I'm procrastinating putting my 2 pulley set on. Still kind of paranoid about the whole harmonic damper argument. Little side question here, if the engine is so supposed to be so well balanced, why does it shake at idle? Anyhow, I'll probably throw the pulleys on in conjunction with a couple other mods, just so I'm sure I feel some kind of improvement and I don't feel so bad about blowing so much cash.

I'm pretty sure that I read in Subaru's little magazine they put out that the EJ20 Turbo doesn't have a balancer. I assumed that's one of the reasons it idles so rough (besides the rough cam grinds).

No, it's not just that. I've had many straight 4's (mostly Honda) and ALL of which idled MUCH smoother than the WRX. I couldn't even tell the car was on.

the idle on a loaner WRX I had (DEMO) was rough as hell (it was beating to death to), whereas my WRX (broken in properly) is a lot smoother (still rougher than a GSR motor for example). I just think it's because it's firing left to right.

That is a typical characteristic of a flat-4 engine. The engine will move side to side and will transmit some of this vibration to the chassis.

Either way, it's a small price to pay for a well-balanced engine.
