Default Aux wiring help needed

Hey fella's, been a while...

I need some help. I'm trying to wire in some PIAA 520's on my wagon and want to have them turn on and off with the high beams. Strangely enough the wires going into the high beams are hot all the time. I'm not to savvy on this stuff so a quick job turned into a head scratcher.

How can I get this to work so my wife doesn't have to hit to switches to keep from blinding oncoming traffic?

Thanks,
~Turk

Wire both the switch hot and switch ground from the relay to the constant headlight 12v and the ground to the highbeam ground, respectively. This is because headlights are ground switched versus hot switched so there isn't a delay between lights when switching modes.

OK, I'm gong to think this through out-loud, so to speak.

I took the high beam light out of it's connection... When I stuck the tester in the connection one side was hot constantly. The other side would go dead when I would turn the high beams on.

So, on the PIAA wiring harness, out of the relay, there's the switch power wire and the black relay ground. I'm guessing that's the switch ground... Anyway, you're saying I wire the switch power into the wire that has constant power and the relay ground into the wire that goes out when I turn the high beams on?

Almost. The hot side is right, but you want the ground that is LIVE when the highs come on.

I'm confused as all hell now... If I wire the switch power to the wire on the high beams thats hot constantly the PIAA's won't go off when I switch back over to low beam.

I didn't follow either.

What I could have illustrated in 30 seconds with a pencil, I've now wasted 10 minutes getting onto the computer. Should have drawn it out and taken a dang picture.

This will do what you want it to.

I don't remember terminal numbers for relays, 42, 43, 86, 87 seem to come to mind but hopefully the pic will help. Might be a good idea to throw a fuse inline on the+12v from battery wire.
In my very crude diagram, it won't matter where you get the +12v (splice main power and coil power together so simplify and save wire (+12v and bat +12v)). I'd run a wire from the battery (or whatever voltage dispersion device you choose to use) to the relay (with a fuse, of course. 20amps sounds reasonable)

The switch is a switch you install on the dash or wherever, the ground (-12v) is any good chassis ground that references the battery. You don't even need the switch if you don't care if the lights are always on when the highs are on. Thats how my truck was wired before my headlight upgrade.

I think his thing is he wants his lights to come on with the aid of the headlight switch. He doesn't want an additional switch.

I have my Hella 500s wired up to turn on with my highbeams via relay. If you haven't figured it out lemme know and I can probably swing by and help you out.
