Thumbs down Subaru Impreza top list of stolen vehicles

Take a look at the article on Canada's newswire:

Could this mean another insurance hike for WRX owners?

Wow, and I thought Hondas owned that list. Is the upgraded factory security system considered an immobilizer?

I don't believe their numbers.... there was less than 2000 WRX sold Canada in 2001-2002 as 2002 models.... In 2002, Subaru sold 6134 Impreza (TS, RS, OBS and WRX)...

http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/030108-2.htm

How can a car with few sales be so high on the theft rate? It doesn't make sense.... It's not like were hearing about a friends car being stolen every other week.

I could understand if Subaru sold 50-60 000 Imprezas per year

Read the article again: "The Subaru Impreza WRX 4DR 4WD holds the dubious distinction of topping
the list of ten vehicles with the highest theft claim cost per vehicle. "

This means not that our cars are the most often stolen, but that they are the most expensive for the insurance industry to replace when stolen. The article suggests this is because they are rarely recovered (hence the insurance company is forced to buy the victim a new WRX, rather than spend a few grand on repairing the steering column of a recovered vehicle).

Scott.

Read more carefully:

"The Subaru Impreza WRX 4DR 4WD holds the dubious distinction of topping the list of ten vehicles with the highest theft claim cost per vehicle."

It says that of the vehicles stolen, the actual claim cost per vehicle stolen is highest with the WRX. It does not say it is the most stolen car. That belongs to the Hyundai Tiburon.

The Subaru Impreza is number 4 on the list of most frequently stolen vehicles.

As someone had mentioned, its unlikely the absolute number of WRX's stolen is greater than Honda Civics, etc. but in terms of number of cars stolen / number of that car on the road, I can see the WRX being up there. Expressed as a ratio, the WRX is stolen more frequently than the Honda Civic. Theroteical example, 3 / 100 WRX's on the road get stolen while 2 / 100 Civics on the road get stolen.

That should clear up some confusion.

As for insurance costs going up, most likely. When have the went down in the last couple years?

I pulled this from the article:

"This sporty and high performance vehicle has proven to be very attractive with thieves partly because it lacks an IBC approved factory installed immobilizer.

Yes, Alberta provincial government has legislated a freeze on insurance rates for up to 18 months. My one comment is that while on the surface this appears good, people should realize that insuranec companies can justify rates not going down as they are "frozen". So, a new driver with $5,000 insurance may still have to pay $5,000 when before the freeze, it might of went down some. I have no idea if this will be the case, but just some food for thought.

With the upgraded alarm system you do get the immobilizer. Don't know if its IBC approved or not.

I wonder if I can get a discount even if it isn't IBC approved.

The discount isn't worth it in most cases. It saves me something like $9/year.
