So to update..many thanks and props to wrxsubaruwrx..we found a leak in the turbo inlet hose yesterday..this morning I was able to get another look and noticed a tear in the hose about a half inch long..likely due to over tightening which could have been my fault, or not..I can't be sure..is this the cause of the whine? I can't tell for sure until a new one is put on but its definitely a good chance and either way needs to be fixed..will try to get subaru to put a new one on..I hear these are a bear to do myself if I'm putting a stock one on..easier with an aftermarket..annoyingly yesterday I also went to another subaru dealership to have them diagnosis it..they told me its normal turbo noise..(while the previous told me it was normal gear wearing noise)..I asked him if it could be a leak in the turbo inlet(this was before wrxsubaruwrx and I found the leak)..the tech said no..so thats where I'm at so far..

I've got the same noise under pretty much the same conditions. It does not appear to be tied to RPM or throttle but more so speed; I was on the highway going about 70 in 5th and I threw it in neutral but was still hearing it as it got quieter with my decreasing speed. It happens in 4th and 5th gear in my 14 WRX (about 17,800) as well. It's much quieter in 4th than in 5th- you really need to focus to hear it in 4th. I plan on bringing it into the dealership to go for a ride along so that I can show them what's up.

Once I do I'll let you know what they say.

For me.. 2014 sedan with 21k.. It only whines in 5th and the sound increases with speed like you mentioned. My 22k service is right around the corner.. I too will update with what dealer says.

My car does this mostly in 1st and 2nd gear. No clue what it's from....but I can only hear it with the windows up and the radio off with stock exhaust.

So far it isn't loud enough to actually bother me.

I'm sure they will throw the "it's normal" at you. Remember one dealer told me it was normal gear wear. Another told me it was normal turbo noise. Ummm ok.

Well, it started as "that might be normal" haha. I went for a ride along with one of their technicians who couldn't really hear it initially. I did it again and he was able to hear it, however he said it was so faint that if he was driving a customers car himself, he'd probably have dismissed it. He couldn't localize it while driving so he took it into the shop and he got under it while someone else drove it. It turns out he was able to hear an abnormal noise coming from the rear differential. So I have another appointment Wednesday for them to pull the diff apart and take a peek. There are supposedly 4 or so bearings back there that could be causing the noise so they're going to replace them all and see if that resolves the noise.

The long and short of it is that I brought it in really early, before the damage (to whatever is making the noise) got bad enough that you'd REALLY notice a noise. I'm very grateful they threw it up on a lift and took a listen because otherwise, I would have been told to bring it back when the noise got louder and it was more easily locatable. So hopefully the rear diff is the issue and once they're done, the noise will be gone and nothing else will happen.

Wow great. I'll be curious to see which bearings they replace and compare them to the ones I got replaced. I'm glad they heard it tho and are working on it.

I had a snout bearing go on my r160.

sounded like a transfer case issue due to sound conduction through the driveshaft.

replaced entire diff with a used one I found for $50

Lukas's "whine" is hardly a whine. It is absolutely nothing to be concerned with and 100% not drivetrain related. His noise is a very faint turbo spool sound or possibly a small boost leak somewhere. The tear was so bad in his inlet that we couldn't fully test it.

Got car back from dealer, they basically said that the whine I'm hearing in 5th gear is typical sound in these wrx and sti's. At least I have it documented.. Maybe I can get a 2nd opinion at another dealership?

Same noise in my '14 with 18,000. Should I make an appointment? It is really annoying and I can't imagine it's normal at all.

I don't think it's turbo spool like wrxsubaruwrx said. It starts well low in 5th gear. 45mph on and never goes away no matter how fast you go. And it's only in 5th gear. Part of me thinks it is a boost leak. Just can't find where. Yes it annoys the crap out of me like it does you omgjacki.

Second opinion isn't a bad idea. My dealer initially said it sounded normal until he got it up on a lift and listened to it while someone was driving it up in the air. Maybe take it somewhere else and see if they're willing to do the same?

They needed an extra day with mine (14 WRX with 19500) so hopefully replacing the bearings in the rear diff will remedy it. As soon as I pick her up (hopefully tomorrow) I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I'm not saying it's your turbo, I'm trying to describe the sound itself. If you had heard my rear diff before it let go, you would know what a "whine" sounds like. HA! You're welcome to cruise up again if you would like to try to leak test again, now that the inlet is repaired.
