to answer your PM questions:
1) The wiring plugs are different because the sti has 2 more wires for the dccd resulting in a 6pin plug vs the wrxs 4pin. if you are looking at the female plug on the tranny the 2 pins on the right side are for the dccd the other 4 are in the same order. I had the male sti plug so i just wired that into my wrx's harness so it was easy. You can drive the tranny without it plugged in, you will just get a CEL because there is no communication but you'll be fine. Just get it wired up sometime.

2) The tranny is a tight fit but it fits no problem because the sti and wrx bodys are the same and the tranny hump is the same size.

3) It is easy to put a jack on the tranny without the crossmember on but then you can't secure it first and then let down the jack once you have it in place. The crossmember is kinda in the way of the balancing point of the tranny which makes it a pain. I would say it would be best to do it with the crossmember on, but you can do it with it off if you have a someone strong friend that is willing to lay under there and hold up the end of the tranny after its fitted to the motor.

Oh and don't forget to put in the 6mt clutch fork before its too late. and if it looks lined up and doesnt want to slide on, slide in the driveshaft and put it in the end and twist to line up the splines. and before its all the way install the shifter linkage otherwise you cant. Good luck!

noob here on STi transmission and trying to digest all the info i've found in this forum. thinking of swapping a STi trans into my 06 WRX. a few qns:
1. which year and make (JDM/USDM/EDM) of STi trans is considered the strongest?
2. which year and make would be best for daily driving?
3. which year and make would be best for track?
4. is worthwhile to do STi trans without the DCCD? would it be a day and night difference without the DCCD?

definitely stay away from 04-05 USDM 6spds, apparently 5th gear synchro failure is pretty common. my 05 6spd has a grinding 5th gear that pisses me off.

06 got carbon coned synchro's for IIRC 5th and 6th gear synchro's so they dont have that issue anymore. 07 6spd has a longer 4th gear to reduce the gap that existed between 4th and 5th gear on the 04-05 tranny's, which some thought to be the cause of common pre-mature 5th gear synchro failure.

JDM 6th gear is real short and your rpm on the highway will be pretty high. on the track though the shorter 5th and 6th would help you in acceleration...so it's your call.

i've been driving without DCCD on my 6spd but i've never driven it with DCCD so i can't comment on that one...good luck.

Question on the driveshaft and diff yoke. If I am using an STI driveshaft and an R180 can I reuse the bolts from my 5MT that hold the two together, are they the same as the STI?

From what I recall you can... the main thing I've seen that isn't noted is that the wrx flywheel has 6 bolts the sti has 9, so if you're switching clutches you need a few extra bolts from the dealer

I'm not referring to the bolts for the flywheel, the bolts that hold the driveshaft to rear diff yoke.

Can you re-use the 5MT crossmember on the 6-speed? Is the 6-speed crossmember the same as the 5MT one?

sorry guys i was gone for spring break for a week so now i can respond. heres responses in order...

- i drove around for a while without a DCCD and my brother has been for probably 6 months now. I have Spiider's controller and just driving around the difference is not apparent at all but without one there is more rear biased so you can definitely get the rear to slide out easier. That also means less lifespan of your R160 with more power going to the rear (that is if you are keeping the R160).

-Just to clear up the flywheel comment, i talked about that in post #24. yes u need 3 more bolts if u are using an sti flywheel, clutch and pressure plate.

-yes you can use the wrx driveshaft bolts no problem.

-yes the crossmembers are interchangeable. the sti one might be a little stronger though because it is boxed instead of just one piece but i know for a fact that you can use the 5MT crossmember.

Are there any specific shops that offer this swap and have a good reputation for getting it right? I don't have the time/space/desire to do this myself and would love to hear from people who have had a shop do the swap for them to see if they were satisfied.

Thanks!

I am confused too. I am looking into doing a 6mt swap from an 06 sti to 06 wrx. Not exatly sure what I need on top of the tranny either. From my understanding I need:
06 Sti rear diff, clutch, flywheel, axles to do this swap, drive shaft.

What is the ring and pinion thing?

One more question: Swapping a 2004 STI 6-speed into a 2002 WRX, will the front female STI axles slide right into my front hubs with no issues or are they a different spline count or larger?

I bought an 04 sti six speed. Hasnt arrived yet, but I have an 07 WRX. My list of parts needed for the install

Trans
Axles(if it does have the stubs)
Driveshaft from automatic, or modify sti
3.9 r&p
6mt shift linkage
I've read that I dont need the crossmember/tranny mount because they are the same.
Spiider DCCD Contr.

All sound right?

Also , if you already have an STI driveshaft and your using the WRX R160 you can get a STI companion flange to bolt onto your R160 and the STI driveshaft will bolt up to it with out having to drill out anything. Seems like a stronger option than using the auto driveshaft.

Still shopping for a Subaru but I don't feel like I should be looking into an STI if this swap comes out cheaper using a 2005-2006 WRX

trust me...an STi is WAY worth it. the only thing i would possibly do instead of an sti if i was to do it again would be to buy a totalled sti and swap all the parts into a GC

Exactly which wiring do I need to swap over from my 02 WRX 5-speed to my late model 2004 STI 6-speed? I tried to plug my 5-speed speedo sensor harness into the 6-speed speedo sensor and it will not work, do I need to swap my 5-speed sensor over? What about the harness from the 2 round plugs off the 5-speed, do I just plug that harness into the round plugs on the 6-speed? Please help.

Ok... but what exactly has to be drilled to use the STi DS??? haven't seen this explained in much detail.....

...and where do you get this flange?

You buy the STI companion flange from your dealer or subaru genuine parts dot com from the OEM catalog. You take the WRX companion flange off your R160 and replace the seal, then you put on the STI flange on your WRX R160 diff (fits perfect) and you wont have to drill anything. Also replace the side seals on your diff while your at it. This is what I did and it worked perfectly and in my opinion is the only logical option if you want to use the STI driveshaft in your swap. I love my 6 speed best mod by a mile so far.
