Default Building a portable tuning station - wideband O2 sensor

OK...I'm putting together a portable tuning station to help locals tune their cars.

I will be using my laptop, with DeltaDash, and the external Labjack. I want to assemble a little kit which I can easily "install" into someones car and use for tuning purposes.

Right now, the missing piece is a wideband O2 sensor. I don't need a display since I plan on taking the analog output from the sensor electronics and connecting it to the Labjack. I have done searches and found FJO, LambdaBoy, and Techedge, but most of their solutions seem to come with displays and logging capabilities which I don't need since DeltaDash is going to do that for me. I would also like an easy way to install this sensor without having to add a bung or remove stock sensors. So, some kind of tailpipe adaptor...

Any suggestions?

I have access to some ETAS sensors, but they are not something that I will have access to all the time and I really don't want to risk breaking one of those... I would probably use it to check the accuracy of the sensor I do get.

Thanks.

They now have the ability to log external sensors via a device called the LabJack which plugs into a USB port. It's the reason I am doing all of this...

You might try contacting Garfield Willis at http://www.EGORtech.com. He sells a flexible tailpipe probe (called the EGORproboscis) for $79. He also sells wideband A/F meters, sensors (NTK) and associated cables.

thanks! This looks very cool.

If you come up with something that works well in the tailpipe please share. I cant really think of a good way of doing that if the cars going to be moving.

Im pretty sure you can get motec sensors seperately for under $100, looks like thats the route they went to log with their labjack. I'll dig around and see if I can source one for ya.

edit- Jon comes thru again! $200 for o2 + $79 for tailpipe adapter isnt too bad.

edit2- This is what motec has to say:

"The MoTeC Professional Lambda Meter is capable of operating with both the NTK UEGO and the Bosch LSU-4 5 wire wide band sensors. Of the two, the NTK is the more accurate. It is a true laboratory grade sensor. Its accuracy has been found to be about 1.5% better than that of the Bosch LSU. Additionally the NTK has a better response time than does the LSU again about 1.5%. The NTK is the benchmark against which the LSU is measured. The advantage of the LSU sensor is its price compared to the NTK. If you are doing very precise and accurate laboratory type testing, the NTK is the sensor for you. Both sensors have a life expectancy of 500 hours on unleaded fuels and that number is diminished to 50 hours using leaded fuels."

Thats the one that EGOR sells....the NTK UEGO.

BTW, there is no way that you can log A/F with only a wideband sensor and a Labjack. You also need an appropriate sensor controller. Usually, that controller is part of a wideband meter.

Looks to me that the techedge has the pre-built componets avail, for about $140 US for the controller and cable.

Would an O2 sensor like these be of any use?

I looked at the LambdaBoy. I believe one unique feature they had was a 0 - 1 volt output from the controller. They use the NTK sensor. They are considerably cheaper than FJO.

I needed datalogging, so that's the reason I went with the FJO. That is if I can ever get the vendor to ship it to me!

Well...it looks like I won't have to buy one afterall. One of the guys I work with has an Horiba A/F meter is is going to loan me. Plus, I still have the ETAS units that I can borrow pretty much anytime I want...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!!
