OK, so I just had the lower control arms on my '02 WRX Wagon (275K miles) checked out to see if the bushings needed to be replaced, and the guy said he tested them thoroughly and they are tight. No movement that concerns him. Could that be possible? I am pretty sure they are original. Would they feel "tight"/no excessive play to a non-Subaru expert? I'm in Spokane, WA where there are tons of Subarus, so while they may not be Subaru "experts", I'm sure they have a lot come through the shop.

Mine cracked at about the same mileage. Replaced with OEM rad and it cracked again after 30k. I then replaced with all-aluminum Koyo rad and never had any problems again and it’s at 230k now.

Im sitting at 90k On my 2013 wrx. Only mod is a 2015 sti steering rack swap which I did because my original rack was leaking. Amazing change for anyone who has the option. Had to replace the clutch at 80k as well. Maybe I’m a trash driver but I could have done without that expense.

Anyways I’ve been pretty good on the maintenance. I wasn’t aware of just how critical it was with this engine to change oil 3k-4K miles. Owners manual says 5k-7.5k. I won’t say I didn’t go over 5k once or twice, but generally I’ve changed around 4K-5k and have tried my best to take care of it.

Trying to decide now, new car or keep it going? If I keep it, how scared should I be about the ring land issues? Obviously a wide group of opinions there.

Here’s my plan For next service if I do keep it

Timing belt
Water cooler
Radiator and hoses
Replace bushings?
Replace turbo hose?

Are those items necessary for DD?

I guess just looking for feedback from folks like myself. Never interested in power mods cause this thing already hauls. I like driving and always keep pilot SS shoes on. I want a car I can keep for 180k miles, but I’m scared of the EJ blowing up on me. Looking for opinions before I commit to the next 90k miles and invest in 3k of maintenance listed above. 10k for the car and 3k in maintenance combined gets me a long way to a new car right now. Old Subaru owner looking to get back into one and looking for advice. Other than the obvious stated here, what would be someone's concerns buying an 07 with low mileage (80k) thats been sitting for the past 2 years other than moderate up and down the street driving. Also of note, single owner car driven by a much older gentlemen (ie - not beat on by a kid)

Clutch/brakes/rotors has been done at 65k and all recommended Subaru maintenance since new. Steady oil changes. Timing would be one of the first things I do, but what else should give me hesitation or I should be on the look out for?

Check the roof of the trunk around the bottom corners of the rear windshield (not the trunk lid) and the rear wheel-well seam sealer/drain plugs behind the trunk trim panels. These are rust prone areas.

How much would it typically cost for a shop to replace cam seals, timing belt, water pump and reseal the oil pump. I have a 98 Impreza with the 2.2L non-turbo engine and it has an oil leak in the right side of the timing cover. It also overheats when on the highway or when idling for long periods of time with the AC on.

Really depends on where you live. Hourly rates can vary from $60-$175p/hour depending on where you live. Start shopping around in your area with reputable shops and you'll get an idea of what it will cost you.

A better question to ask is; Can someone recommend a good shop in my area for xxxxxx? Follow this with where you are located and how far you are willing to drive for said work.

One big failure point on Impreza (12+), Crosstrek and Forester is the front control arm rear bushing. It's a stupid design in my opinion and starts to break before 100k miles. It's like an X holding on and when one leg breaks, the others now have more stress and eventually they all break. That one bushing requires a $700 tool to remove and install. So to DIY that makes way more sense to simply replace the entire control arm which costs $100 to $200, on average. This gets you the other bushing that's less problematic and a ball joint that has normal life.
