The hell is going on
I'm subscribed to three people on youtube:Smurfinwrx, Evanshanks, and 370xforme. Both Evan and 370z are experiencing car problems. Both of their cars have less than 30k miles. 370z has only had his car for a year and he is already experiencing a ring land failure. He claims he doesn't push his car hard, babies it, let's it warm up properly, basically all the stuff you should be doing. I want to install stage 1 w/ intake, but with all these problems arising, I don't know anymore.
Some information about me and my car. -2013 STI -7xxx miles -oil changed by Subaru at 3200 miles -NamelessPerformance CBE -I don't push my car hard at all So my question is should I be worried about my car? I understand that we only hear the bad news because no one actually shares to the world "Hey my Subaru is running great!", just like the damn news, we most often times hear about the bad.. TL DR, should I be worried about flashing to stage 1 w/ intake?

Don't modify the engine or anything beyond a cat back if you are worried.

Sounds like a problem linked specifically to YouTube. If you have a YT account , I'd be worried if I was you.

No offense to Evan and 370 ( I love his videos ), we are a similar age, but, they do NOT baby their cars. 370 has a few videos of him ripping it ;D. All he really needs is forged pistons... He should know that by now . ( I hope he responds here ). Evan doesn't baby his car as well, infact, one of his recent videos showing the comparison between UEL and EL headers involves long bouncing off of the Cobb Launch Control which causes a lean condition. That's no bueno .
Forged Pistons and an amazing tune lads! |

Subaru warranties your car for many years. If ANYTHING goes wrong, they fix it, free. They give you a free car to drive and everything.
Ringland failure is specifically a knock related problem. The car must be knocking for this part to fail. The ECU is also pretty good about pulling timing when knock does occur and it VERY carefully brings it back up. It learns. The knock that can happen is only at high boost also, peak output. You can't drive the car lightly and cause this to happen. I don't care if you put 87 octane in your STI. If you're not flooring it, it won't knock. This is a gasoline detonation problem that requires high cylinder pressures to happen, i.e. max boost. |

You have a new STI! You shouldn't be worried about pushing it...why would you buy the car otherwise if you never push it? Abusing it with cold start redline revs and ignoring general common sense might warrant worry. I'm personally finicky about my warranty so I don't plan on modding until after my warranty expires. But most people on here will tell you that even going to stage 2 is relatively conservative, and as long as you keep within the recommended/normal mods associated with stage 1 or 2, you'll be fine 95% of the time. it's when people start doing crazy stuff or get creative with the mods that things can start to happen.

Wait. Because random people you follow on YouTube have issues you think it will happen to you?
I know someone that won the lottery, my time is coming soon right? And you don't know their full story. Live your life and don't worry about things out of your realm. |

Either way you run the risk of breaking ring lands. The stock tunes on these cars are terrible and there have been many people break ring lands on a stock tune. If you modify the car you also run the risk of breaking them.
The difference between the two is that if the car is stock tune and they blow then Subaru will cover the cost. If you modify it and they blow YOU get to cover the cost. |

If you are worried, you should start by changing your oil, you are overdue. Subaru recommends 3750 mile intervals for heavy use and a turbo qualifies as heavy use.

Change your oil frequently, let it warm up, and drive it like normal (some pulls are ok).
I think many of the issues people have are with their tunes. They go get their car dynoed and tuned there, then experience issues. I've had friends with this happen to them many times. Sometimes I think people push their tunes too hard or the tuner is looking for the best numbers, not the safest tune. |

I subscribe to them 3 as well. Sucks to see it happen but you have to pay to play. Even with a pro tune is can still happen.
This vid crack me up though. |

Evan doesn't push his car hard?
He's only 18 years old and he's got full bolt ons and E85 to the tune of 365 awhp according to his YT videos. Plus, he's uploaded street racing videos to his channel, presumably of himself. So, do you really think that car is babied? Yep, looks babied to me. Look, I have no clue why some of you are so infatuated with making gigantic power and then go out and buy one of these cars. Go have mommy and daddy buy you something with RWD and a V8 if you want to make stupid amounts of power, these cars are just going to break on you because they're not designed for it. The simple fact of the matter is that you have to pay to play. And know that if you put that tune on your car, and something happens, you're going to be on the hook for that. If you can't afford to replace a motor, don't tune it. Last edited by FaastLegacy; 11-06-2013 at 11:54 AM. |

^^^ exactly! The car will run just fine! Pay to play is exactly what you are doing when you start modding. I have had my 11 wrx at stage 2 since it hit 1k miles and I am at 32k with only two issues. One was the I/c to t/b hose leak and two over boosting. Fixed the leak issue with t-clamps and a silicon hose and fixed the over boosting issue with a better tune. I use my car to transport my little ones and for a quick little run up up some canyon roads.

Do it. Stage 1 is barely a load on an STI.
