Nice pick-up bud! Enjoy it, they're quite the car. The VW scene is about all there is at home, so we see some pretty sick VW's in the area.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever read.
GIAC - those tunes were mediocre at best, for early MK4's and previous. Tunes are junk and blow about every engine they go into now, same with REVO, but they were never any good in anything. They run too lean alll the time.

APR is conservative versus Unitronic, but both are very reliable and make good power with no add ons, not to mention they're adaptive. Where APR is so close to him though, it makes sense to go that route.

Again, congrats and enjoy!

You know nothing, I had apr on my MKV GTi and had issue after issue with random cells and my power was choppy. Apr couldn't figure it out. I took it too AWE tuning, which is one of the top tuners for VW/Audi and they pulled my ecu, stripped it, reloaded the factory tune and then flashed the GIAC. My car was smooth and drove great for the next 3 years. AWE stop offering APR due to multiple issues and only offers GIAC. I trust AWE, not Internet know it alls. OP, do what you want

I rode in my friends new 2.0t jetta and I was very surprised with its straight line quickness. I had a stg2 STi that would have eaten the VW alive, but I'm not sure how my stg1 LGT would do against my buddies VW.

My LGT on the other hand is quite refined inside and at stg2 will be nice and quick, but harsh on the road bc of suspension mods to get it where I wanted it turning without spending big $.

Nice car though, enjoy it.

Could be because some people want the power to be delivered to those 4 points where it matters the most.

That's pretty ignorant to say. I knew quite a few engineers that I went to school with that were pretty damn smart. And one of my buddies went to a top engineering school in the country who now works for a top defense contractor out here. You could say he's pretty smart I guess.

Now if you want to talk street smarts vs. book smarts, well, that's a different story.

damn Scotty,

slinging out the opinion bombs. I've found engineers to be some of the most forward thinking people I've ever met. Now Liberal arts majors... that's like playing russian roulette with characters, you never know who the whack-job is. Me.. I'm somewhere in the middle, CGMA/CPA accountant and couldn't be happier helping out both of these demographics

oh and OP, hope you enjoy it! Love those R's

LOL sure. A lot of engineers may be social misfits but I can assure you that the majority are not idiots. Honestly your post is one of the dumbest I've read in the internet in a while and you have the nerve to call another group idiots.

d00000000000d....maybe when you get a little wiser you will understand

calculation is NOT thinking...it is numbers

numbers dont think

people think

people with too many numbers floating around in their heads are usually idiots

Yeah, because application isn't part of an engineering job at all. All plug and play with numbers What an overgeneralized, uneducated opinion you have. Just remember, opinions are like ***holes. Everybody's got one and yours just so happens to stink

got out of my STI after five trouble-filled months. thanks Subaru.

have been weighing my options since, and that hasn't been as hard as it normally would be because last spring i was in the same position before i decided on the STI.

Golf R, 135is, CPO M3, CPO 997 C2S/C4S or CPO Cayman S are in the running.

the Golf R is a very nice car. great paint, great interior quality. overall fit/finish is top notch, esp for an entry level-based car. super easy package selection; you either get the car with sunroof and nav and all the stuff that comes with that package, or you don't.

a big bummer for me though was the lack of color options. no silver available in any way, shape or form.

i was slightly disappointed in the fact that the AWD system doesn't hold a candle to that in the STI, the gearbox/clutch is totally numb (STI is a dream) and while the engine is proven, the fact that you can't flash and restore the exact factory data is a red flag for me because, apparently, VW is very sensitive to that and automatically picks up these things by plugging in the vehicle if it goes in for service for anything. and honestly who is able to avoid at least some sort of warranty visit with a VW? now, whether that detection/"flagging" happens with the Golf R, because it has an older ECU than the GTI...i'm not sure, but i couldn't find conclusive info and truthfully the luxury of the AP's technology spoiled me a bit. then people were crying about the OE clutch being barely adequate for even the slightest bit of power upgrades. found that to be a strange concern on such a relatively proven powertrain.

there were just too many questions on the car vs. the overly proven STI. the STI was stout enough for me with just the stage 1 flash and no other mods. the Golf R is not. it's ok, and totally liveable for many people, but it's just not that pleasing on the power tip for that amount of money unless you mod and that whole scene seems like it's getting pretty tight re: VW corporate.

that said, enjoy the car. i think you'll be pleased once it has the tune and associated intake if you can stomach the potential warranty hazards. the OE modding catalog is almost endless because of the euro stuff and cross-model interchangeability with so many things, such being able to add a Passat auto-dimming rear view. you HIGHLY value the car's strong points and that means more than anything.

Calculating is thinking . You could argue that 2 + 4 doesn't require much thinking but if you look at something like calculus 3 that is essentially calc in three dimensions then that without a doubt requires thinking.

Most of my thinking is in numbers and images and I am not an idiot.

I was also close to going into engineering. There's obviously a reason you feel the way you do but I can assure you most engineers aren't incompetent.

Of course I'll play! I LOVE a good game of pigeon chess. Ok, my next move is reminding you of the fact that ALL of your important commodities were designed by engineers. The computer you type on. The house you live in. The streets you walk. The car you drive. Your TV. Your refrigerator. Getting water to your house. Your soap. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Now it's your turn to poop on the board.

Good luck with your GolfR, OP.

MY car buddy got a 2012 new last year. It was fun. And then it blew itself up in less than 6 months. The timing belt pulley backed itself out; timing belt goes flying and the pistons smash the valves an the engine seizes

VW reps came to look at it and repaired it for free. They noted that the pulley is a press fit design. My friend asked, "what's different about this new engine that will insure the same thing won't happen again."

They told him, "hopefully it wasn't built on a Friday."

I hope you have a better experience.

Everybody should back off Scotty. I am a Mechanical engineer and I find myself more than competent analytically and in critical thinking skills. But Scotty is entitled to his opinions. Obviously he has met with some rather shady engineers.

I will defend Scotty this way.

Do you know what you call the engineer who took 9 years to get his degree that finished with a C- from a sketchy school?

You call him an engineer. Same goes for what you call the doctor who finished last in his class. You call him a doctor. A degree does not guarantee competence or intelligence.

Scotty may have had run in's with very limited narrow minded number cruncher engineers. I have met them, and have no disdain for them, there are jobs for engineers who can just crunch numbers. They can be a valuable asset if put into a position that can exploit their talents.

However, most engineers, are fantastic problem solvers, which requires critical thinking, analytical mastery of numbers, and an in depth view of materials, science, physics and human factors.

Scotty, if I am an idiot to you, that is fine, but I still consider you a long time friend.

As for the imploding R posted above. Not too worried. Every car has a weak point somewhere. Maybe VW's have more than others. But you cannot go through life scared of what might happen.

I plan to enjoy this car every single day as it is just that much fun to drive!

builthatch, I find the power in the Golf R very satisfying. Stock it feels faster than my 2011 WRX did when it was stock. It MOST DEFINITELY handles worlds better than my WRX did, even with tires and sways.

I think I have found a wonderful happy place with this car. If it blows up, it blows up. I plan on enjoying it every single day I have it.

The standards that must be met to even get into medical school mean that even doctors who are last in their class are smart enough to be excellent doctors.

Last in the class isn't even terrible, the bars for passing are high enough that even if you are last you still did pretty well.

my girl would tell you bunches of stories about these brilliant students in medical school. Simply put, a scary amount screw off on their phones or laptops on assnovel (Facebook) during classes.
