Default Does anyone know how to turn off the Auto Start Stop feature?

I'm trying to help my mother out. She bought a brand new 2020 Subaru Outback and the center section by the radio is like one gigantic iPad. Everything is electronic with no knobs at all which isn't my style, but hey, it's not my car.

Anyways, I know how to switch over to one of the 3 bottom settings from the car, home, and personal settings. In the car settings, one of them I can turn off the Auto Start Stop feature which my mother hates, and i've driven the car before and I find it annoying as well, but then again my WRX was a stick, so that would never work on a car like that. Whenever I turn off the feature it stays off, but when I go to the local grocery store for example and lock it up and get back in and start it up and then come to a stop it automatically turns itself back on. I thought if I linked my mother's iPhone to the car and then re-applied my settings it would stick since the key fob is linked to the driver profile, but the Auto Start Stop feature still turns on automatically regardless of which key fob I use.

I figure this applies to anyone with an Outback, Forester, Ascent, or Legacy. I know WRX/STis don't have all this fancy touchscreen only stuff, at least they have some manual knobs lol

It is impossible to permanently disabled, due to fleet fuel economy numbers. Take it up with the EPA or California if you want it changed, we'll all sign the petition.

What is the point of the digital button to turn it on and off for? You mean no matter what I do in the settings, it will automatically just turn itself back on?

If it's like Ford, then every time you turn the car on, you'd have to press the button to disable it. Not familiar with these newer Subarus, but didn't realize they had it as well.

That is what I've read on the other Forums where people have asked the same question.

You need to turn it off every time.

There is no way you are going to be able to permanently shut off that feature. The whole idea is to promote fuel savings by not having the engine running when you are stopped in traffic.

I've read where people have attempted to permanently shut it off by dicking around with the ECU / sensors.

The end result was they shut it off, but created a number of other issues with other systems in the car which are difficult to correct, if at all.

To be a little bit more accurate, it's the fact that an engine not running is not putting emissions into the air. Fuel savings is a nice byproduct of that.


And, no, as stated already, it cannot be permanently turned off. Gotta turn it off with every cycle of the ignition.

Pretend it's an electric car. You stop. Car shuts off. You want to go, you step on the gas and it starts and goes.

Now, I can see where if this were a Jeep Wrangler and you were trying to crawl over boulders and suddenly lose power, that's a problem. But for a street vehicle, just deal with it.

You can modulate the brake pedal to prevent it from activating, if you apply more or less pressure than the system is looking for it will leave the engine on. You can also cancel it at a stop by applying more pedal pressure.

You don't have to wait until you are at a stop. If you forget to cancel it at time of start up, you can cancel Auto Stop / Start at any time while driving.

Just don't look down and crash the car while doing so.

If she has the latest software update (ending with 504) then at least it does make it a two step process instead of a three step process. That update also adds vertical CarPlay as well as fixes some connectivity issues.

No personal experience, but this company has an Autostop Eliminator that will remember the last setting. https://www.autostopeliminator.com/c...top-eliminator
The Forester version has been out for a while and the Outback version is new.

Modulating the brake pedal is for those that don't want to monkey around with the screen. My wife uses the brake method when she drives my car, although I agree that it's very easy to turn it off, especially now that it only takes two presses of the screen.

Understand that touch screens do not work equally well for everybody, so the brake method may be the only way that works reliably for her.

The 'extreme weather' warning screen on our WRX almost never responds to me when I try to cancel it, so I've stopped bothering to try. And I've had touch screens lock up on me mid-word when signing in at a local medical facility, though the admin person could pick up and continue from where I got locked out with no difficulty whatsoever. Those are the recent ones.

It probably involves some body electrical thing, capacitance or resistivity, where the screen's electronics can't handle individual body values that are outside of the expected range(s).
