Default What would you change in the base model?

I'm curious to hear what STI owners have found annoying or poor. Peeves. Nuisances. Oversights.

That is, you bought a 300HP Subaru that was expected to handle and brake well with great grip.

Understeer is a safety item, for example. It's a little unreasonable to say it should oversteer a little.

Reality:
Paint--chips too easily, poor binder
Seats--something that does not attract dirt so much.
Steering--bushings I think were changed already, even quicker rack for me
Suspension--the car should come with STi Pink springs, the USDM springs screw up the balance with rest of the system.
Gearing--I feel like 5% wider each would be good (or up the redline)
AVLS--(isn't that the AVCS on the exhaust cams) I think we'll see this eventually

Get rid of those push-pin attachment things
More thought/design going into front end aerodynamics.

Dreams:

Forged pistons and well balance crank assembly-->8000 RPM redline (or more). Plus engine design changes to support that extra head room. AVLS would help tremendously if we did get more revs.

Who doesn't want a larger turbo.

Tilton clutch.

seats (not all of us americans are fatasses)
better rear struts (annoying sounds made by struts settling when going over small bumps)
gearing (make 1-4 wider...then the gap from 4->5 wont suck balls, plus youll benefit from better around town drivability from 1-4)
turbo (c'mon, IHI, you know what the pe1820f is made of (all of your own parts). they shouldve put that turbo in the car stock)
injectors (a little bigger please)
pump (a little bigger please)

you know. with all of these things, subaru wouldve done the STi right. they still couldve had their 300/300 rating, the same spool, and then you wouldve seen 350whp STi's with just a reflash and TBE. not to mention, with the better gearing (hitting 60mph in 2nd), subaru couldve been celebrated even more with a ~4.4 0-60.

Yes!!!! I was cursing Subaru as I tried to remove all of those damn things to try and put my FMIC on the car this past weekend.

I would like to see all USDM STi's get the Spec-C roof vent as an option, and maybe an A/C delete if you chose it.

The car tracks all over the road. I dislike that quite a bit. Also the road noise is horrible.

the rear clunk that 90% of STi's I have been in sucks too. I'm sure mine will start doing it when i get some more miles on it.

As was said already... the seats suck too. I almost fall on the floor under hard cornering. It puts me so far out of position I miss gears because my arm is 100% out of place due to me sliding around in the seat. The 05 STi has smaller, better seats imho.

oh yeah... If I hit bumps when cornering at moderate speeds my streering columb makes banging noises and the wheel physically bangs back and forth in my hands... Feels like the front wheels are going to fall off.

The brakes, ABS, EBD, and DCCD are the best part about the car imho.

All the good stuff was already mentioned except that clunk, but somebody mentioned that in the next post. My car just developed its clunk over the weekend too....last weekend sucked.

It looks like most of these comments were from 04 for owners. How about 05 stuff(mine comes in the end of july)The only thing I would change would be making the wing an option.

Thats funny owl, I know what your talking about i think. My buddys STi trunk latch is pretty much jammed up. Sometimes it wont pop at all and he needs to use the key.
If you yank the lever a million times it sometimes works... but not always.

The gearing is a tad too short, like others said, and the turbo should really be larger. We have a bigger engine than the EVO guys and they stick us with a tiny turbo so that it kills our top end

wanna know the fix? loosen the bolts on the trunk latch (right above the bumper, not the one on the trunk), and move it up a bit.

try again, should work fine again.

No no, the keyless trunk pop on the factory remote.
Even the Hyundai accent has it as an option

Yeah, just give the USA the Spec C. I will then take the money pit I have now and get that instead of the current USDM STi.

I don't know if it is just the ratio that needs fixed (althought that should help); but I would definately think a better syncro setup (not the easy to kill single cone) would be better for long term reliability.

a proper first gear i mean 20mph at 3k isn't enough...i feel that the second i hit WOT in first im out of first...that shouldn't happen first needs to be longer atleast to 30mph at 3k then all would be well.. Beside that id say get a rear-view mirror that doesen't rattle everytime my subs hit. And well they could fix it and just make the car a 5 speed with bigger gears and then i think first gear wopuld be a little less hectic when launching.

Blasphemer.. j/k I think one improvement would be to make the STI wing an option as previously mentioned. Personally I want to down grade to the smaller WRX wing. My biggest complaint is the fact we are purchasing an STI and it just blows my mind that I have to purchase the STI Springs and all the other little STI parts that come standard on our JDM counterpart. Can I get a hallelujah!! this is just IMHO..

offset
it is the ratio. people dont wait for the transmission to slow down before they shift into 5th, therefore they wear the synchro every time.

1. no stereo. Make it an option. Its not in there for free, why am I paying for this POS?
2. braided brake lines.
3. Red clock/radio/hvac lighting. Make it match.
4. water spray tank that holds more than a thimble full of water. Even 1 liter larger would be nice.
5. One touch operation on ALL windows. My POS jetta had this and it was 11 years older.
6. SLIGHTLY faster steering rack. My 05 has 15.0-1 The 04 was 15.2-1 Make it 14.8-1 and it will be perfect.
7. Offer the front lip and rear underspoilers as options in the US, not just japan.
8. CF interior trim like the 02-03's??? Why not? WHY!
9. Dead pedal that matches the other 3.
10. Make flywheel 1-2lb lighter. STill plenty heavy, but motor wont rev so sluggishly.

Thats all I can think of for now.
