Default Messed up my tranny???? :(

Hey guys, I was driving up a little hill today and I shifted semi-hard from 3-2-3 again, and when I downshifted into 2, I heard a little pop somewhere near the back of my car. ( It sounded like) All gears seem to work, but there is a horrible clicking sound. Sort of sounds like a tractor engine. Its a 2002 WRX manual. I am scared to drive it/fast/slow/ etc.

What should I do???

I know these tranny's are notoriously weak.

PS: Forgot to add:
The tranny doesn't make any noise if it is in gear with clutch down and engine on.
Tranny doesn't make noise if car is coasting in neutral.

Park it and have it towed (flat bed). Have it looked at. Don't take a chance on making it worse.

Report back?

Just drove it a little bit.... the noise occurs only when 2nd gear is selected.

Should I buy a new tranny or just replace 2nd gear? Could I have popped a synchro?

speak for yourself, mine's perfectly fine at 143k miles. noobs!

Take it to a reputable shop and have them take a look at it. If you don't want to drive it there, get a flatbad to tow it.

Some people get sand in the vag syndrome about the 5mt.

+1 on the tow it and not make it worse.

Hope it works out for you man!

wouldn't that squeak only when the clutch is depressed?? Anyways.. the only time it makes weird noise is when it is in 2nd gear. and i don't have to tow it... i was lucky enough to have it freak out on the last hill before my driveway. =/

The throwout bearing will rattle when you have it in neautral and you have nothing pushed down.

How does it shift into/out of 2nd? If the shift is OK but you are still hearing this sound, you most likely broke/chipped a tooth (or teeth) on 2nd gear.

Sounds like you broke a tooth off of 2nd gear

You should tow it to a shop you trust.

Well I started the car this morning and moved it. It was making a slight grinding noise in neutral also. It shifts in and out of second gear just fine. I'm not driving the car.

But taking it to a shop is not an option for me. They charge too much and i'm already broke trying to pay for this car as it is. I have rebuilt transmissions before, would it be better to buy a used tranny, or try to rebuild this one?

you are much better off rebuilding your tranny
vs buying a new one.

get it into a shop for a tear-down.

So does having sc/hc PPG combo in "N." I wish someone could've taken a pic of the look on mine and 4wdrift's faces when everything was buttoned up with the swap and we turned on the car on and heard that clacking.

That's what it sounds like. That's a bummer man. Try not to drive on it so it doesn't make things worse. Really sorry to hear that.

If you have rebuilt trannies before why would you continue to drive and move the car? Surely you have seen the carnage that those pesky little chunks of teeth will cause if they get caught in any of the other gears.

My bet is that grinding noise is metal fragments in the bearings, if in fact you did break a tooth.

Just pull the trans and dissassemble, then you will know what is what.

It would be a good exuse to get ppg gears??? In reality, I just moved it from my driveway and parked it in our shop. Not too far... maybe 20 feet. I think it will be ok.
