After talking with the mechanic and the vendor, it seems that from the previous 6 items I posted, these 3 are likely the cause:
Whiteline Rear Diff Positive Power Kit Bushings Whiteline Rear Diff Positive Power Kit Inserts STi Transmission Mount So although my symptoms are similar, I think the cause of my whine is due to the new parts being installed. The shop will be putting it up on a lift tomorrow to see/hear the issue. |

Narrowed it down to the STi Transmission mount .... most likely, since the whine is coming from up front.
I don't hear it much around town but only on/at highway speeds. But since this is also our 'road trip' car it is probably best to go back to the stock WRX T-mount (sometime before T-Day). |

Does your whine increase in pitch the faster you go?

I'm also curious if this could have anything to do with the timing belt, belts, tensioners???

I have a 2014 WRX Sedan....I was involved in an accident early november where a kid backed his 95 F-150 right into my front bumper. Long story short I had the whole front end replaced at no charge to me I picked it up around 3pm one day and as soon as I go to acclerate in first I hear the turbo spool up and this whine noise (Really high pitch) not sure what to make of it? I do not have any mods done to the car and it happens usually at first drive in almost every gear. I have 22k on my car....I'm just as confused because I've never heard the noise before. My first guess is maybe the cold? i recently moved to PA.

Sort of. I can start hearing it about 60 mph in 5th gear. As I step on the gas some more, the whine goes up in pitch and volume ever so slightly. It is subtle though. Been up to 70 mph and it is still whining.
To recap, I heard the whine after I had these parts installed: Whiteline Gearbox Positive Shift Kit Whiteline Rear Diff Positive Power Kit Bushings Whiteline Rear Diff Positive Power Kit Inserts STi Transmission Mount TiC 5MT Lever Pivot Bushings TiC Shift Linkage Bushings Un-installed the STi mount but it made no change in the whine noise. Next, removed the Positive Shift Kit - still no change in whine noise - but I did hear a squishy noise during fast shifting - due to the soft stock parts (eliptical inserts just below the trans mount). So I suspect it *may* be the rear diff parts causing something up front to whine. May be. But those parts are a little more work to pop in and out ... so I won't bother. I may be looking to upgrade the audio system. Aside note: Really miss the great feel of the STi mount and pos shift kit. So I put both items back on the car. If one had to choose between these two items - go with the positive shift kit! IMO. |

I believe the whine noise in my car is due to the upgraded components that were installed. I have learned to live with the noise as over time your brain gets accustomed to it (and turning up the stereo). The added NVH is worth the upgrade to me.
Now some other folks may not have upgraded parts but hear a similar whine _ I really cannot comment much on that other than it may be the rear diff and/or shifting tranny. Not sure. |

so no new update..I did however install a cobb short shifter..feels awesome definitely amplifies the whine in 5th..and adds some other NVH..but had time to listen to the whine with the boot and padding all out..had a theory maybe its the bushing underneath but idk..I'm just guessing at this point

I had the same problem in my '07 WRX. It happened when the car was four years old with about 48k miles on it. I can't figure out how to paste the picture of my invoice so I will type it all out.
Corrected by 323001: (KUL04) transaxle assy complete r&r Corrected by 322226: Transfer driven gear and or bearing Installed 806322050: roller bearing Installed SOA635006: silicone sealer Installed SOA635001: Gear oil Check noise over 40mph, road test for noise, noise in transmission, r & r, disassemble & inspect transmission, found transfer driven gear bearing & race (transfer case side) worn, replace bearing & race I haven't heard the noise since, and it was all covered under warranty. Made me glad I bought the extended warranty. |

hi,
I'm a french owner of a 2005 wrx (bug eyes) and mine is doing exactly the same noise. Anything new about it ? Bluerose 353, i don't think it's a transfer case bearing issue,as lillukas had them changed under warranty it's exactly the same noise you can hear in this video : |

I have this same noise in my 2012 WRX. For me it's only audible in 5th gear, though I am going to try really hard to hear it in 4th as well. One thing that I find really interesting about it is that the noise very briefly gets louder when i lift off the throttle. If nothing else it confirms that it's load-related, which makes sense since it's obviously in the drivetrain. The way I discovered that it was in the drivetrain was by holding up a cardboard tube to my ear while driving down the highway. The noise is significantly louder when the cardboard tube is pointed directly at the shifter.
I'm trying to think of clever ways to narrow down the source. It only seems to happen under load, so I doubt I'll be able to put it up on jack stands and hear it happening. Has anyone ever attempted to use some kind of sound recording device taped to a rear differential while driving at highway speeds? If the noise were obviously louder when taped to the rear diff vs, say, the center diff, that would be very revealing. If I ever get this resolved I'll report back with my findings. If I _don't_ get this resolved, I'll have to sell the car. It's just far too annoying. |

Hi guys,
Anyone have any luck with this? My 2005 wrx has this same exact whine in 5th gear. Sound disappears when I'm off the throttle and comes back on when i apply gas. The high pitch whine is driving me crazy whenever i try to drive in 5th gear!! |

whirling Noise from shifter area
First time posting long time reader. I'm having a really strange issue that I think is similar to the topic here. 08 WRX with around 160k, original motor and transmission. When the car is rolling and I move (or really even touch) the shifter I hear this almost whining or whirling sound similar to the sound of a bad barring. Get some noise when in gear driving mainly in 5th as well but nothing compared to the sound I get moving the shifter back and forth. It doesn't affect how the car drives for the most part besides the sound and from time to time it takes a couple times to put in reverse after extended driving. I am leaking gear oil as well so I was thinking it was the transmission. I took it to Subaru and was told my transmission is in need of replacement and it would cost more to rebuild then the price of a quality used one. However when I asked they couldn't tell me what the actual issue was or even a guess of the issue just that it's "broken". Seems like a stretch based on the fact that I daily the car and never have had problems shifting gears or anything, just the sound stresses me out. I was told that they have never seen something quite like this and they quoted me nearly $4500 to install a new-used one as well as a new clutch kit. I guess my question is has anyone had a similar issue like the one I'm having? Any input would be really helpful! Thanks! Also, I took a video but I can't figure out how to upload it lol

I'm getting the 5th gear whine (with accelerator pressure only) also. MY04 WRX 5MT Ancient Cobb Accessport Stage 2 About 240K miles, original clutch Only 5th whines; it only whines when pressure (mere grams, or more) is applied to accelerator. As soon as foot lifts from accelerator pedal, whine ceases. Road speed doesn't affect presence/absence of whine, only pedal pressure. No whine in 1-4. It's been doing it for last 25K miles or so. May have gradually increased, but only slightly. Anyone come up with anything? |
