Default Any blouch dom. 3xtr owners?

I'm looking into getting a blouch 3xtr for my 04 sti and I'm having a hard time deciding if its what I want.

Is there anyone willing to let me ride a long and see how their car performs with this turbo? I'd be willing to drive there and give gas money.
I'm in the Worcester Ma area. 15 minutes outside to be exact.

Or if anyone has a turbo they feel out performs it in spool and still has good top end let me know. Thanks.

Contact whoever is going to be tuning your car and ask their opinion. Make sure you know what your power goals are and they can recommend a turbo based on your wants/needs.

I'm looking for whp and I want a setup that's good for auto cross, track etc. but still able to dd.
I've been doing research for months and still haven't found any solid path. I did talk with someone at EFI logics but basically what to do to the engine.

DOM3 is not a good choice for auto-x if you ask me. Too laggy. I'd look towards a 20G. I'd also talk with whos tuning your car, as their opinion really matters more than any of ours.

Autox?? Keep your stock turbo and buy a nice set of tires. Look into meth and external wastegate if you are looking for a power boost.

IIRC they don't allow external dump EWG for AutoX. Exhaust must exit behind passenger compartment.

Did not know that. I'm going to withdraw my last recommendation anyway. Leave the car as is and learn how to drive first. A stock Sti is already too much car for an amateur anyway.

+1. Also stay away from meth - some event sites won't allow it. Stay stock as long as you can and learn to drive the car first. If you *must* mod the car, I'd do the following:

Keep the stock turbo, add a downpipe, catback, injectors, EL header and a GOOD tune and you'll be over 300whp easy. The car will have incredibly fast spool and will be great for autocross.

Keep in mind the above modifications will bump you into ASP, and you'll be up against cars with wide sticky r-comps. Drop the injectors, and you'll be back down to STU which is a street tire class that's probably better for learning. However, you will be limited to 245 tires and the downpipe must be catted.

Yeah, if youre running AutoX and want to be competitive, read the rulebook and see what mods youre allowed.

I have a brand new in box Blouch 20G XTR which I would sell you. Pretty good choice for a stock location quick spooling turbo. PM me if you're interested.

Nate, I have a few customers in the Worcester area with Dom 2.5s. I wouldn't recommend it for auto-x. They come on in the low to mid 4000s and are stretch their legs in the upper gears. The DOM1.5XTR is pretty explosive in low rpms though. A good performer for a street car. Here is a 3rd gear dyno pass in an 2010 STI SE.

If your primary goal is to dd and do a few autocrosses I would steer you away from a bigger turbo. You can go much faster in an autox with a sticky r compound setup than just adding boost. There is also a bunch less to worry about.

Thanks these are all good responses that are helping me. I'd still like to ride in a few different cars though

Bren - I never understood the placement of the 1.5xtr in the lineup. Do you really see it being any better than a 20gxtr? To me it seems that the 20G would be a better choice if you want that lower end punch, and those looking for power should progress straight to a 2.5xtr or 3xtr, depending on how much power.

It is one of the better street turbos for stock or lightly built motors. Peak torque at 3700, and mid 400s on race gas/e85, 400whp on pump. It is not too small for the 2.5L. In 10CM form it rocks - look up TopSpeed Atlantas testing on it. It romps all over the 20GXT in spool and top end. They did some testing which is the same that we've seen.

Personally, I dont understand the point of the 2.5XTR to be honest. Too close to the 3. On pump all 3 of them are within 40whp.

Id personally like to see some testing outside of TopSpeeds....its always referred to but it seems a little optimistic.

I agree that the 1.5 is better than a 20gxt in pretty much every way, ive set up cars that were near identical with a 20g and with a dom1.5 and seen much better results with the 1.5

Ive only setup one car with the 2.5 so my data there is limited.

Dom3s and 20gs are like bread and butter around here, but the in between turbos there is a lot less data on.

20GXT needs to be PUSHED to make 400whp, over 25 psi.

1.5XTR no so much, able to make over 400whp with less drama and 3 or 4 psi less

Hmm, some interesting information indeed. Seems from Matt's graphs the 1.5 does hold up top better than the 20G.

Just to add some insight to add to all of your data, and topspeed's data/take on the 1.5xtr, here's Ron's take on he matter of 1.5xtr vs. 2.5 xtr . He seems to think the 2.5xtr is the better choice between them. He gives some good data and plots here:

I'm not saying one person's observations and opinions are better than another, merely just adding some good data to the conversation. I'd love to see a good 2.5xtr vs. 3xtr comparison.

E85 puts alot of bigger turbos in their sweet spot. For the street and lower pump gas boost - the turbos are alot closer with the only major difference being spool.

I can agree with this, E85 or Meth, and a new MAP, do allow you to bring the turbos into a whole new ballpark, (as shown in Ron's airboy plots), and all these turbos will be much closer power on 93 pump and low boost. I'm still curious on the DOM3 or HTA green, how they sit next to these.

For bolt on turbos: If I'm not putting a Dom1.5 on a car, we recommend the HTA Green ... 430-450 on pump with nearly 400rpm better transient spool on the same car vs DOM2.5/3 cars.
