Would a RWD conversion fix the gearbox issues?
So I went to an RA gearbox about a year ago. Since I blew my first transmission just driving normal I am forever paranoid. Now that my car is becoming a non daily driver I was thinking of going to a RWD setup.
Would a RWD setup realistically fix the transmission problems that are so common in these cars? Id hate to think my transmission still needs to be treated like glass when the wheels should be able to slip instead of break. If I cant drive my car like it should be driven at the track Im going to have to buy something that I can when it comes down to it. I love this car too much to abandon it and was hoping there was a permanent fix in the way of a drivetrain change.

I was contemplating rwd as well.
Awd is incredible but I am wondering about converting to rwd to see how it works out (I have a little extra cash to do it) Do you know how hard the center diff removal would be? I dont really have the necessary tools, what do you think a shop would charge? I was looking at the Watanabe service center diff replacement. |

If you go RWD, you will likely start to blow out the rear axles, so think again.

Also the car would behave completely different. Our chassis is designed around the all wheel drive .

It would fix the problem of breaking 1st-5th... however, you will now be breaking center diff transfer gears and everything on the back side of the driveline. And you would have to do quite a bit of suspension tuning to make it handle well, or it will tend to be very tail-happy.
Your options: -Dump a lot of money into a proper rwd swap -Dump a lot of money into PPG gears -Dump a lot of money into a 6mt. |

Keep on driving with your RA gears. Are they treated? If I where to get RA gears, I would have them SHOT PEENED before going in.
Don't go RWD just yet, you're just looking to break something else. Drive until it breaks. I'm lucky my "spare/tempory" tranny ('93 L AWD 5spd) survived the dyno day. I put down 270whp/wtrq on the MUSTANG dyno, BUT it later broke that night while doing pulls. Three weeks later it finally locked out of gear so I'm waiting on a 6spd. |

Ive been holding off heavy suspension work while I think about where I want to go so the suspension portion would be compensated for. I spoke to dom at kito last night and the legacy/newer sti 6 speed has come down to 3900 or so. That could be another consideration if I were to sell my RA's and get that. |
