Anyone ever tried this on a later model car? I have an '11 Outback sport and would like to drop in the STI engine when mine gives up.

Mostly my son, and I, just swapped a complete 05 STi (engine, trans, rear diff, suspension, brakes, full harness, etc) into a 02 WRX. Basically he has a 05 STi in a 02 WRX hatch.
I mean like everything except headliner and front door harnesses.

Bolting it in is one thing, getting some electrics to work is another. We had to swap some wires and bits from STi fuel tank to WRX tank, swap wiper motor, plus everything else listed.

A 2011 is a totally different animal than an 05.

A 2011 won't just bolt in. Basically the suspension is totally different, so you won't be able to use knuckles, control arms, the rear brembos, or the axles, etc.

The pure drivetrain stuff should work with minimal complications. Transmission, rear diff. Need a DCCD controller and a wheel speed sensor to drive your cluster. (MapDCCD or DCCDpro can provide both) Then you'll have to find some GD chassis axles and knuckles

The engine is going to be a struggle to get to work correctly as there's no way to run dual AVCS off the 02 ECU and the wiring isn't exactly plug and play. Also the 2011 is CANBUS so EVERYTHING is run through the ECU.

You could potentially swap to your drive by cable intake and run the engine off of the 02 ECU without AVCS, but I'm not sure if that's possible will dual AVCS cars.

your better off locating an early 04 STI for the easiest swap. The front hubs are the same, the rear hubs will need to be changed due to different splines for the R180 diff. Be sure to get the crossmember for the 6 speed. Wiring wasn't bad at all. You don't have to change the ABS or ECU and cruise and ABS still work, no abs or check engine light. You might get a p1596 if you are going from a 4eat to 6 speed and keep your 4eat ecu, but does not cause issues. I used the 4eat harness for a lot of my connections, Iwire has a nice plug harness kit for this swap, I only purchased a 3 wire VSS harness to tap into the 4eat 4 wire VSS as the STI is a 3 wire VSS set up. I do have the DCCD switches and module but decided not to install it as it is more involved and costly if you wanted the factory STI setup which means you would need the complete harness and STI cluster and ECU. I would go with DCCDPro in the future that make a nice setup and can use the sti thumbwheel and switch. Without DCCD installed, you will have a 35%F-65%R ratio. I would also suggest buying new switches such as reverse light switch on the tranny as its easier to replace while the tranny is out of the car, in the event the original is faulty, realizing after you installed everything and back out of the garage and reverse lights don't work. I suggest the same with the switches on the clutch pedal assembly as it is a PITA to do when pedals are already installed. We just got done with the swap in my sons car that had a 4eat and WOW night and day difference in performance to say the least! Not to mention him having fun driving a 6 speed vs auto! Good Luck!

Now I'm not sure how active this thread is anymore, but I've run into some issues on my 6-speed swap. I've got a 2012 wrx widebody with the "V8 jdmi sti" transmission, r180, and driveshaft. The issue I have run into is the axels and driveshaft are too short to fit into my wrx hubs. The driveshaft is also to short to fit my question is what are my options moving forward for the axels and driveshaft?

Default 2007 STI Driveline Components into a 2002 WRX Wagon

I am restoring a 2002 Impreza Wrx Wagon. I have the cars drive line (5mt) and suspension stripped off to complete some metal work and painting. I would like to upgrade the suspension and drive line when I put everything back together. I have an opportunity to obtain the drive line (6mt) and suspension from a 2007 Impreza STI. From what I read here, it looks like the swap will work as long as I use all the STI components. Has anyone completed a swap as such? Am I correct? Will the components work? Thanks!

Default Help with 07' Forester XT manual swap

Hello guys, I really need some advice.

I'm planning to make an AT to MT swap into my forester XT 07', which appeared to be a canbus vehicle. I was sure that it is not when I was purchasing the swap kit but now it seems that I will have a bunch of wiring problems because of the canbus.

I've read the entire forum and have seem all the manuals on how to do the wiring, but they all talk about pre 07' foresters. I'm trying to find an answer if I could do the same swap and just modify my wiring, eg. put ECU into manual, wire VSS, neutral and reverse lights and be done with it for a while? Or like Tuned200 from subaruforester forum I will have to swap the entire harness, ECU and ABS from similar forester just to make it run because of canbus?

I tried asking many people on the forums but I never got a reply, because these swaps were done 5-7 years ago and they are not active on the forum anymore and probably never seen my messages.

I'm a bit frustrated right now, I have a swap kit, I'm ready to start working but I worry that after a swap the car won't be drivable, which is a big problem because it is my daily.

Eventually I'm planning to do a harness swap to make sure that all the systems are working properly, but now I just cannot find such car donor at the moment.

Thank you very much in advance, I really hope to hear some advices.

I'd wait until you ha e the full harness from a manual forester of the same year. Doing these swaps on a 16bit ECU was fairly simple. But the 32bit ECUs are much more difficult if you don't have all the correct parts. I don't think your AT ECU will be able to recognize the MT at all and probably won't start as a result.

It's a stickied thread which is always alive. But since his questions are AT to MT swap I would agree a new thread would be better. Though maybe someday someone should create a AT to MT swap sticky since so many people do it these days.

There are constantly new posts in stickies threads that sit there for ages.

With a specific question like this I feel a new post is warranted.

AT to MT sticky would be helpful indeed.

Thank you guys for the replies! I cannot create a separate post according to the rules.

I was able to buy 2007 MT ECU of ebay, however I cannot find harness from MT 2007 car so far.
Am I right that 05+ foresters have 32 bit ECU?
