Default 2012 Impreza Fuel Economy Issues

I am interested in hearing the real-world fuel economy issues 2012 Impreza owners are having. I have been following every review, Fuelly.com contributions, and the experiences of friends and co-workers who have purchased a 2012 Imprezas (non-WRX).

My concern is a majority of owners are seeing MPG numbers in the low 20's, when the EPA rating is 27 city / 36 highway. Numbers will be affected greatly by driving style, but based on the results across the board, I feel this is an issue that needs to be documented and addressed.

Please contribute your objective experiences, including Transmission, Trim, Mileage and percentage of City versus Highway travel.

Thank You.

EPA ratings are just that, a rating. You can not diagnose or fix low fuel economy except for a few minor adjustments like tire pressure and performing vehicle maintenance. Outside of that, the ECM controls everything and makes adjustments. Other factors that contribute are driving style, winter blended fuels, etc.

I think this thread belongs elsewhere because this is not a warranty /SOA issue.

You don't feel a company making a false claim isn't a corporate issue? Honda owners tended to disagree with the Civic Hybrid claims.

The company isn't making a false claim at all. The EPA requirements are never exact and it can vary. It even states that on the sticker. That is why they say "up to 36mpg" .The rating also has a combined estimate of 30 mpg. The manual transmission model is 25. Now using a link from a site you mentioned, this link shows the average for 2012 Impreza's non WRX http://www.fuelly.com/car/subaru/impreza/2012

Nothing in that shows that these cars are getting significant less gas mileage. 8 out of 35 vehicles are getting less than 25 mpg on average. 5 of those 8 are under 22 mpg. So please explain to me where there is a significant issue?

Also why are you even comparing a Honda Hybrid with a Subaru Impreza? Also if I recall, the Honda issue has a much larger difference in what was claimed and what the owners are getting. Then again, some Hybrid owners tend to be a little loopy anyways.

Oh Gawd, a wannabee class action suit lawyer.

Ten people could take the exact same car and come up with ten different fuel economy numbers. How and where you drive makes all the difference. If you want to blame someone for not matching the EPA mileage number, blame the EPA. They are the ones who came up with it.

Do you own a 2012 Impreza and are you experiencing poor fuel economy, or were you just looking for some sort of hobby to keep you busy?

I've personally seen low/mid 30s in an '11 Outback, which is bigger, heavier, and has higher parasitic losses through the drivetrain. I have no doubts that a smaller, lighter, more efficient car will be able to top that.

Do you know what the EPA drive cycle is like? Do you know how many people don't drive like that?

My daily commute is about 10 miles of 45 mph stretches with about 20 stoplights spread between. It's horrible for fuel economy, accelerating to 45-50 and then hitting the brakes to stop. In my Impreza I average about 18-20 mpg when the EPA estimate is 22/29.

The Outback I used to take to class was rated at 19/27 mpg. I've had customers who claim they've seen 40mpg trips (I'm a little skeptical, but it's not totally impossible).

Should people complain that Subaru made false claims about the fuel economy of the Outback, because most owners are seeing 30+ mpg on the highway and the advertised EPA estimate was only 27?

I've also got a customer whose only complaint about his 2011 Outback is poor fuel economy. When I pushed him a little, he admitted that most of his highway driving is 80-85 mph and he's only getting about 22-24 mpg.

Should he really complain, when he's cruising at 85 mph?

And don't forget, the 27/36 mpg estimates are based upon the CVT, not the manual trans.

I have about 1000 miles on my Sport Limited PZEV. I have only two fillups currently. My fuelly calcs say about 29mpg while my TripB that has not yet been reset says 31mpg. I do mostly commuting but did a few hundred miles road trip one weekend. I'm coming from a 2003 Civic and am happy with the Imprezas numbers so far.

To compare the same driving routines with a light footed driver:
2003 Civic 1.7L VTEC vs 2012 Impreza 2.0L
Commute: 29-31 v. 27-28
Highway: 33-35 v. 33

I hope she breaks in nicely and gets up to Civic range or better but if not the Subaru is still great.

I'm cross shopping cars right now. The 2012 Impreza 5-Door has been at the top of my list until I saw a huge discrepancy between posted fuel economy number and reality.

My current 2004 Impreza TS is rated at 23/27, I get about 24.5 currently, driving about 75 on the highway, with a roof rack and a ton of extra stuff in the trunk, and 2 baby seats. I have seen 34.5 on a trip to DC from CT.

My wife's 2004 forester X is rated for about the same as my 2004, but we see about 28 mixed city / highway. Best was 35.1 again on a trip to DC from CT.

I am afraid of putting down my hard earned cash on a car that is giving very optimistic numbers and NOT delivering and people accepting it, because we are a loyal breed. This is my 5th Subaru and something like the 42nd Subaru in my family.

My current car is paid off, running well, but getting along on mileage, so I would like to buy something new to get better MPG and a more creature comforts. I am afraid I am going to regret my purchase and end up with a car that makes claims it cannot deliver.

When a car gives a 27/36 range, I expect it to fall in between. The frequency of seeing 21.6, 22.8 and 23.4 on Fuelly and on the forums does not sit well with me.

On a straight 75 MPH cruise with 3 people and luggage for 1 night, my 5-speed Impreza indicated 28-29 MPG when set on cruise control. My cumulative MPG over 1300 miles is around 24 MPG.

Do I think the ratings are optimistic? Yes, because I don't think most people drive like the way the EPA does its driving tests.
Am I still happy with the MPG I am getting? Yes, it is still a big improvement over my old vehicle. It is harder to match EPA ratings with the Impreza compared to my older vehicle with my driving style, but EPA ratings are still only ratings.

What about those that have 29.7, 27.6, 30.2, 27.1, 29.4??

The Honda lawsuit was more about the corrosion of cables that lead to the failure of the Battery systems. I'm averaging almost 32mpg lifetime over 6k miles.... and I'm running a roof rack! Good luck fighting Subaru/EPA over this

I asked our used car manager today about his fuel economy - he's been averaging 30 with the exception of his last tank, which was 28.

That's on a 45-50 mph highway with stoplights every 1/2 to 2 or 3 miles.

I'm conflicted also. I crossed shopped the 2012 Impreza 5 Door CVT & the 2012 Focus 5 Door auto back to back over the weekend and having the same concerns about the Impreza mpg discrepancy. I liked them both for different reasons.
The Ford Focus mpg numbers on Fuelly seems to be coming in fairly close to the posted EPA ratings. Maybe the Impreza will pickup as more are on the road and reporting on Fuelly.
I really need to decide how important mpg vs. awd is to me. I'm hoping to see better mpg numbers in the near future from the Impreza b/c it's a very appealing package.

my wife's 2012 Impreza limited is averaging 24mpg. She drives 12 miles each way to work and home. All main streets with moderate traffic and lots of lights.

you will probably never see much better than that based on the short distance, and not completely allowing the drive train to warm up coupled with all the stop and go.....that being said.....a true hybrid is perfect for this type of commute....it probably would never get off the battery power.....

my 12 Limited HB PZEV CVT completely stock, is averaging over 30 MPG closing in on 31 MPG on a 100 mile daily commute with 6K on the odometer now....it has been inching up about a 0.5 MPG each month now with the increasing mileage...Im very happy with what Im seeing in my car.....

and remember...this is an AWD vehicle.....which is one of the features I was looking for....fuel economy was also a consideration....but not the primary......just a general statement...if MPG is the first consideration you are looking for in an economy car.....the Impreza isnt it.....look at hybrid models, or the sky active technology perhaps...or other NON-AWD models.......

Otherwise I beleive its way to early to condemn this car solely on MPG.....its been on the market about 3 months now...and not many owners have even passed a reasonable breakin period for the car....which I would suggest is somewhere between 3-5k miles......and after the first oil change.....lets wait and see what the MPGs look like this spring and summer......I think we all will be surprised......

Regardless of the car being AWD, it should still not be so difficult to hit the EPA numbers. The car is already getting the AWD penalty for only being 34/36 MPG when most other cars in the class are 40+ right now. My driving is probably 95%+ highway, I have 5K miles on the car (so the break in period is out the window), and I still can't hit 30 MPG with my normal routine which involve two ~25 minute drives on highways and 45 MPH back roads every day. I see a problem with that. I don't speed, I don't have any massive hill climbs to deal with, I don't accelerate hard, and I am very good at using very little brakes to slow the car. There is one stop light on my path to work, and it is almost always green.

My previous car was rated 30 MPG highway and I was getting better real world MPG than my Impreza is getting right now. That is with the same drives, same speeds, and the same months (I have been using Fuelly for a few years so everything is tracked).

My current MPG is only ~2 MPG better than a 2004 Outback I also drive. That car has an old engine design (and much larger engine), is shaped like a brick, and has the 4EAT transmission, and weighs much more than the Impreza. This is the 4th Subaru in my family, and currently it is the only one that can't get anywhere near the MPG estimate.

Also lets keep in mind that "36 MPG highway" is supposed to be the AVERAGE highway MPG, not the absolute max the car can achieve. People in warmer areas with good driving habits and lots of highway travel should be beating 36 MPG, and literally no one is so far.

If I knew my Impreza would get real world MPG numbers where they are right now, I would have bought a Legacy instead. I think the EPA window sticker is pretty far away from reality.

I have a 2008 Impreza, and I was at the dealer on the weekend and the economy gauge on the 2012 Impreza that I drove, said the same economy as what I get now. I am scared. I am cross shopping as well. I am looking at Mazda 3 Skyactiv and also the new Mazda CX5. On my new car, I want significant differences from what I have now.

ive got 3700 mi on my 5dr premium cvt. i average between 26 and 30 a tank and that is with a remote start warming it up for 10 min before i drive it. on the highway doing 55-65 i can get the 36 with cruise control but i do most of my driving around 75 and i still average 30mpg overall im happy with that. but i think when the weather gets warmer it will do better. so the lowest ive seen on an over all tank is 26mpg.

Regardless of my concerns I still ordered a 2012 Sport Limited on Monday.
I also drove a Skyactiv 3 and a new AWD CX-5 touring.
The CX-5 was fantastic, but because it was so new and has such limited availability, the models were fully loaded demo cars, and they wanted MSRP+, so that was out.
The 3 was really nice, priced super well, but my job requires me to be there, even in 2 feet of snow, so with an open differential, even with snows, I didn't believe it would get me there.
So I take delivery in several weeks (no 5 doors ANYWHERE by me)

If you really need the travel in deep snow, the Impreza isn't a terrible good car for it due to a lack of ground clearance.
