Default VF34 Users Post here!

hello, i'll be buying my second scooby soon which will be a WRX this time around (I had a 99 2.5 RS). Im not exactly sure what year I get but hopefully an 04. Ive driven many, and I know it wont be fast enough for me fairly quickly. I've been doing a bit of reading about VF34's and peoples times and numbers but ive been reading mixed results. From what I read the VF34 is the right turbo for me, but I want more info before I make my final decision. Im also thinking of a TD05H-16G. My request is that you guys post your setups and numbers or any other relevant info for me so that I can see where to go with supporting parts and everything else. I posted here because im not looking for power bragging, i will be using this info for tech purposes only.

Also, im planning to make this reliable power if possible, anywhere near 300 hp at the wheels would be perfect for me. Do you guys recommend running 2 different boost settings ? a low and high for track ? Or if i attained my goal number should I just keep that as a daily ? Sorry for the nubbish questions but im fairly new to forced induction.

Thanks in advance.

The VH34 is a good daily driver. That said the 16g is just a better turbo overall. You wont make 300whp with the vf34.Well not safely.Right now I have the vf34 with a OTS Cobb AP 2.5 map.Thats it one map only.If I got it Protune I can make alittle more power.I like it but just wanted some more power.Thats why I have my 18g waiting to be installed next week.

PS:
I have my vf34 and pink injectors for sale if you want them.I give you a great price for both.

I dont have the car so I wont get ahead of myself yet lol. I just like to plan ahead. As I read more about the 16g im starting to lean towards that side, and since you say I wont make 300 with a VF34 and you have one then it furthers me even more from that option. I'll still keep the post here, im interested in peoples supporting setups regardless, as im guessing the supporting mods wont be that different weather i choose a 34 or a 16g anyway. Thanks for your response Needles.

ive got the vf34 with aps tmic, sti injectors, walboro fp, perrin turbo inlet, gm boost solenoid, aps up pipe, full catless turboback, cobb sf intakte, and a protune and im making 297whp at 20psi on a stock ej20 with a nice and conservative tune and an excellent a/f ratio thanks to agile auto. i would highly recomend the vf34...imho

See there is a supporter. 297 whp is damn close to 300, but I definitely wont be running a top mount IC , or catless exhaust. Ill get the catless up pipe for sure, and the DP with a high flow.

Worldrallyblue what are your trap speeds ? and when does ur turbo spool up ? (approximate RPM is what im after)

What is ur Air/fuel ratio if I might ask ? I also plan to do a fairly conservative tune on my car if I can just to keep a safety margin.

My goals arent to get great times in any one event, I'd like my car to get good times, in many different types of events.

Im sure nearly anything can be done, but my number one goal is to have this thing reliable, therefore I will be investing into a good fmic.

If run the VF-34 for a year and a half. If I had to do it over again... 16G or 18G.

Again, im leaning more and more towards a 16 g.

What kind of boost controller do you guys reccomend ? Electronic or manual ?

And what EMS has user selectable maps besides the Access Port ? I ask because I want to run a low and high boost map, low for day to day, and high for track just so that im not destorying the block constantly. Is this realistic and do-able or am i just wishing for things ?

you can research this to death (and many have) but in the end, its a tossup. you wont tell a noticeable difference between one or the other, not enough to regret your decision at least. i say just go with one and dont look back. the only reason you could possibly be unhappy with your car is if you should have been looking at 18G or larger sized turbos in the first place, and you were way off from the start.
i'd venture to say that most of the guys hitting 300whp on a VF34 or small 16G are only doing it because the dynos they are on tend to read high, but its not like 300 is the magic number... 280whp will make for a very quick very fun street car.
if you do want to complicate your system a bit more in order to get more power out of it, think about alcohol injection and/or an external wastegate.

My car put down 282whp with VF34 @ 18.5psi. If you want more top-end, you may also want to consider VF22. Why not spend ~$500 for bigger TMIC and custom tune?

Are you guys with the VF34's having any problems with the stock tranny? That's probably the only thing holding me back aside from the money.

300 with a vf34 and a stock tmic, and the dyno doesnt read high? meh...
you've either got some extras under the hood, or... well, i'd be curious to see what your car makes on a different dyno.

i'm not going to stoop to your level and muck up this thread, but what i said in my last post still holds true... without knowing a thing about your car, your tuner, [your attitude!,] or that dyno, i'd like to see it on a different dyno for comparision.

I am happy with my VF34. Right now I am running a PDX map but will be getting it tuned by Agile in about a month or so. The improvement over the TDO4 up top is phenomenal. I used to use the tdo4's lack of top end pull as a rev limiter. When the car stopped pulling I knew it was about time to shift. The VF34 had me bouncing of the rev limiter for a week until I adjusted to it.

Either turbo will do what you want. I only went with the VF34 because I already had a map in my AP to run it . Now there are FP16g maps available from Cobb. If I were doing it today I would most likely go that route.

I know the AP is very popular here, but one suby guru I talk to in person said it fried his ECU! I don't know how it was installed or what went wrong, but that just scared me away from them right away. I've been poking around in the Engine management forums and I think my choice will be a UTEC.

And also I'd like to say that Im not DYING for 300hp. If I come up a bit short, tough, but my priority is to improve the stock WRX as much as possible, without cracking the block, and to maintain decent reliability. I like the option of having 2 (or more) maps tuned just to keep a low boost mode for day to day travel, and a higher boost for track days.

Thanks for all your help guys. I bet I could have found all the answers to my questions alone, but aside from being faster, I can throw in my own nub questions as the thread goes to clarify what I dont understand. Besides, this is a tech forum, you gurus should love to help rookies like me....unless you're trying to keep all the fun to yourselves
