Aren't a lot of the 6 speed repairs because of that noisy throw out bearing too?

A noisy T/O bearing is not a transmission repair. Transmission repair is an internal gearbox repair. The popcorn moment has just begun - an all new HT CVT is in the Ascent. I am waiting with baited breath since they claim the only difference between a 1000 pound and 5000 pound tow capacity is an external air cooled CVT cooler... |

Hey gents,
I have a 16 WRX limited CVT model as well. Sitting at 33k miles on it. Engine is stock, aftermarket cat back exhaust, and some enkei wheels. I am unfortunately on my 2nd replacement transmission, 3rd overall for the vehicle (counting the one that came with the vehicle). I just put my winter wheels on and guess what? A little transmission fluid leakage again!! |

Was it replaced each time for oil leakage or something else? |

1st replacement was from internal fluid hemorrhaging with no external leaks. 2nd replacement was fluid leak externally. Checked this weekend and ban, more tranny fluid in the garage...

This transmission doesn't have to be fondled correctly to last, but dammit if these flat bills (I like that term. It fits, it's short, and it's to the point) don't simply abuse the crap out of these transmissions. They'd bust even the mighty STI 6MT. |

I've got an early build date bugeye with the "glass" 5 speed (original clutch and no tranny work as far as I know)and the FXT with the HTCVT. Let's see which pops first. I'll flat brim them to death.
I wonder if the reason for there being more broken WRX 6mt's is just that the CVT take rate is so low on those cars and fxt sales were pretty dismal as well. It just seems like so many people on here and in the Facebook groups are having multiple trannys replaced. |

I understand the first replacement for an internal issue but the 2nd and possibly 3rd replacement for external leaks seems like overkill. Especially since Subaru released a TSB for repairing a front cover seal leak (which mine had and was repaired) without replacement. I had some issues with the converter staying locked causing overheating and stalling but hasn’t reoccurred since adding a trans cooler. Please give us an update when you find out what’s leaking. Best of luck. |

Yea man I saw that release regarding seals. Did you add a trans cooler? Or was it added by dealer,?

They told me today that the trans oil pan was leaking and they replaced seal and resealed the oil pan...

I added my own. I used a Hayes cooler that’s similar in design to the Mishimoto (plate and fin?). Less than a $100 and drops the trans temp by 25-30F. I left the stock cooler/warmer inline. |

I wonder if I will have any warranty issues around the transmission if I throw a mishimoto cooler on? |

Heat is definitely a killer. Not sure about the warranty. You’d think SOA would be fine with someone trying to protect the equipment by keeping temps lower. Mine is a rebuilt so no factory warranty anyway. |

i have had my 2016 CVT for just over 2 years, no issues and running beautifully. i am thinking about adding an AWE cat back exhaust to it very soon. all other mods are purely cosmetic at the moment. still under warranty so i have no need or want to go beyond the cat back mech wise.

Always put in trans temp gauge to monitor the temp...basic rule like engine, don't go WOT before warm up. And no need to bypass the heat exchanger (some people called it oem cooler, which isn't a cooler at all...), u would want it to warm up asap. Unless you live in hot climate like arizona.
CVT cooler is an option, not a necessity. I've had the car since 2014, track and daily (Cobb protuned Stage 1+, with nameless I-pipe). The only thing i had to replace was the AC compressor and turbo inlet hose... |

Mine overheated while driving from SLC to Boise in mid-80F weather. Heats a killer and I’d argue they absolutely need a cooler. |

Worked for years as a Subaru tech at the local dealer. Am a Subaru master Tech. I've replaced several WRX/ Turbo Fozzy HT CVT units. Had one that wasn't the car's fault. Customer did their own "oil change" and decided to drain the CVT fluid and then drive it. The others were almost all because of internal failures, and SOA doesn't allow us to rebuild them yet. Had one that completely failed. When I took the pan down, the variator chain came with it.....

This one note in the service schedule is exactly why CVT units will continue fail prematurely.
CVTF inspect every 30k miles. Note#4 Note#4 - When the vehicle is used under severe conditions, replace CVTF every 40,000 km (24,855 miles). |

A lot of people don't realize that they fall under the "severe duty cycle". Me personally, I change fluids/wear parts based on a Severe duty cycle. |

I will make sure to mention the fluid at my next scheduled check up at the dealer to check and or replace if needed. Thanks for heads up.
