I really love the older skylines here, but you're right, it'd be too much. On the other hand, with a few bucks I wanted to save, I would really like to get a 207/257/Tranny/wiring harness and ECU, and swap them into the Bugeye. They're (subies/bugeye's) everywhere here. I hear them rumbling around daily. A lot of Legacy Spec B4's and STi Fozzy's too
