open ecu is just how you get the flash onto your ECU. the method your tuner uses is up to him/her. (anyone know of a female tuner or can i just say 'him'?) and a protune is just a tune using Cobb's AP protuner software.

If you are after a cheap tune - perhaps look for a tuner who can tune your car for you using Enginuity.

I think there are a few places around who can and some also offer internet tuning pretty cheap (a few hundred dollars) - where you send them your logs and ROM and copy of your rom and they send you back a tune that you then flash using euflash. Yoy then do another log and send it to them and they check it and send a new tune if needed.

There are a few places around, but the only one I know of is the Dom Tune (HERE).

If anyone knows of others, please post.

'open ecu' is sort of an umbrella term that covers a few different 'open' tools for messing with your ECU.

EcuFlash is one of those tools, and it's the one that actually copies the ROM images back and forth between your car and laptop. Recent versions also let you modify the tables.

Enginuity is another open source tool for modifying tables.

These tools are roughly equivalent to Cobb's, in that they will allow your tuner to give your car the maps it needs for whatever mods you have. Cobb's will allow tuning in real time though, whereas EcuFlash requires you to stop the car to upload any changes. Cobb also supports launch control and flat-foot-shifting, and Cobb provides maps that work reasonably well with common mods.

So basically, you buy a tactrix cable, get an "open" tuning tool, make some logs, email to someone, they make you a map, you download it...make another log, send it back, then they say "You're good to go" or "stop driving I need to make an adjustment"?

Is that right? I want to know for myself....It's hard to find affordable tuning for JDM ecu's....

The exact process might differ slightly, but the general steps are the same.

The following steps presume you already have a tactrix cable and will perform your logging on a dyno (for safety/legal reasons).

It also presumes you are logging air/fuel ration with a correctly installed wideband 02 sensor (LC-1, etc). If you don't have a wideband 02 sensor installed, you can monitor and log using the wideband 02 readings from whatever dyno you will be logging on.

You can switch the dyno logging process for street/road logging if you choose, but if you do, make sure you have a wideband 02 fitted, and be mndful of the speeds you will be driving at to log correctly.

Anyhoo, the steps are like so:
  1. Download and install RomRaider (Enginuity), Ecuflash and the latest definitions for both programs. Both are open source tuning programs and free to download and use.
  2. Connect the Tactrix cable between your OBD-II port and laptop/computer
  3. Using ecuflash save a copy of your current ecu ROM image (following the directions for doing this) - you will need to connect a few plugs under the dash to be able to do this, and once you have saved the ecu ROM image, disconnect the plugs.
  4. For added measure, save a copy of your ROM image to CD as well as to another directory on your laptop/computer (the more backups of this the better).
  5. Disconnect the tactrix cable
  6. Drive to your dyno of choice
  7. Connect the tactrix cable between your OBD-II port and laptop/computer
  8. Now using RomRaider (enginuity) record several logs - the tuner should tell you exactly what they want recorded. Don't forget to monitor all the important things so you don't do any damage.
  9. With the logging done, disconnect the tactrix cable and go home
  10. Email the logs and a copy of your ecu ROM image to the tuner of your choice. If you used the dyno's wideband 02, make sure you attach a copy of the dyno logs as well.
  11. The tuner will now look at the logs and make changes to your ecu ROM image (most likely using RomRaider). Once the tuner has made the required changes, the tuner will email you a modified ecu ROM image.
  12. Connect the tactrix cable between your OBD-II port and laptop/computer
  13. Using ecuflash, and following the instructions, flash the modified ecu ROM image to your ecu.
  14. Disconnect the tactrix cable
  15. Drive to your dyno of choice
  16. Perform and record the same logging as before
  17. disconnect the tactrix cable and go home
  18. Email the new logs to the tuner
  19. If any further changes need to be made, the tuner will do them and send back the modified ecu ROM image, if not, the tuner will let you know all is good.
That is pretty much it

Thanks man...that's an awesome write-up...Are these "wires" under the dash hard to get to?
