News Subaru WRX Concept Makes NY Debut

WRX Concept Shows Big Changes for 2015 Model
By Ryan Douthit, Subiesport

For more photos and the big picture, see the original article.

What you're looking at here is a Concept version of what could be the next WRX. Not an Impreza WRX, because the car you see here, and going forward, has even less in common with the Impreza than the 2012 model did - though, yes, if you dig down to the basic unibody it is still built on the same core chassis.

If you wanted proof of just how serious Subaru is about performance with this next WRX just look at the roof: It's carbon fiber to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Overall the car is lower, sleeker and wider than even the outgoing widebody model. Like all previous WRX's this new model will feature a turbo-charged boxer engine with a top-mount intercooler. Performance specs aren't yet known, but our guess will be 280-320hp for the WRX (not the STI). But keep in mind, that's only a guess based on rumors.

The colors should seem familiar. A base coat of "World Rally Blue Pearl III" along with trendy fluorescent yellow trim, as a nod to the WRX's World Rally Championship heritage.

The concept also features BBS "RD-D" one-piece forged wheels wrapped in 245/40R20 Dunlop tires with an "exclusive tread pattern" and more of that fluorescent yellow. (You'd almost think Ken Block was still onboard with the Subaru Rally Team given his penchant for neon.)

Looking at what numbers we do have, it is clear this WRX is intent on blazing a new performance trail. The new car loses two-inches of its length (178-inches), is almost four inches wider (74.4-inches), and - get this - the new car drops four inches of stature to 54.7 when compared to the 2012/2013 model. Finally, the wheelbase extends a massive five inches to 108.7. (The 2012 WRX 4-door sedan measured 180.3-inches in length, 70.70-inches in width, 58.1-inches in height with a 103.3-inch wheelbase.)

For more photos and the big picture, see the original article. Subaru also announced a Hybrid XV Crosstrek.

Wait, does this mean my bugeye is now a classic?

I like the look of this new one. It's about time the WRX was a dedicated model, like what they did with the Outback. I admit that I'll miss some of the hooliganism of the original; there was something so fun about having a production sports car that was really a hopped up commuter car. But it seems our bratty little boy has finally grown up. I could see someone purchasing this over an M3 (not that I personally wouldn't have had an STi hatch over an M3, but many didn't like the boy-rallye-racer charm).

Been waiting for this announcement for over 1.5 years!! Definitely looks better than the impreza-based mule photos we saw from last year! I doubt all that stuff will come with the production model: 20" rims? huge brakes? LED headlights & taillights? carbon fiber roof? As long as they keep true to roots of why people like the WRX (value for money) and keep the base price under 30k.

Rear looks oddly like a 6-series BMW, not sure if I like it. Need a higher-angle shot of how the rear glass looks. Also the Scion tC propotions while having 4 doors is kinda odd. They should just make it a 2-door and offer a 5door hatch later.

It kind of looks like an XJ to me, but obviously very good looking. Subaru cars aren't known for being beautify designed normally, but the concept looks nice. I hope if makes it intact.

The main question at hand is with the front wheels that far foward, how are they keeping this AWD? Or will the new WRX be RWD?

You can't add four inches of wheelbase and drop 4 inches of overall length and keep anything close to the current drivetrain configuration of having the front axles behind the engine...

Let the speculation begin.

Cool

You know, I like it! Like the color, wheels, front end, and the fact it is lower and wider, as well as longer in the wheelbase. Hope this translates to more leg room in the rear seats!
To me, this car was built with a purpose, and I think Subaru hit a homer!
This is, hopefully, the production model, with, maybe a tweak here and there, if needed. 280-320 HP? Yeah, works for me!
I just wish they had shown the interior to get an idea what the setup will be.
Now, drop that motor in a BRZ, and the fun will begin!
Keep it under 90, folks!

It should be a coupe or have the doors hang a little lower and be based off the RX-8's suedo coupe front doors with suicide rear doors.

still confused has to how they will manage to fit the engine and drivetrain in that car with so little room up front. I can only guess they are no longer using a true mechanical AWD set up. But it looks pretty impressive.

I absolutely love this. Distinguished and grown up like. Couple BMW guys I work with are already prepping their back accounts for this release.

Subaru nailed this one!
