subaru baja misfiring and backfiring under accelertation
2003 Subaru baja 100k miles on it.
The car will run perfect under hard acceleration untill I drive it for about 5 minutes, then when i give it more than Half throttle it will start to stutter, backfire and miss on Cylinder 3, I have tested the spark plug wires, looked at the spark plugs, installed new fuel filter, and put in a new throttle body with the 3 sensors, As to no avail. I was also thinking maybe it has a bad fuel injector, but that wouldnt explain why it runs perfect when its cold. Has anyone had these same problems? thanks. |

Mass Air Flow Sensor
Could be the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I have a 98 Forester that had about the same symptoms before the MAF failed completely. It had about 150K miles on it.

Dunno...... like i said, my friends 03 wrx started having the same issue one night took it to the dealership the next morning (they actually had to reflash the ecu twice) and it fixed the prob.....just a weird glitch or something.

You could try an ECU reset, but I suspect you've probably already done that with all of the work you've already done! Disconnect your battery for a few hours then reconnect.
But I doubt that would help - that really sounds like a sensor problem. You mentioned a new throttle body with 3 sensors. Which sensors were replaced? |

I agree, change the plugs/wires if you haven't done that yet. Have you checked Camshaft/ crankshaft position sensors? They seem to go bad regularly.

I've never run into an issue with it backfiring when I accelerate just when I coast downhill. My '03 pops, I guess it's afterlighting, when I coast because of a lack of back pressure to the engine which I still haven't fixed yet.

I am experiencing exactly the same symptoms. In the summer I had the 96000Km service(so new spark plugs and wires). Even before that, I noticed that quite randomly, but never when cold, I couldn't accelerate normally after stopping at a light. I could not predict though when it would happen. Last month it was worse and worse, the frequency of loosing power at lights or after reducing speed was higher, and finally it started to misfire and backfire when I insisted on pushing the gas pedal to get higher than 1000-1500 rot/min on tachometer. I cannot elaborate technically as I am not that qualified. I was able to start just fine at -25C. But after the engine got warmed, it started to stutter. It has periods of running perfectly at high speed e.g 110Km/h, and then stutter. At such high speed it seems to be better because it just recovers quickly, but at low speed, especially when idled, it is just like not all the cylinders work. It helps if I keep it on park at lights and push the gas from time to time when I fill it starting to stutter so that I get more than 2000 rot/min. I suspect some kind of a clot along the gas tract from the tank to the engine. But that might be of course over-simplistic. I also considered that the air/gas ratio not right, as I get a strong smell of unburned gasoline. I booked a service next week. I also need to replace the muffler, which I new I should for few months already.

My 03 NA/Auto Baja does the same thing as long as the temps are below 0C. Stumbles, won't idle properly, strong smell of unburned gas. I turn off the car, sometimes it dies completely and on restart it's fine. It acts like the injectors are on full bore and it's running on two cylinders. It only happens in cold weather, and only after it's been parked all night. If it was a '68 Dart I'd suspect the choke but fuelies don't have one. It's done that since I bought it almost two years ago. Whatever it is, a restart has cured it every time so far.
