open ecu is just how you get the flash onto your ECU. the method your tuner uses is up to him/her. (anyone know of a female tuner or can i just say 'him'?) and a protune is just a tune using Cobb's AP protuner software.

I think there are a few places around who can and some also offer internet tuning pretty cheap (a few hundred dollars) - where you send them your logs and ROM and copy of your rom and they send you back a tune that you then flash using euflash. Yoy then do another log and send it to them and they check it and send a new tune if needed. There are a few places around, but the only one I know of is the Dom Tune (HERE). If anyone knows of others, please post. Last edited by wrxsti.l; 01-28-2008 at 05:06 AM. |

'open ecu' is sort of an umbrella term that covers a few different 'open' tools for messing with your ECU.
EcuFlash is one of those tools, and it's the one that actually copies the ROM images back and forth between your car and laptop. Recent versions also let you modify the tables. Enginuity is another open source tool for modifying tables. These tools are roughly equivalent to Cobb's, in that they will allow your tuner to give your car the maps it needs for whatever mods you have. Cobb's will allow tuning in real time though, whereas EcuFlash requires you to stop the car to upload any changes. Cobb also supports launch control and flat-foot-shifting, and Cobb provides maps that work reasonably well with common mods. |

So basically, you buy a tactrix cable, get an "open" tuning tool, make some logs, email to someone, they make you a map, you download it...make another log, send it back, then they say "You're good to go" or "stop driving I need to make an adjustment"?
Is that right? I want to know for myself....It's hard to find affordable tuning for JDM ecu's.... |

The following steps presume you already have a tactrix cable and will perform your logging on a dyno (for safety/legal reasons). It also presumes you are logging air/fuel ration with a correctly installed wideband 02 sensor (LC-1, etc). If you don't have a wideband 02 sensor installed, you can monitor and log using the wideband 02 readings from whatever dyno you will be logging on. You can switch the dyno logging process for street/road logging if you choose, but if you do, make sure you have a wideband 02 fitted, and be mndful of the speeds you will be driving at to log correctly. Anyhoo, the steps are like so:
