Your test #4 should be with your TMIC and a turbo that pushes the limit of all of the aftermarket TMICs. A FP green or similar.

Agreed. Any TMIC that provides a pressure drop will give benefit over a stock WRX TMIC. Where people like myself really start shopping for one TMIC over another is how well they handle larger turbos.

For example, I currently have a Turbo XS TMIC. That said, I would definitely consider upgrading if there was tests showing any benefit in the form of cooling, efficiency and pressure drop. Even if it's minimally better on all aspects, I would still get one.

Wow....excellent thread! Is there a splitter/shroud that works well on the 06 with STi TMIC?

How does spraying water on the top of the intercooler during driving affect it's cooling and efficiency?

Worthwhile or not?

Keaniegenie,

I may be interpreting some of your posts wrong but you seem to be implying that a higher pressure drop is better for performance when, in fact, just the opposite is true. Pressure drop is related to the restriction to flow. For a given flow rate (CFM) a more restrictive system will have a higher pressure drop and vice versa.

Think of it this way: if your boost gauge (tapped into the Intake Manifold) is reading 20 psi and your Intercooler/Charge Pipes have a pressure drop of 2 psi (at a given flow rate) then your turbo is actually operating at 22 psi. You want to keep that pressure drop as low as possible to get as much boost as you can into the engine.

I just wanted to clear that up (I hope I didn't confuse the issue even more).

You're correct. I meant reduced pressure drop. Thank you for clarifying.

You want the STI splitter: 90817FE310
And the rubber seal: 90817FE340

lower pressure drop may not always be better...

If the internal fin density is lower then you will get a lower pressure drop
however the IC efficiency can then suffer

in a correctly designed turbo system you allow for pressure drop across the intercooler (and you should have some)

If you have too little pressure drop ie. a very large intercooler
then you get the airflow going straight down the middle of the IC
this also creates lower IC efficiency
Air particles do not like to do right angle turns, pressure differential helps this to happen making for more even air flow through the IC

Like everything it comes down to good design
correctly sized IC for the design power levels and application
also good IC design/efficiency goes without question

stock subaru IC's are a very good design for stock power levels
tube/fin IC's are also very light for their size and efficiency (weight is also a consideration)
at elevated power levels they will of course produce increased pressure drops which are tehn limiting maximum achievable power levels
one reason to upgrade to larger IC

When will this Process West TMIC be available in the US.? I will be in the market for a new TMIC in the next few weeks and I am loving yours. Should I wait or is it going to be a while? How long?

Thank you.

Process West - Dou need a STi scoop to fit that splitter? Or will the standard WRX scoop be OK? Or will you be making different versions with different heights for WRX and STi and the different model years?

The welds on the IC look great and the data you have so far is also good.

Process West, your TMIC looks great very high quality unit too say the least! Where are you located in Australia? Opps I see you are in Sydney (beautiful place btw). Would you be willing to simply ship to a Brisbane address if I were to pick one of these up? My friend lives there and I am going to visit him again in July .
I also noticed you have changed the y-pipe slighty which is a good thing, any reason why you did not go another step with that? I mean eliminating the y-pipe all together using a single entry core hotside tank?

Thanks for the info,

Mike Candler

The splitter is designed for the WRX scoop. If you have an STi then the splitter is not needed because the STi splitter works perfectly with my intercooler. There are 3 different splitters available. 01/02 WRX (bugeye) 03+ WRX and I also have a splitter for Forester XT.

I can send one to your friends place in Brisbane no problem.
The idea of the Y-pipe is to give an even distribution of charge air along the rear end tank.

Make one for a Saab 92x, and you won't have to redesign a splitter when the new WRX's come out.

New WRX hood scoop= Saab 92x hood scoop.

Does anybody have a weight spec for the PW TMIC? Also wondering if it includes any hoses or clamps?
