If you're losing an argument, turn to sarcasm. Typical. Like I said, I can get 50 mpg at 45 mph. So what.

if you want good MPG you have to get the Sport model with the roofrails....

Original argument: "New Impreza doesn't get EPA numbers." Evidence presented: "My driving style is fast." Counter-evidence presented: "A light-footed driving style does achieve EPA numbers." New argument: "New Impreza doesn't get real-world numbers for me like other similarly rated cars." I can live with this result. There's really nothing left to talk about. |

Will some people still hate it? Obviously. Will it affect the resale value? Nope, more people pay attention to Consumer Reports than pay attention to the vocal minority who don't like the car they just bought. At least they can resell it easily, and move on to something else (and another forum, one might think). We who like the car, and don't intend on trading it in immediately, will live on NASOIC long after they have gone. May they rest in peace. |

As for the other stuff, I made sure my tires were at 32/30 per Subaru, and most of the road conditions were normal smooth asphalt. Some rough patches, but not many. |

This is kind of a ramble, wild speculation, and only slightly related to MPGs so, apologies.
While driving a cold engine this morning and wondering about the lack of power and high rpms, I started thinking of a conversation I had back in college with an aerospace engineer buddy. We were talking about high and low torque loads in turbine engines and car transmissions and this got me wondering about the warmup sequence we aren't so fond of in the Impreza. I'm guessing the Subaru engineers are thinking of cleanliness AND longevity by pumping a lot of fuel into the engine for a short time. As we know, the extra fuel will heat the engine, oil, and cat sooner than lean efficient burn to end up getting the benefits sooner rather than later. While the oil is cold, it offers less friction reducing ability (per that neat oil website someone put up a while back). So, if programming tells the torque converter to lockup later and the CVT to use a lower gear, the car ends up running in a high rpm but low torque fashion which greatly reduces driveline stresses until the liquids are at a happy temperature. That seems like a very thoughtful thing to do IF it's true. I hope this car lasts forever. |

overall i agree with what you posted, BUT extra fuel actually cools the combustion chamber. in a piston airplane where you can manually control fuel trim, if you start to see cylinder head temps rise, you can bump the mixture up a little and watch them drop dramatically so more fuel doesn't always burn hotter, and less fuel doesn't always burn hotter Last edited by flyboy1100; 03-27-2013 at 03:18 PM. |

Mpg takes a hit from emissions restrictions, and emissions get more restricted all the time.
PZEV is likely going to be the only version offered for sale among all new cars soon Subaru is one of the early adopters, and a handful of states, but the rest will inevitably follow... |

Yeah, I got the WT's off yesterday as well. 30 miles of running around yesterday has already shown a slight improvement. But what an awesome little car in the snow with WT's. Hopefully whatever we get from here on out is minimal to none. John |

Better take your cars in to the dealer. I got 53 mpg the other day. I think I'll try to improve on that today. You know you have to do an immediate two way run before it counts though.

No, that was with my CVT Impreza at 40 mph. I never checked the Corolla at that speed, but it gets over 60 mpg at 50 mph. At 50 the Impreza gets about 45. I'm going to check the Impreza at 35 These are two way runs, very little wind or other traffic on a flat level road.

Refueled yesterday. Hand calc. average for this last tank came out to 30 MPG. Did more stop and go, used A/C, and shorter trips under 10 mi. than normal this time around. Vehicle equipped with CVT FWIW.

I drove by my test section today in the CVT, and decided to see what I would get at 35 mph. 56 mpg!
