Default The 5 Dumbest Car Features of All Time

Quote:
Probably the sole most moneymaker in the auto industry are the add-on features. Yes, we all know that if you live in LA, you’re going to want a sunroof, and that’s going to cost you a ridiculous $2,000+ dollars.
Or if you live in Boston, what’s a car without seat heaters? So maybe those are reasonable requests, but it’s the odd things that make car bill go from $20,000 to $32,000. Think again.

Do you really need all those extra features? Ehh…. maybe not.
Well, here are the top 5 most ridiculous car features that you really don’t need.

#5
Fake wood Panels -
Seriously, what is the point? It’s ugly, and we know it’s fake.

#4 –
The Vinyl Top
If it’s not a convertible, there doesn’t need to be anything of the roof.

#3 – Pinstripes

Installed at the dealer as a way to mark up the price. Not only do they cost you extra, they actually detract from the lines of the car. If your notdriving a custom hot-rod you don’t need pinstripes.

#2 – The Push-Button Start

Most of us do not drive race cars. This rather pointless device, tends to just add an extra step to starting up your car. Sure it looks cool, but that is about it’s only function.

#1 – The Automatic Seatbelt

Mandated in the late 80’s when passive restraints became a law. These seats were good in theory, except for the fact that the lap belt was no part of the program. Without a proper lap restraint, these automatic belts were essentially useless. They tended to break easily, and often strangled you if you open the door and stuck your head out.

I can not believe people get paid to make these kind of lists. Pin stripes can actually add to the car, and push button starting is actually kind of nice.

Especially on my Touareg where the key never needs to be taken out of my pocket to start it. Keyless entry and keyless start is a very handy feature.

I agree. Keyless entry and start means never having to take your keys out of your pocket and never worrying about leaving the keys in a locked car, not because the key never leaves your pocket, but even if the key is in a locked car, the doors will unlock when open the door.

Add to the list steam powered headlight nozzles and mini headlight wipers...nothing says useless than these items for your headlights.

I think they meant the cars that require you to insert a key and push the button. Didn't the S2000 have that?

I don't know, looks like a journalism troll. I don't think one sentence in that whole barf-bag makes sense and the list is completely subjective.

Except for when you're driving in winter and your headlights are no longer useful due to the slush and ice caked on to them.

Can't believe that the automatic transmission wasn't on that list.

^^ I wouldn't go that far but paddle shifters on AT seem pretty pointless.

Yup; headlight nozzles and wipers can be very useful for clearing slush/ice/salt.

No way, Id kill for headlight squirters and wipers. So much winter road scum, they need cleaning off as often as the windscreen. Doesnt take long before no light will come through the lenses. Definitely a regional option. You wont need them say in Dallas or Temecula.

I think fake wood panels on old jeeps are COOL!

My first car ('72 Chevy Nova) met it's demise due to rust forming under the vinyl top.

Pinstripes can be very cool, but depends on the car.

Push button start with keyless fob is a fantastic use of technology and every bit as convenient as power windows, imho.

The automatic seat belt is a great example of nanny state BS.

Now, I want my five minutes back for reading and responding to this thread.

My '93 Legacy had the auto belts. Pretty pointless feature when you still had to manually fasten the lap belt.

These... especially with HID headlights which don't throw off enough heat to melt the snow on the lenses.

I wasn't out of gas.. I had to find a place with some cover because the headlights were becoming completely obscured by the snow every 10 miles or so (traveling at speed on the interstate) thanks to the STI's HIDs and lack of washers.. The washers are actually mandatory in some countries whenever HIDs are equipped.

My MCS (with HIDs) has the sprayers which go to work every so often when you spray the windshield. I've yet to have to stop to clean them off during a bad snow storm because they're so efficient.

.. and, of course... they're available outside the US for Subarus:

before subaru, people were getting around, and still are, without awd.

it won't make you car stop any better and can get through snowy roads with either front wheel drive or rear wheel drive like most of the population does.

and i did have 5 subarus in a row

My r32 has those headlight washers. I haven't had to use them much though.

My wife had an a3 with a door lock button On the back of the center counsel for the back seat passengers. That was useless, all it did was lock, it didn't unlock. The doors automatically locked at speeds above 5mph anyway. I never understood that feature.

You're so right... my awd was useless on my icey commute the other morning where I saw a few cars in a ditch on the side of the road. It was also useless in the deep snow I found myself in last year. It's also useless for getting in the hole of traffic from a dead stop during a downpour. And slowing down with engine braking in snowy conditions with the transfer of power to the front wheels is useless.

More "useless" stuff:

Turbochargers.

More than 100 hp.

More than four forward speeds.

Electric windows.

Electric door locks.

Keyless entry.

Alloy wheels.

Anything wider than 80 series tires.

Any color other than black or white.

Tinted glass.

Cruise control.

Air conditioning.

...and happily, I'm able to afford all that stuff.

But I tell ya... I still miss my '86 GTI with manual steering. Laugh all you want -- it was great. Heavy, direct, delightful.

I'd really love headlight washers this time of year in New England. I'd trade our useless foglights for those in a jiffy.

Count me in the camp that thinks headlight washers are pointless, but I tell you I'd kill for a heater element under the windshield wipers like they have on my mom's Forester... wipers icing up constantly sucks.

thanks for the support White Knight.

after spraying headlights them nothing says dirty like more dirt caking onto a wet headlight!

Its pointless. they dont dry off. is it strictly water or windshield washer fluid they use to spray on your headlights? oh no's that amonia is going to F#C% up your paint! Who'se going to wipe it off when your traveling down the road? just let it spray your bumper and hood?

I still see it as being a horribly designed feature in cars. If it sprays and whipes dry your headlights, id buy it.

I can't see how anyone driving at night in New England on wet, salty/sandy/dirty roads for even 20 minutes would *not* want these. Presuming that they work, of course.

I had headlight sprayers on my A4. I thought they were great. At highways speeds, they did a nice job of keeping the lens clear enough to not hinder the light.

If you are looking for something that sprays and wipes, older MBs and I think Volvos had a wiper for each headlight.
