I just want to verifiy, the R160 came in all Imprezas and WRXs, and the R180 came in all STis? JDM and USDM?

Awesome post and awesome 818 in the background of the 1st pic! Kind of a noob question here... but how did you get the rear diff out of its casing?
I am currently doing a diff swap on my 96 legacy gt, I believe its an R160. The diff is off the car, I have the rear cover and side bearing retainers off, but I cant seem to wiggle the diff out! I thought I had to pull off the side bearings off the actual diff to slide it out of the housing, but you have bearings on all your rear diffs! This is my first time doing diff work and it is driving me nuts!!! Do i just yank it out of there or am I missing something?

Not sure if this is the right spot but pretty sure it is. But my front diff seems to be slowly leaking and I checked the levels and it's barely covering the L on the dipstick and I was wondering if this little leak is a common problem and just needs a little bolt snugging or what and also what kind of gear oil should I use? 2007 wrx 5 speed btw. Thank you!

Question for the diff experts:

Has anyone seen or heard any info on a front 1-way LSD for a 6MT 2016 WRX? Stage 2 with flex fuel ate mine on the track a week ago and I can't find any info on it.

Any help is much appreciated!!

How does the car handle/behave between the AP suretrac, Torsen, and clutch style diff? Basically, if i have a Torsen, is there a good reason for me to switch to suretrac or clutch type?

So is this a simple bolt in for 2015+ WRX? I have never seen the various splines to know if it is compatible or not. Also, is this a legit suretrac, or vlsd? How do I know?
Thanks!

What are the TBD (torque biasing) options for 5MT? Can you please also tell which one uses male and which one uses female axles? Thanks everyone!

And another question: Can a 6MT diff fit into a 5MT?

Can someone confirm if there is a difference between the axle/splines of an 03 JDM R180 and an 05 USDM R180?

I would like to add that since buying a 6MT with a suretrac front, I have done research on how it worked exactly other then 'some magic happens'.

Here's the document that put it all together for me:
http://www.lezo.hu/szerkezettan/hajt...fferencial.pdf

For anyone else that would like to understand how their suretrac LSD works.

This is a fantastic thread, thank you for posting all the pictures and info!
What years/models were the version 1 and 2 VLSD found in?
I have broken two sets of spiders gears in R160 open diffs now and like the idea of the four idlers in the V1 VLSD. I have never seen rear axles with the double spline though, was that ever sold in the US?

Here is my problem i hope someone can answer it.

Will mismatching a transmission (from a stock 2005 wrx) and a rear differential (from a stock 2002 impreza) work? or, would it be a catastrophic disaster?

Reason i am asking, is because i had this set up, car drove fine, but then the transmission died 3 days after the full swap with exception of the rear differential because i though, and im puzzled.

Symptoms,

while driving i heard a noise and it sounded like a bad wheel bearing, then the car would shake then stop shaking and then back to normal, noise stayed.

2 nights ago the car stalled on me on the freeway on my way home. i first thought it was the clutch because i had just put a new one on it. took the car home, removed the engine and everything looked good.

The shaft from transmission turns but it will not go into any gear.

Did i shoot myself on the foot by not swapping the rear diff?

looking forward to your reply.

Thanks,
Julio

Hello Julio,
I am new to Subarus and I am sure some of the smarter guys on here will correct me if I am wrong but if the new transmission is JDM then the gears are different and you would have had to also change the rear diff. If not it might make your center diff work to hard and it might lock up. When that happens it will cause stress on the transmission. My son 05 WRX had the center diff lock up and then it caused a bearing in the transmission lock lock up. Right now I have the transmission apart and I am trying to figure out what gears to use to make sure I don't have that problem.

Dear Julio,

My experience is with manual transmissions:

The front differential has a final drive ratio, eg. 3.7, 3.9, 4.11, 4.44. The transfer case (which is the rear part of the transmission and contains the center differential) has a trasfer ratio which could be 1 or 1.1. The rear differential also has a final drive ratio. The front final drive ratio has to be equal with the rear final drive ratio multiplied by the transfer ratio.

Example: 4.11 = 4.11 x 1. Another example: 3.9 = 3.54 x 1.1

Subaru has viscous center differentials which tries to match the rotational speed of the front axle with the one of the rear axle. They do that by means of friction which generates heat. In case your transmission had a mismatch between the front final drive and the rear final drive multiplied with the transfer ratio, your center diff worked hard to oppose that difference in rotational speed and heated up very much - maybe to the point of seasing.

I am sorry for your trouble.

You can check the final drive ratios and transfer ratio in a document like: https://www.rallispec.com/downloads/...art_Public.pdf

Question Differential Spline Profile

Thanks for the info on diffs. I am building a Lotus 7 style roadster with Suby rear diff, axles, hubs and brakes. I purchased a diff online that I was told was from a 2005 JDM Legacy Outback Turbo. It was said to be a 3.27 LSD, perfect for what I need. It appears to be a LSD, the ratio I have not confirmed. I had already bought 2009 Outback CV's as they were the correct length (30.5") for my build. The spline count on both the diff and the axles is the same at 25, however, the spline profile is different. The axles have V shaped groves with flattened peaks, whereas the diff has V shaped groves and sharp peaks. The diameter appears the same, but the spline profile is different and the axles will not fit the diff splines. I can return the axles, but I need to know what to get that will fit. Has anyone got an idea? Alternately, I can swap spider gears, but a comparable axle is easier. Any help, knowledge, or even a friggin good guess would be appreciated.

Do you know if there is there is a Subaru factory R160 clutch LSD that uses the symmetrical axles instead of the bolt in stubs? I thought there might be some of those available but never able to confirm true or false.

* - hmm maybe these exist after all?

You read my mind!!!! Everything you just said I was about to reply! Wth LoL I’m tripping out. This is good stuff man
