I found that Lowe's and Home Depot had the cans the cheapest in my area ~$6 a can (for black).

Personally, I'd just peel it off and start again. If the first picture is what you got with your first coat, that's part of your problem. The first coat is WAY too thick.

Also, not knowing the weather conditions you were dipping in (was it cold/super humid?), could have impacted the drying as well. 30-45 minutes is also a really long time to wait between coats. If you were following anything the back of the can said, ignore it.

As others stated, keeping the cans nice and warm and shaken up really helps with a nice even mist.

My method is typically as follows:
  1. Make sure the piece is clean and dry. Rubbing alchohol works great most of the time.
  2. Get one of the http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-241526-Comfort-Grip/dp/B0015RJ41I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1366832593&sr=8-5&keywords=Rustoleum+spray+paint+grip. Lowes/Home Depot also have them. http://www.amazon.com/Rust-oleum-243546-Spray-Grip-Handle/dp/B000DZFE44/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366832593&sr=8-1&keywords=Rustoleum+spray+paint+grip is not the one you want.
  3. Place the item up high enough so you can get side/upward angle for the edges. At least knee high should be enough.
  4. Shake the can really well (and make sure it's at least room temp. I like to sit the cans in a bucket or sink of hot water before hand (especially on cold days). If it's cold, toss 'em back in between coat.
  5. When spraying, keep the can around 4-5" away. Do not follow the directions on the can or you'll have an textured orange peel effect.
  6. Test your spray on cardboard to make sure it's even and not splattering and blobbing.
  7. Spray a nice even coat keeping your wrist locked. Pay attention to your stroke and see if you are pulling up or down at the end of your stroke. Up puts you at risk for orange peel texture. Down you risk thick blobs and bubbles, etc. You always want to keep the can at the same distance through the stroke.
  8. Don't stop your stroke in the middle of your item, you'll notice a thicker vertical blob when you do.
  9. For your first coat you want a nice ~50% coverage. You don't want to thick or you'll end up with an uneven finish (as you've seen).
  10. I typically wait 10-15 minutes between coats unless it's cold and I can't bring it indoors.
  11. When possible, move the items inside to dry if you are outside. Wind, bugs, grass, will always pick up and blow crap on your drying dip (at least for me it does). Or your neighbor will decide he absolutely must mow his monkey humping grass 5' from where you are working.
  12. Shake the can really well between coats. I like to give it a good 10 second shake every 60 seconds or so. Test your spray pattern again before jumping back in.
  13. Apply the second coat about like the first coat. Thin and even. You'll proabably be ~75% transparency.
  14. Third coat, I go a little heavier, but not overdoing it.
  15. 4th coat, I usually do a bit heavier than the 3rd. This is usually plenty for most applications to provide a nice smooth and durable finish.
  16. 5th coat+ if your item will be subject to heavier abuse (grills, wheels, etc).

I hope this helps.

i have a question, sorry if its already been covered somewhere in the last 44 pages....
what about wheel mounting and balancing? can i spray my rims, then mount and balance the tires? i suspect that won't work, but has anyone done it?

I would be afraid of the process screwing up the dip. I just got a new set of winters put on and am doing the dip now for that reason.

If it does they sell a patch/repair kit that allows you to repair the dip without having to remove it all and start again from square 1.

I have had tire put on my wheels that are dipped. Discount Tire did a pretty good job and didn't mess it up, there was a few small tears that I fixed.

If you are doing a standard color and have leftover you will be fine. Just have some Xylene on standby. When you get the tire mounted you'll need to lightly rub a little bit of Xylene over the areas that are damaged. Once that is dry touch it up with your plastidip.

The purpose of using the Xylene (thinner) over the damaged areas is to reliquify the plastidip and make sure it is bonded to the wheel before you spray the touck up.

I live in Maine, my car is fully dipped (see my photo above). Our asverage temp this winter has been about 15 degrees, we've hit lows of -20. I haven't had any issue whatsoever with my dip. My roomate has had his car dipped for almost 2 years now in Maine, through 2 winters, no problems whatsoever either. We never wash our cars.

I've done my scoop, grille, roof rack, front lip, and rear turn signals with black dip. (Don't worry, they're still legal. They're still visible from 100+ yards away in daylight, like Texas law requires. I just hated the amber but can't afford the JDM GT-B smoked tail lights at the moment) I still need to do the side skirts, rear skirt, and the bumper guard when it warms up/isn't rainy again. The all black accents look so much better than the stock mismatched black and dark grey accents, to me at least. I'm thinking about dipping the wheels in vintage gold, too.
