Default H6 Twin Turbo Build

The build has begun! Well, the strip down really, but you have to start somewhere... I'll try not to bore you too much with details but here goes with some background information.

My name in Laurence, I live in Christchurch, New Zealand, where JDM Subaru's of all flavours are ten a penny, including the non-US market twin turbo Legacy (which aint as great as some may think...) My particular model is a 1990 1st generation Legacy GT-turbo station-wagon.

Originally powered by an EJ20T running through a 5-speeder to all 4 wheels, it will soon be replaced with a built EZ30TT, using the same internals as both the Perrin and Sponaugle builds (less the sleeves of Perrin's). Oh, and its the earlier non-R spec motor as well, so no AVCS...

My intentions initially were to run the motor as standard with a couple of low pressure (5psi) turbos to work out a lot of the teething problems associated with this kind of setup, such as headers, top mount intercooler, engine management and oil/water cooling. However, as these motors are not available here new without a massive, and I mean NZ$18k massive, price tag, my only option was used, and a damaged one at that! So my plan moved onto stage 2 which was to pull my original motor, strip the new one down to just block and heads and drop in the chassis to get headers and TMIC made. During the stripping of the H6 motor I got a little carried away, and curiosity of just how they came apart got the better of me and before I knew it I had the crankcase separated!...

These are all at the machine shop at the moment getting cleaned, crack tested, honed, balanced, etc...

Seeing as the NZ$ is pretty good against the US$ I thought I would order my internals; Supertech pistons, valves, valve springs & retainers, Pauter rods and Ajusa gasket set. They arrived last week...

Having seen the awesome finish VHT Wrinkle paint gave Perrin's motor, I went down the same track for mine... (shame it doesn't come in other colours)

That's quite an impressive project list. Can't wait to see it done.

NICE!! Could you provide more details on your thoughts on turbo choice and engine management? I'm curious.

Questioned that myself, but then realised its the affect of the oil on unmachined alloy. At least its not black! But seeing it gold made me confident of the regular servicing this motor received, and noticing the very little wear on the crank, cylinders and cams has confirmed this.

Default H6 Twin Turbo Build

I'm also in the process of building the fuel system. Need to order a few more parts from Summit Racing but I had my stock rails modified...

Word of warning! Beware www.expressfuelpumps.com!!! I bought a Bosch 040 pump from this site via Paypal and in 2 weeks haven't had replies to any of my e-mails nor have I received the pump... Currently being investigated by Paypal. Hopefully I'll get my cash back to put towards one from a reputable supplier.

Also, avoid using brake cleaner to clean recently painted parts. These were sprayed with VHT Hi-temp paint and as you will notice one of the fuel rails is bare. Well, it fell over when still wet, making a few marks, so I let it harden and just sanded out the imperfections with the idea of just touching up those areas, but when I cleaned it down the brake cleaner disolved the paint! Oh well, at least it came up ready to paint again...

So this project has escalated into a full engine restoration, having had to replace the damaged components (timing chain case front AND rear, quite possibly a head, and have the oil filter housing repaired), painting the covers, replacing all the internals, etc. As for turbo choice, after some discussion with Jeff Perrin and looking at PHATSuby's project, a couple of GT2871's with internal WG's would provide enough boost for the 700hp I'm after.

Other mods to the motor include ARP head studs, remote dual oil filters, 13-row oil cooler and QuarterMaster clutch mated to a balanced WRX flywheel and 6-speeder. ECU will be by a local firm Link Electronics (www.linkecu.com) - the LinkPLUS G3 system. Injectors will be 750cc Siemens or Bosch units, fed by a Mallory FPR and Trick Flow filter.

And in case you were wondering the entire car is receiving the same treatment, with the chassis being uprated with Bilstein shocks, Tein springs, Whiteline swaybars, Neoprene bushes all round, and all the conponents restored with the latest chassis coating technology (impervious to stone chips). Brakes are STi 4 pots up front, WRX rears with Top Secret Super Street pads and stainless hoses.

The bodywork will eventually be bought up to show standard because being a 17 year old vehicle its a bit tired, as the interior for which I have chosen late-model B4 half leather seats and a full dash retrim in stone Alcantara... mmm! Touches of Audi may also be extended to the 3.0 Quattro badge I saw the other day. If only it had TT on the end...

So just to finish, I'll leave you with a nice wee pic of my Legacy, taken in Queenstown, New Zealand... Until next time.

not sure those stock fuel rails look like they are up to the task of making big power...not sure what your goal is though...

Stock rails are larger than you think! Perrin is using pretty much the same setup as I've done and you all know what kind of power he's making... Its the injectors that would be limiting, but 750cc jobbies should be up to the task.

Thanks. Yeah, I guess I do have quite an attachment to the car. Plus its a bit different, ultimate sleeper. Remember the chassis is going to be pure 2006 STi... and then some! Besides, I already own it and don't have the budget for a later model.

Cheers, Laurence

Thanks, not bad for 17 years old! Its still stock as, not even a dump valve, so I think its about due for some serious mods...

I think Cobb tuning built a time attack Twin Turbo H6 w/ an all CF body. Anyone know what's up with that project? I went poking around their website for an update but haven't seen one.

Oh, as for the fuel rail mods, easy...

Cut the ends off, keeping just the 3 injector bosses and mounting brackets (leave as much tube as possible) and sweat in some 3/8 NPT to -6AN steel adaptors (sweating means heating the end of the fuel rail so it expands slightly and then inserting the adaptor so when the rail cools it clamps down on it). Then just run a braise around the edge to seal it.

You could use -8 adaptors if you're expecting huge power, or if you want to run the rails in series (mine are parallel, so my -8 main supply splits at the FPR into 2x -6 hoses to the rails).

why the topmount i/c? I would use twin front mounts like the audi. the build sounds well thoughtout other than that. It just seams you wont have the underhood room for a topmount that suports 2 gt2871r turbos running 5 psi or what ever you end up with.

wow thats awesome. so It just requires a simple pipe sweat? I was thinking I would have to weld on new adapters(my welder can't do aluminum )

I'm definatly going to check this out for my 98 Side feed rails...

where did you buy your lines ?

"NPT" is something pipe thread? what is "AN" ?
