Yeah and that is the regular prius not the PHEV prius. I found data for the model S as well, though I am not sure how good it is. I might post a graph of it later. I have the Volt, Leaf, Prius PHV and the Model S from introduction to may 2013.

That takes effort though

I don't think there is enough data to really know what is going on though just from this graph. Between pre-orders, price changes, random stoppages, price variation there are a lot of factors.

For example what percent of the prius PHVs are sold in states which offer HOV access to PHEVs? The HOV benefit is enormous even though the Prius PHV is not that special as far as a plug in goes. I have seen a number of anecdotal stories about people buying them for HOV access because they are the cheapest option for a user who does not ever plan to bother plugging their vehicle in.

We would need to filter out volts purchased by the Federal government as well.

You're welcome If you can find the data I would be happy to filter it out, but don't let anti GM bias make you silly.

It seems extremely shortsighted to filter out only federal government, what about GE? What about other corporations (who bought leafs, prius PHVs as well?) what about states?

Fleet purchases in general should be filtered out most likely, but I don't have the data to do it.

I am a huge fan of the volt drive train I will not deny it, but I dislike the car. At the same time the model S is very nice, but I dislike the drivetrain. To me a car needs to give me freedom to drive wherever I want around the nations maintained roads. Otherwise I can just take other forms of transit.

Sorry your work is appreciated sxotty, I had to walk by a Volt in the NASA parking lot today with his 12" bumper sticker that said, "I am saving the planet"

Arrow Tesla Model 3: The Catch-All Thread

Quote:
Some of you may not have experience running an automotive production facility. If you did, you would know that new models start out as “alpha” cars. Those are usually prototypes and design exercises and are often used to help design the assembly line that will make the finished cars. The Tesla Model 3 alpha version was on display at the launch party a year ago and on rare occasions since then.

Tesla Model 3

After that come “beta” cars. They are built on a special pre-production assembly line. In addition to helping engineers figure out how to actually build the cars in a factory setting they are often used for real world test driving — going to Death Valley to see how they handle intense heat, driving to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to test cold weather operation, driving over dusty back roads and on long stretches of interstate highways.

Last week, during a conference call with investment bankers involved with the sale of more Tesla stock, Elon Musk made a surprising announcement. He said the analytic tools Tesla has developed will allow the company to skip the beta phase entirely for the Model 3. He said his people will be driving early release Tesla Model 3 cars within “one to two weeks.”

That off hand remarks reveals several things about the upcoming Model 3. First, early release cars are built on the actual assembly line that will be used for normal production. So the Model 3 assembly line is complete and ready to go. Second, there will be no beta test fleet plying the highways and byways of America looking for glitches, parts that don’t fit right, or other issues that would affect the initial build quality of the cars.

In fact, Musk hinted that because of those sophisticated analytics, the build quality of the Model 3 will be excellent starting with the very first cars. He says it will be much better than it was at the start of Model S or Model X production. (In the case of the Model X, that’s not saying much. The quality of the early cars was flat out awful.)

Once again, Musk is pushing the envelope and expecting results unheard of in the automotive industry. One potential drawback of such aggressive goals is that if any production issues are revealed by the early release cars, the company will have precious little time available to identify the issues and correct them in time to meet Musk’s expectations of full production for the Model 3 by the third quarter of this year.

Musk has one other interesting comment during the conference call. He mentioned almost as an aside that the company will switch over to the new format 2170 battery cells for the Model S and Model X by the end of the year. The 18650 battery cells for those cars are currently made by Panasonic in Japan and shipped to the United States. The 2170 cells are manufactured at the Gigafactory in Nevada.

Elon Musk always sets the bar high on the theory that even if his companies only achieve 85% of their targets, that’s still better than 100% of what other companies are striving for. You have to admire the man for his chutzpah, but that doesn’t mean you would enjoy working for him.

Well with Teslas reputation for clean and trouble free vehicles, I do not see this going poorly.

I still support them in spirit but yes you have a point and why I got my deposit back. Others can guinea. Same as firearms...new to market = let others beta test and pay more for the privilege. At least with Tesla, the early people don't get reamed on price. They just have to be concerned with the problems.

I wonder if this analysis has any factor. Sounds like their financial situation is the greatest

They are fast tracking because they need all that money held up from people waiting in line for this model. I have 3 very close friends that ordered. I was tempted but decided against it. I will sit back and wait for a future iteration.

The whole brand is riding on this new car. It's a make or break moment for them. It'll either make them and they will be around for decades or he'll turn into the world's premier battery maker for all the other manus. I think he'll pull it off. His company's timing and my own, were just a year off. If a sedan works for those, they should be rewarded with one sick DD, especially the P/D's.

I think they should just focus on battery and solar tech. Their solar power shingles are revolutionary. I need a new roof in the next 5-6 years and would love tye new soar shingles.

If the new car is delayed or doesn't perform, or have issues and they go belly up, I wonder which auto manufacturer would buy them. Their technology and vehicles are too damn good and currently proven for them to just fizzle. I bet you would see a huge bidding war between VAG, Ford, Chevy.

I hope they do make it and the company really takes off with gob loads of funding. But I also wouldn't have any issue with 1 of the 3 I mentioned above taking it and running with it. Personally i'd rather see VAG than the other but that's just me.

I'm sure they are running scenarios in the C-suites of those companies right now.

Tesla is Musk. Without him, it isn't worth anything. There might be some value to the Supercharger network depending on how those contracts are set up, but that is about it.

Elon Musk says Tesla will start taking orders for Solar Roofs in April

A key pillar in Elon Musk’s vision for Tesla and SolarCity is becoming a reality next month.

Musk says Tesla will start taking orders for the company’s Solar Roofs — entire roofs made of shingles with built-in solar cells — in April. We do not know, however, how long buyers will need to wait in order to have their Solar Roofs installed. We’ve asked.

We also still don’t know how much these roofs will cost, as Business Insider points out, but Musk has suggested they may be cheaper than conventional roofs, factoring in longevity, repairs, and energy savings.

In other news, Musk shared a video this morning promoting the “first drive of a release candidate version of [the] Model 3” on Twitter. Tesla’s first mass-market car is slated for release by the end of 2017.

I have 35 panels now. The fact that the price hasn't even been mentioned yet should tell you something.

While I think a solar roof panel is a good idea, I have to hold judgment until I see cost, installation methods, and connectivity of the shingles to each other and the house.

It could be great for the entire world, or it could just be a get richer gimmick from Elon.
Did he get any government grants to make these? Where are they being built?

I also wonder how reflective the solar panels are. They did a few test with the solar fields in Nevada and it completely killed off / drive away all the wild life in addition I believe they reported the temperature being several degrees warmer in that area.

I'll try to dig up the old article.

I'm a fan of solar and going renewable / green energy but I also think everything has a downside and wonder what those could be.

I'm more interested in the shingles than the model 3. The only data given so far about cost is it should be comparable to a new shingle roof (not shingle replacement, new roof). The big caveat is that means slate or other roof type not asphalt which is the predominant roofing material in the U.S.

I'll probably build a new home before my existing home needs a new roof so in 10-15 years I'm sure something like this with a powerwall will be a cost competitive option.

Imagine what it'll look like for people in the air to look down on a suburb near the airport.

Better have those sunglasses ready.

And yes, birds are the primary victims of solar panels. Let's not forget bees are already endangered and since we all love our CORN for everything under the sun...
