Howling noise - speed dependent - not rpm / gear
I have an 04 STI and have recently been noticing a 'whining sound'.
The sound can best be described by me as a howling sound and is best heard when I am driving 40+ mph, pop the car into neutral so my engine is 'quite', and it is most audible here. As the speed increases, so does the noise. It sounds like a very distinct whining. -- I can hear it best at this time because my car is LOUD (solid motor mounts, big turbo, shifter bushings, and full exhaust) Sound like it is coming from the rear diff (I removed back seats to get a better listen) So I am seeing mixed things online regarding if the sound would disappear when there is load / in gear / etc... Since the sound is present regardless of gear / load, this leads me to believe it is not in the transmission and is something that is constantly spinning... ** Also noticed that my rear diff bearing holder that has the 5 bolts through it where the axle goes thru, has a bolt sheared off and has a small leak. Going to change the diff fluid this week and have it parked until then. Please weight in and let me know your thoughts

Sounds like some bearing are going out. Maybe around the center diff. I would have a quality shop look at it.

Could be a wheel bearing. Swerve the car left and right and see if the sound increases or decreases with the side load on the wheels.

Tire it could be the wheel bearings. Sometimes they can be difficult to sort out. May require removing the axle and spinning the bearing after the axle is out. It may have run out of grease and started grinding. It may sound like a zipper and have no play in the bearing.
