Swapping 1990 EJ22 to 91-94 Legacy
Alright somebody help me. A few days ago I smacked up my 1990 Legacy LS, flew into a phone pole. So now i'm here, the N/A EJ22 is perfectly fine, but I ended up bending the frame of the car.
What I want to do now is swap the 2.2 engine I have into a a '91 or perhaps a '92,'93,'94... and I need some help with the compatibility. Would my '90 EJ22 fit into a '91 EJ20 Legacy RS transmission? Or a '93 or '94 Legacy? I've heard from a few places that a lot of Subaru's EJ series is compatible. If I swapped it into a turbo'd Sub then I'd worry about building the pistons and whatnot later. I just need some info. Somebody tell me what I can do with this. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Where are you getting a 91 EJ20 Legacy RS transmission from?
The 91-94NA longblocks are identical. |

Nah... I meant I need to buy a completely different car, to swap this EJ22 into. The RS would've been preferable, but it doesn't look like i'd easily get one. I was just wondering what my swapping options were altogether? What I could do with this...

Anything with a dual port exhaust 2.2 will work with no modifications. Why would you want to put a 2.2 liter engine into an Impreza RS that original had a 2.5? It is possible to replace a 2.5 with your 2.2 with the right year of car and intake manifold if you really want to.
I can't see why your 90 EJ22 is so great that you want to keep it. Your best bet is to sell your complete car to a VW Vanagon guy. They pay good money for them in running condition. Then use that money to buy something else. |

I see where you're coming from.
I want to keep the engine though. When I bought the car I thought it was overheating due to the cooling system, looking deeper into though it had a blown head gasket. Being that the engine had 238K miles on it I figured it'd just be better to buy a direct EJ22 replacement, shipped from Japan.. then to rebuild the old thing. So that leaves me here, an almost new engine in a bashed up '90 Legacy. I'm just wondering if I can capitolize on the sistuation by buying a first-gen Legacy of sorts with a blown motor, and a good transmission. |

You should ask on the Legacy specific forum. http://bbs.legacycentral.org *The only 2.2 japan got was a very special turbo model called the 22b which is very rare. |
