Gotta find some DEI products? Hear my depressing story
Okay i love my WRX way to much i took friday/today off from work and all i did as detail my car, inside and out, honestly my best work. I went to a mall(Garden State mall) for dinner at Legal seafood- good place hot hostess! i come back to my car to see that some one kicked my front quarter panel in.
Now i did realise that i parked near a bus stop where every Non functional teen in northern NJ goes through, you gotta be pretty dirty to ride those buses! When i walked backed to my car my viper alarm gave me a four chirp, i was like comon now hopefully it was someones subs not a actually hit. As i got in my car, three girls who were waiting for the bus say hey is that your car and i was like yea, there were some kids were here earlier and claimed it to be there's. and they were sitting on your hood and as i checked it out i saw my dent..I am willing to bet Mr. Dent Wizard can fix it,its just now im out a few hundred bucks! then i though at least they didnt key my car . okay now i have a viper alarm 500ESP what pagers, shock sensor, James bond type of alarms can i get, i do like the tear gas that pours out from under the car ,i'm sure that would creat a great buffer zone. and where can i find these great products. thanks chuck

the pageing system sucks you more then likely won't get beeped if your in the mall or whatever and your car goes off....... you should get a prox sensor.... the 500esp already has a shock sensor so you don't need that.. also be more careful were you park..

Like any other paging system, DEI's range will vary depending on what's between it and the pager. In a year or two, the fancy telematics brains/alarms will be more widely available, which will call your cellphone or beep your pager & show on a website exactly what's happening to your car, and where it is.
Definitely get a 2-zone microwave sensor -- that way you can set it so anyone getting within a few inches of the car will set off a warning chirp series. |

Your 500 ESP should have a dual shock sensor already. I have the same alarm and it does. You may want to increase the sensitivity in it.
As for proxy sensors, I am not a big fan because they false too much. A strong wind blows some flyers on your car, leaves fall the wrong way, etc. can sometimes trigger a proxy sensor. The pager has not been released yet but it should be out soon. As for how good it is, I would be reluctant to put too much faith in it. As previously mentioned, their range is often varied and places like shopping malls are so big and have so much crap going on that it might not reach you anyway. Of course, if you want to spend the money and it gives you a bit more peace of mind, by all means go for it. I plan to in the future. DEI products can be purchased at local dealers but realize that the warranty will be void if installed by anyone other than an authorized dealer. Keenan |

Time for a new alarm
Your best bet is to get away from DEI if you are looking for those features. IMO I would recommend looking into a CompuStar alarm/starter. They work great. It is a two way communicating alarm with tons of features. It comes with one remote the brain siren brain and engine kill. The remote is alittle big but needs to be for what it does. It has a picture of a car on it and if your shock sensor goes off it will let you know by showing a hammer hiting the car, if your door is opened it will let you know by showing the door opening and closing. The unit will run you about 400-500 installed but it is well worth it. Also with the antenna that comes with the unit you will have an estimated 1/4 mile range. You can always buy the extended range antenna for I believe 35 and you will have an estimated 1/2 mile range. I never saw any problems with it and it will let you know exactly what is going on.

As for the estimated 1/4 and 1/2 mile ranges, those are without anything between the antenna and receiver. In the real world, the transmitting antenna will be hidden out of plain sight, there will be buildings, trees, etc. around, so real-life range will be much shorter. The best thing to do is to figure out what range you need, then take the paging system and set it up (uninstalled). See if it works over that distance, and maybe a bit longer. If it doesn't, it certainly won't in your car.! |

I was sure DEI was coming out with a new model of pager. Perhaps we are talking of different things? My installer told me when I got my 500ESP that the new pager was not for retail yet here in Alberta, Canada.

If you're talking about the LCD system (pager&remote in one) that isn't coming out until September. It cannot be added to an existing DEI alarm, it's all [new] or nothing.

Dunbar, that is the one I was referring to. I have not even seen pictures of it. Anyway, if you bought a Viper alarm recently or buy a Viper alarm in the near future, make sure you get one of the second generation ones that allow you to attach the pager module. I made sure mine could when I bought it.

In my specific situation, my car is parked in the first basement level (nearest ground level) of my building, diagonally opposite the corner where my 3rd floor apartment sits. If I place my pager near a window at one end of the apt, I can receive the paging signal no problem from the basement. If I place my pager at a window at the other end of the apt (further from car), it only receives the signal some of the time. Last edited by armand1; 05-13-2002 at 01:25 PM. |
