My dipstick doesn't even have a full line, just 2 holes. Is there supposed to be an actual line?

My dealer has twice now filled mine about 3/8 over the top hole.
I'm really worried. I've never had a car consume that much oil in that short a time. I don't think I want a brand new car that requires +/- $10/quart "top offs" with fillups at the gas station. That reminds me of my moms old Granada back in the day... And the pinto battery under the hood doesn't quite look like it belongs, or does it??? |

It could be that the ring hasnt seated just yet. Maybe it takes a little time if your running it at low rpms.

Its not like I granny-drive the thing.
If the rings aren't seated at 7200+ miles, I don't want the damned thing. Everythings been fine. Consumption started in the lasat 1000. That is if it is in fact consuming oil. |

Add me to the list, 4781 miles on the car, going 70 mph on a level highway my light came on. I pulled over, waited 10 mins, checked the oil and it was slightly below full.
Started back up, and it shut off after about 10 miles, I'm bringing it to the dealer tomorrow to at least get it on the books. |

Aside and maybe helpful: Did anyone see the odd TSB about them changing the oil meter? Really odd and can't remember the exact wording. It made it seem like they were referring to the dipstick. Check out the tech website and tell us what you think... |

Sucks, buto be honest I'm kinda relieved I'm not the only one with this PROBLEM.
If you call SOA, ask for Desire' and tell her your buddy charlie's car does the same thing. That way they can't truthfully say "no one ese has reported this". |

Yeah. My dipstick only was about 1/8" below the last time I'd checked it.
My dealer is the one saying my car consumed 3/4 or so of a quart in 3000 miles. They added some oil and now my level on the dipsatick is about 3/8 or 1/2" above the top indicator hole. |

Its so tough to say when you didnt check the level right after the oil change. It could have been like that from the start. Which means you're not burning oil and there is another issue. Which might be sensor related. |

79,
when they changed your oil, did they put on the correct filter? |

02-127-12 Bulletin Description: The purpose of this bulletin is to inform you of a change made to the oil level gauge and guide. On a rare occasion, there is a possibility that the oil level gauge could get damaged if too much force is applied when installing or removing it. As a result, the diameter of the oil level gauge was increased along with the inside diameter of the oil level guide (dip stick tube). http://techinfo.subaru.com/search/listResults.html |

not sure what it means as it suggests perhaps some change was made between perhaps different production cars. but i'm not sure what to make of this. IMHO, the problem is not lack of oil, but either a bad sensor or the pressure is somehow off. i have never had a car where the dipstick isn't correct. that wouldn't make sense at all, IMHO. and even if the car is down 3/4 qt, it seems a bit overkill to warn the driver at that level. the car should function just fine with 3/4 qt down, or even significantly more. (i'm not endorsing this, just saying...) |

I'm curious on this as well. Edmunds Forum had a posting on this a couple months ago?? Seems the shop put a filter on for a Forester. The implied difference being the wrong filter type might allow the oil to drain back out of the filter. |

from what i understand, the Forester can use it's "old filter" (*130) and the impreza's newer filter (*160). the impreza 2.0i can only use the *160 model.

From everything I've read over the last 25 years, if you don't get the rings seated very early in the life of the engine, they don't ever seat, and you burn oil for the life of the engine.

again, i'm not an expert, but i don't think he's low on oil at all (i have no clue how the dealer says he is 3/4 qt down unless they drained the whole system 79: did they drain your pan to find that you really were down 3/4 qts?)\ i daresay they are just guessing. ) i know some cars "go over" the high mark dot when using the recommended capacity. so, i'm speculating (and that's all it is) that they are looking at the dipstick, seeing that it is below the high oil dot, and saying that he's short and 3/4 qt brings the mark up to where it would be if you changed your oil and added the 5.3 qts. i always have used the high dot as a good indicator in all of my cars. i haven't changed my oil yet, but i'm guessing and hoping that 5 qts (a nice convenient amount considering i can buy that in one container) should bring me beyond the half way point between the two dots and be good enough. we'll see. |

Its the proper "160" filter.
And auskiPro- I already stated that I did check the oil level after they changed it. It was way above full aso I took it back and they reduced the level to the top indicator mark. I find this whole situation to be quite unacceptable. Rings have seated on every other car I've ever owned. It ran great since new, got better than epa mpg's right away. I followed subarus break in advice. The problem, whatever it is, is new as I check all my fluids very regularly. |
