I cant tell if something inside the mirror is making the noise, or if the mirror rattles against the windsheild at the mount. Anyone ever tried to take one of these mirrors apart?
I have a dimming/compas mirror so there is a wire coming out of it that goes between the roof and roof trim. Also, that wire is covered by a piece of plastic that covers the wire and the mirror mount; it comes off pretty easily if you take a closer look at it. It seems when I remove that plastic piece the mirror rattle goes away. I tried putting some silicon on the underside of that plastic trim so it does not directly touch the windshield and that worked for some time, but than the rattle came back. So now it seems that its a combination of the mirror wire rattling against the roof and/or that plastic piece. I managed to mount that plastic piece snugly and havent had the rattle since. I would suggest pressing down on that plastic piece to see if rattle goes away, than temporarily removing it as you try to pin down the problem. Good luck!

I would suggest completely removing the trim piece and drive around without it for several days. If the rattle is gone, then you know where to attack it. In my car, I have a rattle that I *thought* was the trim piece but ends up being something under the dash! I'm thinking of stuffing some stiff foam in between the pillar and the dash since the rattle seems to go away if I put a light pressure on the dash near the defroster outlet.

I've found that the easiest way to isolate rattles is to sequentially remove trim pieces until the rattle goes away. Then it's just a task of finding out what part of the removed part(s) needs to be quieted.

A good example of this is a light rattle I had in the rear of the car. I removed the entire rear interior trim and it still remained. It ended up being the seatbelt reels which there was nothing I could possibly do about it. So, knowing that, I knew no amount of changes to the trim pieces was going to actually solve that rattle.

So did we determine if there is a solution to this rattle yet? I have it as well and it is so annoying! It got up to 45 or so and it was still there this weekend. Has anyone taken it to the dealer? Mine is still under a year old, so it should be covered for something like this, right?

I'm almost 100% positive that it's coming from the joint where the back window meets the roof under the headliner. When I pull the headliner down the sound definitely gets louder. It may also be coming from the side and bottom rear-window joints, but I can't get my head close enough to those areas to be certain...lol.

The best way I can describe the sound is like several girls tapping their fingernails on a desk, but really fast, so fast in fact, that it almost sounds like a scraping sound at times. The sound is quite brite, and certainly suggests that the joints holding the rear-window in are compromised.

Has anyone fixed this one?

i took mine to a local, and highly reputable, glass place to inquire about possible solutions and the best they could offer was trying to remove the window and then reseal it. our rear windows aren't really held in by any moulding, so the suggestion that thicker moulding would solve it, won't work. the moulding that is present is there primarily for cosmetic and protection of the seals around the window: not actually anchoring it persay. their assessment was that the glue holding the window down was coming free and that the window was, as we all describe it, rattling. they quoted $100 to remove the window and reseat/glue it...but that was if they could resue the window as removal will sometimes crack the glass itself.

one question/clarification i would like to make: does anyone have this rattling who HAS NOT upgraded their suspensions at all?

the rattle seems most prevalent on vehicles with stiffer suspensions...causing the body/chassis to absorb more impact and flex more, potentially loosening the rear window with the increased flexing...

Yeah get a louder stereo. LOL Naw that whole deck is always causing ugly noises for me too. Next time I pull the rear seat for something..fuel pump or whatever..I'll prolly put some extra sound deadener on the insides of the deck lid. Also check your springs. I had a noise coming from outside near the tops of the springs where they met up with the mount. Retighten your strut tops. Does it feel loose when driving.?

pay attention to the rear window rattle guys. a local NESIC guy had a rattle similar to what we've been discussing and it got worse and worse until, unfortunately, he was able to lift the rear driver's side corner of the window completely off the car. luckily, it didn't fall out and it cost him $100 bucks at a local glass place to have it reset...just an FYI...

I've had the super annoying rear windshield rattle since mile 400 on a stock 2004 sti. Took it to the dealer and got them to "agree" that the noise did seem to be coming from the window/frame seal... they then basically just refused to do anything about it because it is after all, just an annoying noise, and they would have had to remove/re-seat the window to "maybe" fix it... I tried the argument of a "compromised" seal, which could eventually lead to water ingress etc... NO DICE! (Santa Monica Subaru btw)
i've been living with it for 2 years now. Sucks, cuz other than this, the other rattles are frikin kid stuff...

Why not talk to someone directly at Subaru. Talk to someone on their internet site. I usually find it easier to kill someone with kindness over an email carefully explaining your situation. I do warranties for all types of vendors because I work at a wholesaler. Over the phone and in person can be tricky depending on the certain individual you may encounter. Try going directly for the head of the beast. Explain that you were inquiring to get another 2006 STi but before you sold yours you wanted to have yours fixed. If they don't want to lose a valuable and faithful customer they may think twice. They may not but it's a shot. Someone should try it.

Subaru Stars Metallic squeak from passenger quarter window

On my '00 RS coupe I had a high pitched metallic squeak that was caused by a loose nut holding the quarter glass trim to the body. It is on a long stud that can be reached using needle nose pliers or a deep socket (7mm, I think).

I've been on jdm sti v8 suspension with jdm pinks for some time and never heard that rear window rattling UNTIL I changed tires. Had 225-50-16 falken ziex for 25k and just switched to 225-45-17 pzero neros. Just turned 1k on the tires and the rattling is driving me crazy!!! I guess the lower profile and stiffer sidewalls do make a difference in other aspects than handling . I've had passengers try to locate the source of the sound to no avail. My passengers think I'm some kind of crazy OCD driver now, trying to find rattles.

I'm going to have my neighbor drive the car this weekend and I'm going to ride in the back seat to hear it up close and personal.

Ryan

edit: just read the NESIC thread. Flying rear windows...fricken great. Now I'm going to see if I can lift up my rear window.

Ok, i just found a rattle the other day. Ive thought it was the vent or the vin plate, but i found it was actually my sun visor that was rattling where it met the headliner. I tried tightening the screw but they were as tight as could be. Im going to try a rubber bushing type thing and see if it helps. those of you having the vin rattle that wont seem to fix, check the visor.

This is on a 2002 WRX with tein suspension.

Of course there are still other rattles, but at least that one is fixed.

Use a flathead wrapped in a towel or rag so you don't scratch the dash. I usually start from the passenger side. Just pop it up from the passenger side and work your way to the driver side and the whole piece comes off. Those white clips you will see cause a lot of the rattles. Take the white clips off and apply a little rubber cement to where it attaches. Put the clips back on let dry. I got that off of Scoobymods.com

While that's going on you may want to put a little something under the VIN as that rattles sometimes. I put a small length of bicycle inner tube and that worked fine.

so i was at the dealer for 2.5 hours while they tried to fix the rattle. they completly dismantled the back seats and rear deck and i drove him around to listen. there was one rattle coming from the baby seat hook on the top deck. he also tightened and lubed pretty much every bolt back there. they thought they got it, but weren't sure, and said to bring it back if it was still there. i left the dealer, and noticed the noise right away. So i went back to the dealer. Apparently the noise is coming from 2 body pannels that are crimped together, i think he said the outer and innner fender? They're going to have to get in there, and put some seam sealer between the pannels, there must've been a spot missed in manufacturing. They need to order some parts, like new window trim, because they have to take the rear window out to make sure that it doesn't break when working on it. So I'm going to take it back in next week when they have the parts, it'll take 2 days or so and they'll give me a loaner. All under warranty. I'll post a followup once i have more results.
