I'm not the biggest fan of the full dark look (Andrew has heard me say that plenty of times) but I think that the mixed lighting on the car is a bit of a problem overall. It's almost as if the car is Two-Face...the passenger side is really dark, but the driver side is bright and full of reflections. Yet, the passenger side headlight is clearly seen but we can't see any of the other car detail surrounding it. On top of that, the ground surrounding the car is kind of an odd, washed out grey, which doesn't match the high contrast of the car.

Sorry, I've had a bit of a rough week.

The composition is sound, but I might've gone just a little tiny bit lower in elevation. I also don't like how close the car is to the background...giving it a little more space I think would help the photo overall, so you don't feel so compressed.

If I want to get really nitpicky, the shadow is also kind of strange under the car, especially near the passenger side rear tire, because it looks like it ends abruptly, making that tire look like it's floating.
I can easily fix the shadow issue but I'm not sure about the side of the car. It's definitely not from me de saturating the background. I think it's a combination of the light source, the angle and that my car was completely filthy at the time. I might play around with it some more but it honestly doesn't bother me enough to get crazy over it.

I understand! We all appreciate the time you put in to this thread! I didn't have enough room to bring the car away from the background using my 85mm. I just liked the over all tone of the image. It has a dark feel to it.

Default Looking for advice

Hi Armin,

Thank you so much for posting this thread! Your work is awesome! I've read and re-read your tips about 3 times now, and I really think they've helped my photos - so thank you! I was wondering if you might have a second to critique some of my photos. Here are two that I shot tonight and adjusted slightly in Photoshop's RAW editor. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

So I decided I'm just going with the Fujifilm SL300. That's more camera than I need lol. I'll let photoshop handle the rest of the fancy process.

Drove around today and took some photos.

The shot from the rear isn't at all sharp and I should have cleaned the car off, but I like it otherwise. Think I need to invest in a circular polarizer:

Oh, and a question on composition:

More sky or less sky? I like both, but for different reasons.

Personally, I like less sky. But I have no professional experience to back that up. Just personal preference.

Neither do I, which is why I'm asking for opinions.

No professional experience here either, but I'm going to go with less sky on this one. For me, the sky is a little too washed out in the one with more sky. I might go with more sky if it was a bit deeper orange and the clouds were detailed.

Love the bug-eye!

Here's my friend's 600rr shot with the T2i and cheap 50mm 1.8, edited in Lightroom 4. I forgot to bump up the shadows so the detail in inside the fairings aren't that visible. I also edit my photos on a laptop so I'm never 100% positive if the exposure is correct when I start to edit them in post processing because of the horrible viewing angles of laptop screens. Is the exposure pretty spot on? Or is it over/under exposed? Any constructive criticism is appreciated.

P.S. I know it's not a car and I limited the size to 500k in Lightroom, so it's not the best quality.

Ok so you can only see it if you're logged in on the r6 forum where it's hosted. Weird, I did this same method for my for sale thread and I can still see them when not logged in on other forum. Oh well lol

I noticed I can't attach photos, that's why I was attaching it to another forum and then just using that link here. And I don't use photobucket, flickr, dropbox, etc etc. Are attachments disabled until a certain amount of posts?

First off, gorgeous bugeye!

My comment on the first picture is that you got a little too low, which actually makes the car look like it sits higher than it really does as the camera is pointed up at it.

If you're going to get that low, the car pretty much needs to be touching the ground as well, otherwise you risk it coming off like a truck since you're accenting all of that open pavement underneath it.

I think being a few inches higher off the ground would have made all the difference, plus all of that stuff Armin and others always say about rule of thirds and not centering the subject in your photos. I'm guilty of that as well all of the time.

Thanks for the kind words Your composition is pretty sound, but the car could come a tiny bit lower in the second shot of your friend's WRX. The main issue you've got with both of these is the lighting. Overall, they both need a bit more exposure and some white balance adjustments. The background is better in the first shot than in the second, since we can see cars in the dark behind the main subject. The ground looks wet, but I'd still get lower in elevation so it doesn't quite look like standing eye level.

So far so good though, you're definitely off to a good start! Give this another try during the daytime, since shooting at night is a bit more difficult overall than shooting during the day

I like your first shot a lot! Yes, it could be sharper, but the composition is very good and the cold white balance really makes you feel kinda cold just looking at the photo. I don't think you needed to clean the car off more than it already is.

As for the second/third one, I prefer less sky, only because the snow/ice covered ground is more interesting than a cloudless sky. The car could maybe move a little more to the right and a tiny bit down in the frame, but it's still pretty good where it is. You'll probably want some more exposure overall though, since it's pretty dark compared to the first photo.

Damn, that's a lot of snow! I like the first photo the best. The centered composition works great for how the crop, and it has almost a post-apocalyptic effect to it. I might try a different white balance for each of them though...you went a bit warm with these, but I'd be curious to see how it'd look with a colder white balance instead.
