Default PE1820 spool up - Injen Intake is superior 15 extra hp! Intake test

My car is stuck in maryland . . meanwhile , . . . I am in process of completing the final stages on a 2nd WRX PE 1820 monster car and have discovered quite by accident that the injen intake somehow is able to aid the spool up in this otherwise slow spooling turbo, , , frankly I did not expect much inprovment from an intake upgrade as the black intake tube under the manifold is so restrictive - -

Blitz power meter id - which has shown itself to be remarkably accuraite shows a 15 hp increase over the stock box with the injen and the spool up is 800 rpm lower

I don't even want to comment about what happens when you combine this intake with a straight through exhust and free flow muffler

Lets just say - my old record - 12.74 - will be falling very soon !

By the way - GOD SPEED - Dan has a supply of these and I found him to be a great vendor!

Do you know of any manufacturer that makes a more free flowing tube to bolt up to the turbo housing? I think this would also add to spool up performance.

I would like to use somthing like that in conjunction with the Blitz SUS Power Core filter.

If I can't find anything like this I might go with the injen intake.

Didn't you have the Blitz intake? What was the difference between the blitz and the injen?

STi makes one, and its about $800.00 (that's the cheapest I've seen). The website www.racebreed.com carried it, but the site has been down recently. We are all crossing our fingers in hope that someone else makes one for an affordable price.

I think AEM has one out, haven't seen any pics or heard of anyone that has it. AEM makes good intakes for other cars though.

Mike

AEM does infact have one in the works if not already. On top of that they will have brake rotors, cam gears and the bypass valve.

The AEM one doesn't go up to the turbo housing.

Putting the CAI argument aside and whether it is useful on turbo cars or not, I don't see how the Injen could provide more power than some of the short ram systems. The whole concept behind CAIs are that they give better top end flow because of the better temps being fed at higher speeds, but because they generally have more piping, they are not quite as responsive. Short rams are response oriented, but tend to not give as good flow on the top end. So, whether its a turbo car or N/A, the concept should be the same and it has been tried and tested several times. Also, the Blitz SUS filter I guarantee would give more response on the Injen intake than Injen's own filter because it basically doesn't do much as a good filter!! The SUS is notorious for being known as having poor filtering properties, but very good flow properties in exchange.

I agree with Mike I do not understand how that intake gives that much more HP. I would think on these turbo cars that you would benefit from a shorter intake.

I'm thinking the colder air at this time of year has a lot to do with it...

Regardless, interesting post! Thanks Al!

I dont understand it either - - hence my post - but i just finished to build a WRX identical to mine in every respect and that car is FASTER than mine - only difference injen intake - - with stock air box and K & N filter this WRX spools up 800 rpm higher . . . . so the injen immediately lowers the spool up point where your head snaps back by 800 rpm!

Why it works - i have no clue - but on this car at least it works - I only hope that it works on my car also

PS - I sent the injen off to the dyno tunner to see if they can get a more reliable HP measure on this filter

Think of it this way. It's much easier to suck a liquid through a large straw than it is a narrow straw. That big PE1820 requires a HUGE amount of air, and the stock intake just couldn't provide that air. When you let the turbo get the air it needs, just like allowing it to expel the exhaust it uses without restriction, then it will spool faster, and compress more air for a given amount of exhaust flow.

I rather like the idea of lowering spool up 800rpm! That will put it down to around 3500rpm! Cool stuff.

Hmmm... Maybe I'll have to pick up an Injen if I can find them for less then $200... cause if it'll cost more then $200 then I might as well get the APS, cause then I'm setup to use a front mount...

You should try to slap on an Injen before the dyno tuning, if you can!
