Well, this thread sure became a train wreck.
My two cents: -Nobody said that every CVT 2012 Impreza would get 36 mpg highway. It depends on the conditions, and on how you drive it, and how far you drive it, and random variations between cars. Some will do better, some will do worse. If you aren't happy with your car, you can take it up with Subaru, or call a lawyer, or sell the car. -Is a manual transmission always inherently superior to automatic? No. Automatics have come a very long way, and they'll continue to improve. Most of us will probably agree that manuals are generally preferred by people who want to be more involved in their driving, but that doesn't apply to everyone. -My personal anecdote: My 5 speed gets 34 mpg cruising at 70+ mph on the highway. Most of my driving is more local though, so I've been averaging slightly under 30.

and an average around 30 is expected. this thread took quite the swing in the wrong direction. I'd say that most people are able to get around 30, (around not exactly) which is the average between city and highway. If you're shooting for great highway MPG the lesson to learn is that you need to drive slower. EPA estimates are based on slow driving and unfortunately that's how they can prove their estimates are true.
If I go 50mph on the highway, I'm able to get around 36 MPG, without cruise control. Which is close to the EPA estimate. |

So after a long road trip to Colorado and back from MN I did some testing at different speeds. According to the instantaneous MPG reading I get around 28.5 MPG going 75 MPH, 30 MPG going 70, 32 MPG going 65, 34 MPG going 60, 36 MPG going 55, and 38 going 50 (didn't feel like going any slower than that). I tested these by resetting the trip meter in 10 mile segments on my way back so they are not the most accurate. It did appear that for every 5 MPH I slowed down, I gained 2 MPG on the reading.
PS I did not make this thread for people to fight. Please keep the purse swinging to a minimum or use a different thread. Last edited by RJSoobs251; 04-02-2013 at 02:40 PM. |

Doesn't the EPA test cars at 55 or 60 MPH for highway MPG so this would be pretty much right on?

Other interesting facts from MPG for Speed
According to studies backed by the department of energy, the average car will be at its advertised MPG at 55 mph. But as the speed increases: - 3% less efficient at 60 mph - 8% less efficient at 65 mph - 17% less efficient at 70 mph - 23% less efficient at 75 mph - 28% less efficient at 80 mph Regardless of your vehicle, engine, or size, the numbers hold true. Green Car Congress did a study comparing different car model against this topic. This effect happens for two reasons: 1) Increasing air resistance. According to CNN, "Pushing air around actually takes up about 40% of a car's energy at highway speeds. Traveling faster makes the job even harder...The increase is actually exponential, meaning wind resistance rises much more steeply between 70 and 80 mph than it does between 50 and 60. " 2) Engines are designed for specific speed, temperature, and rpm ranges. Driving out of these ranges goes against the fundamental design of the engine. Interesting Facts If the national speed limit were reset to 55, it would save 1 billion barrels of oil per year. The old national speed limit of 55 mph was created to address the energy crisis in the early 1970's - not safety purposes (although it did help safety). Other applications This principle not only applies to cars, but other vehicles as well. Recently airlines have been slowing down their planes in an effort to ease fuel consumption. Most flights are being decreased by 10 mph, adding an average of 2-3 minutes more travel time in most cases. - Southwest Airlines will save $42 million in fuel costs per year. - JetBlue will save $13.6 million per year - United will save $20 million per year Last edited by RJSoobs251; 04-02-2013 at 04:30 PM. |

Also, according to them I should get less mpg at 35 mph than at 55 mph. I actually get 24% better mpg. But just go ahead with your touchy-feely trip to lala land... |

I'm willing to bet passengers don't even know their flight was just a few minutes longer, nor care because ATC delays can be longer than 3 extra minutes in cruise.
And what I posted about my situation is fact. If I were to slow down 10mph, my fuel economy increases by 15-17%, which means instead of spending 200 every 2 weeks I could spend 170ish, at the expense of me spending an extra 9 minutes/day in the car. |

You would almost think driving the impreza at speeds averaging over 70mph will give you less than the 36mph promised on the window sticker! Obviously, a big fraud! |

On the other side of the equation, there are CVT owners here getting excellent mpg's. How it is driven is important. |

They go into plenty of detail about how its driven in the many update aticles they should be accessible fom the link. Their bezt avg was 30, low was 21,iirc. I dont see them being any harder on it than C&D was on theirs, but I'm not the one driving it. Just thought it was a good read for long term testing.

I had to leave work late today and get home in time for an appointment, so I stayed in the left lane, with traffic. Are they doing summer gas yet? I'm glad my car is rated at 36 mpg highway. 100+ mile freeway drive, slight headwind for part of it, 39.7 mpg, avg speed 83 mph.
Oh, wait - that was my Corolla. Wrong board. |

But you already knew that, because that is what you keep whining about, that the car does not give you EPA numbers for your high speed drives. I guess you should torch the Impreza and drive the more impressive corolla, I hear they have a nice forum you can visit as well! |

Lol you guys are funny.
Just my two cents, If you decrease speed on your commute, that doesnt neccessarily decrease time unless your only accounting time from onramp to off ramp with no traffic. Case in point, I often witness people who had to speed to get to the upcoming red light where Im cruising the speed limit i eventually catch up right behind them or pass them in the next lane if I time it correctly. |

I easily get low 30's for MPG on my commutes to and from work about 75% highway at 60MPH (Speed Limit is 55) when it is warm. When it is cold I get more like 26 MPG since its only a 10 mile commute. Pretty understandable.
