I've been playing with this a little. Hopefully I'll be able to figure this out. My trunk tension rods weren't swapped after my third trunk swap. I got lazy. I had the STi rods in there on a wingless trunk and so eventually my mounts for the rods snapped off. Now I have to hold up my trunk by hand.

gas things dont operate on hinges...just gotta connect them and line it up correctly...

So i took my carbon trunk off and put my sti trunk back on, damn this thread came in handy. I had no idea how those things went back on. Props for this thread.

It's good to see a fresh write up on this topic. My 96 Legacy sedan had a broken torsion spring. And that made the lid quite heavy for the family to use.

I had picked up the stronger GT lid torsion springs at the junkyard. And spent some time wrestling them into the car. It worked great - kind of nice the stronger springs opened the trunk lid fully when unlatched instead of simply unlatching and opening slightly.

Unfortunately the junkyard spring broken a couple of months later. I bought new ones on-line and the installation went a lot better.

So good on you for the detailed photos and explanation - best online I've seen so far!

Hey guys! is there any physical appearance between the three torsion rods?
I've have seen few different colors on the web. mines black on psm wrx. the reason why I asked cause I upgrade to sti wing and never realized I have to changed the torsion rods. the trunk still pop open but have to open like lifting weights.

Hmmm, wonder if any schmuck like me has removed the torsion rods strictly for the weight savings? Wonder how much they weigh. 2-4 lbs is my guess.
