Default 5mt shift knob to 6mt stalk adapt

searched and didn't find so....

made a 6mt to 5mt shift knob stalk adapt for $11. here's how...

+ buy a 1/2" flare plug, $3 and change at loews. This threads perfectly and firmly into your 5mt shift knob. Also brass is easy to tap.

+ while there get a nut 12x1.25 to counter tighten against the flare plug, maybe $2

+ buy a 12x1.25 tap, $6 and change at Northern Tool. Sets at sears and northern tool do not have this size tap.

+ drill a larger pilot hole through the flare plug and at same time all the way through the plug end, sez use 27/64" drill, I bought a 7/16" and worked great.

+ thread the flare plug hole with the tap.

+ tighten flare plug into your shift knob...I placed knob in vise with protection on each side and made really tight.

+ thread counter nut then shifter onto shift stalk. tighten.

+ I zip tied my shift boot right below the shift knob to hide the brass and counter nut

+ reverse lockout ring works well from inside the boot.

Would it be possible for you to machine my momo (05-09 legacy 5 speed)shift knob to fit the 6 speed transmission and reverse lock out?

TIA,
Anthony

besides the thread pattern number referenced in the original post, are there any other fitment metrics to worry about?

I ask because I would like to use a shift knob I had in a previous car (sold it when i sold the car, i should have held onto it).

http://www.carmate-usa.com/html_razo...shift_m_gt.htm

Can anyone provide some insight on whether or not this kind of RAZO will fit in m 2013 WRX?

Also, any guidance on how to lower the shift knob height? The STi short throw kit was in the car when i got it, but i'd like the height of the knob reduced if possible. (I have a feeling this answer may be in a different post but I havent been able to find the info via search)

I have the titanium sphere knob, and it significantly lowers the height, just by sitting lower.

It is also *significantly* more solid than the stocker STI knob on the factory 5sp short shifter, since there's no acryllic(?) insert like the stocker.

I'm not sure what variation Chris does on shallow/deep drilling the Ti spheres, maybe he'll comment.

Both feel and shifting effort are increased by this setup.

From my experience, A polymer sphere with a decent balanced weight and make all the difference compared to a stock knob.

Default Do the 2004-2007 STI shift knobs fit the 2008 up models

Hey just got a 2012 STI and wanted to know if the 04-07 knobs fit the 2012 model. I assumed they were the same but when I called Cobb tunning they said they have a different part number for the 07 compared to the 2012. I had a few knobs when I had my 05 and 06 STI and was hoping to get one of those again. Thx

Wow these are nice. If I do the 5mt swap like I want i'll pretty much surely be buying one in the near future. I like them a lot, and they look extremely well crafted.

So are you saying that the 06-07 sti knob is 180g compared to the 04-05 sti knob being 69 grams?

They do share the same thread, but other factors are involved with fitment like clearance and shift boot issues so those would have to be checked out before you spend money on something from a different car, so reasearch first! Good luck.
I don't suppose you would be willing to tell me your process of getting the stainless to get that burnt charcoal look and how you get it uniform like you do. I made a custom knob that once I am allowed to post pics I will.

Excellent write up, agreed that the metal knobs get way too hot in the summers.

Since this thread has been bumped up from the dead, I will add the weight of my red 6mt shift knob. It's 198g, just over 7 oz. The number area is red, bought it from an online seller and it's supposedly oem. It seems well made. It's noticeably heavier than my 2011 wrx 5mt knob and super heavy compared to my 99 2.5rs 5mt knob.

Default OFFICIAL Ultimate Shift Knob Thread + TESTING RESULTS!

Am I the only one who finds it funny that the standard subaru manual shifter thread pitch is the exact same thread pitch as our wheel studs?

Sorry for the dusty bump. I wanna try converting a beer tap to a shift knob so I needed to know the pitch lol

Now considering the reach from the driver seat, having a tall shift knob is almost necessary I think. These look great. Cool designs!
